1 Saratoga District 2015 Spring Camporee Troop Information for QUEST FOR THE COLORS Camp Boyhaven May 15-17, 2015 Locate, Recover, Capture, Create, and Defend your team s Colors (Flags) in a weekend of Extreme Capture the Flag and more Featuring guard towers, escapee monkey bridges, other scout-built contraptions, orienteering, triangulation, team searches, first aid simulation, banner decorating, and many other patrol activities. 2 Check-in Procedure Time: starts at 5:00pm on Friday, May 15, 2015 Location: Boyhaven Registration barn (located SE of the main athletic fields) Required paperwork: Troop Registration and Roster Form Medical Forms, for each adult and each youth attendee, fully completed using current BSA forms Fee (cash or check made out to Twin Rivers Council, if not already prepaid) Pre-registered or prepaid units must show a copy of their receipt Orientation Meeting 8:30pm 9:30pm on Friday, at the Registration Barn, for all Patrol leaders, Scout Masters, and Camporee Adult Volunteers Check-out Check-out begins at 8:00am on Sunday, May 17 Units must check out by11:00am and be out of camp by noon on Sunday STEP 1: Prepare your campsite for check-out as follows: Ensure the campsite is litter free Restore the campsite to better condition than you found it Pack all gear and be ready to depart Carry out all garbage to be disposed of at home STEP 2: Request a campsite inspection from Camporee Staff at the Registration Barn STEP 3: Receive patches, bandanas, and ribbons after site inspection is completed and approved Parking Parking is available in lots along Boyhaven Road such as across from the old White house, or south of the swim pond, or on the lower level by Banker II. Limited parking may also be available near your unit s campsite. Do not park so as to restrict other vehicles, including emergency vehicles, from entering or leaving. Page 2 of 6

3 Camporee General Rules The Scout Law is the law of the camp! Buddy System must be followed by all scouts at all times. Leave No Trace. No Scout may leave the Camporee early unless approved by the Troop s Scoutmaster. Scouts leaving the Camporee early are to checkout at the registration barn. As at any Scout activity, there will be no illegal drugs, alcohol, fireworks, or firearms and other weapons. No electronic devices including radios, ipods, MP3 players, walkie-talkies (except devices designated for Camporee staff use only), or other devices are allowed outside of Troop campsite areas. Any wheeled devices (wheelbarrows, carts, etc.) used for hauling gear to and from campsites, will only be permitted for use during check-in & check-out, must be checked out, and must be returned to the parking lot immediately after use. Water is available at the spigot near the registration barn. Bring your own water containers. Latrines are to be used as latrines. Alternative latrines (e.g. trees, fire pits) are not allowed. No trash dumping in the latrines at any time. All trash must be either carried home with your unit for disposal, or disposed in the Boyhaven dumpster. Report all accidents, injuries, or other emergencies to a member of the Camporee staff. An EMT will be on site at all times during the Camporee Lost and found items are to be turned in at the registration barn. Guests, including parents and friends, may be invited to visit Camporee on Saturday May 19 to watch the day s activities and/or watch the OA Call-out in the evening. Official uniforms (formerly known as Class A ) are to be worn by all Scouts and Scouters for OA Call-out on Saturday evening. Activity uniforms (formerly known as Class B Tee-shirts), or other similar Patrol or Troop activity attire, is encouraged for all other activities. Wood tools must be properly stored and used (please see the Scout Handbook for proper Patrol campsite set up). Sheath knives and fixed-blade scabbard knives are prohibited. Campfires, if used, must be in existing fire rings or fire places, must be attended at all times, and must be completely extinguished (i.e., COLD to the touch) when the campsite is unattended. Only dead and down wood may be collected for campfires. (Wood from Boyhaven property woodsheds is not to be used for campfires.) Smoking is not allowed at Camp Boyhaven. Page 3 of 6

5 Camporee Theme and Description This year s camporee Quest for the Colors involves scout skills and activities to locate, recover, capture, create, and defend your team s colors (flag bandanas) in a weekend of extreme Capture the Flag and more. The entire district will be divided into four equal-sized teams for Saturday daytime activities. Each team will be identified by color, and each team will have its own sector of the field. Each team will have almost 100 flag bandanas to quest for. At the end of the event, each paid participate will receive a flag bandana as a souvenir. Team Organization Troops will be split, by patrol, amongst the various teams. Each team will consist of patrols from different troops. Patrols will be assigned to teams on Friday evening. Each scout will receive, and is to wear during the day on Saturday, a shoulder sash ribbon of the color corresponding to their team. Patrol leaders, numbering approximately 8-12 per team, will serve as the command staff for their team. The command staff for each team will meet on Friday evening with Camporee Staff to review the Saturday activities. Each team will create, decorate, and defend their own banner as one of the Saturday activities. Ultimate Capture the Flag Multiple rounds of capture the flag (CTF) will take place on Saturday, and all 4 teams will compete simultaneously. Field of competition will be the main athletic field. Field will be divided into four sectors. Each team will start with several flags in their sector. They must defend these flags while trying to capture flags from enemy sectors. Their team s banner, and all other previously obtained flags, could also become flags that are in play. A single prison will be located in the center of the field where prisoners from all four teams must go if they are tagged out while in an enemy sector. A moat will surround the prison. No one can escape the prison unless their team builds a bridge across the moat. A guard tower with may be built by each team to hang their banner and all previously-obtained flags, and to guard those flags from being recaptured. Other Flag Quests Patrols will quest for flag bandanas between rounds of CTF. These quests will take place within their team sector and in other parts of the camp. Many of these activities will involve obtaining flags from within minefields using scout skills, patrol skills, scout-built contraptions or other methods. Other activities will involve finding and recovering flags that are hidden throughout the camp property. Objective and How to Prepare The main objective is for the scouts to have a fun-filled weekend where they inherently will want to use scout skills and lateral thinking for creative problem solving. Scouts will probably have more fun if they come prepared knowing: knots and lashings, map reading, compass skills, and orienteering. Page 5 of 6
