1 Susquehanna Council Susquehanna Council 2015 Whitewater Camporee Friday-Sunday, August 28-30th, 2015 Whitewater Challenger PO Box 8 Whitehaven, PA Boy Scouts of America All Boy Scout Troops and Venturing Crews in the Susquehanna Council are invited to participate in the Council White Water Rafting Camporee. The highlight of the camporee will be the whitewater rafting event down the Lehigh Gorge. You will be led by experienced guides through rapids with such names as Triple Drop, Z, Staircase, White Falls, and Pinball which will leave you drenched and begging for more. You will be shuttled to and from the drop off points. All safety equipment is provided. We are also lucky to have this event during one of the annual dam releases which maximizes the amount of water and fun. Camping fees, whitewater fees, and the patch is included in the fee but other attractions include Mountain Biking, a Zip Line, Paintball target shooting and Meal Packages (like bagged lunches for the Rafting) are available at your own cost and planning. There is also a fully stocked snack bar and feel free to check out the opportunities offered by the Lehigh Gorge Historical Trail. In addition, Whitewater Challenger will be providing a Nature or History presentation and an area for a Council Campfire. Come prepared with your best songs, skits, and cheers to showcase your patrols talent in front of the whole council. Medical forms are required. In order to go whitewater rafting, Scouting policy is that youth must be Boy or Venture Scouts and have passed a BSA swim test. Scouts not meeting this criteria are invited to participate in alternate activities available at the venue. Leaders must make sure that all scouts are dressed appropriately and prepared for the weather conditions. See details in the overview and in the information provided from Whitewater Challenger. 3 2015 Susquehanna Council Whitewater Camporee: and Overview of available activities from Whitewater Challenger Set-up Friday night, evening registration begins at 7PM. This activity was scheduled to coincide with a dam water release to guarantee plenty of water and a top notch experience. Remember even though it is August weather may not be warm and sunny and the water will be cold. If you are interested in any of the additional activities or wish to take advantage of the bagged lunch or other meals please feel free to contact Nancy Pilecki at Directions from Interstate 80 exit 273 Go west on route 940 for ½ mile. Turn left (south) onto Lehigh Gorge Drive toward Weatherly for 4.8 miles. Turn right onto Buck Mountain Road. Go 1 mile to first intersection. Turn right again onto N. Stagecoach road. Go 300 yards to the entrance to Whitewater Challengers on the right. Mountain Biking is a popular sport in and around the Lehigh Gorge State Park. A magnificent 30 mile trail follows the river as it twists and turns through its scenic gorge. This is a converted rail-trail ride that boasts a nearly continuous 2% downhill grade. Bring your own bikes, or rent them. Shuttles to and from are also available ZipLine Adventure will put a real zip into your weekend get-away. For a lot of visitors this is the perfect ending to a perfect weekend. Join Whitewater Challenge on their 330 foot zip for a treetop view of the Outdoor Adventure Center. No experience needed. Meal Packages are available every day at the Adventure Center. Choose a breakfast buffet, a river lunch to take with you in the raft, or a dinner buffet for when you come back to the Adventure Center. Or save money by reserving a 3-meal deal. It s scrumptious food at bargain prices! Or if you prefer, prepare your own meals at your campsite. Games and Competitions: Feel free to utilize the recreation field, basketball court, beach volleyball, disc golf and paintball target shooting. Check out the Lehigh Gorge Historic Trail as an additional free activity. There is a medal and 6 part patch available. Suggested Personal Equipment All participants must be dressed appropriately for the weather conditions. Uniforms are necessary for this event. Please consider the following suggestions: Rafting gear: water shoes or sneakers, tshirt, swimsuit, sunscreen(ziplock bags/ keep stuff dry} Rain gear Pants and sweatshirt. 5 IMPORTANT INFORMATION FROM WHITEWATER CHALLENGER PLEASE FORWARD THIS RAFTING INFO TO EVERYONE IN YOUR GROUP! MORE TRIP DETAILS: Please visit click on "Lehigh River" and then click on the Activity you've reserved: either Rafting, Biking, ZipLining, Paintball, etc. If you're rafting, also click on the "FAQ's" link -- Frequently Asked Questions. HOW LONG IS YOUR RAFTING TRIP?: It's hard to be precise, because trip lengths vary from day to day, based on temperatures, wind speed, weather conditions, river flow, and the group itself. We ususally say 3-4 hours on the river, and 5-6 hours overall, but please let everyone know that any trip can last longer or shorter than the stated range of "normal" times. HOW ROUGH IS THE WATER?: This also varies from day to day, depending on recent rainfall, discharges from the dam, the effect of downstream tributaries, and so on. On any given day, the largest rapids might be Class II, Class III, or in rare instances, Class IV. SAFETY: Nothing is more important to us than your safety. We urge you to watch the Whitewater Rafting Safety Video on our web site, expecially if there are any youngsters in your party. Encourage THEM to watch, and to take our online Whitewater Safety Quiz, too. TIMELY ARRIVAL: Our trip times are strictly regulated by the state, so we usually can't wait for late arrivals. Be sure everyone arrives no later than your stated "Arrival Time." OUR ACTUAL TIME IS 10:45AM. BE THERE BY 10:00. NO REFUNDS!! DRIVING DIRECTIONS: We caution against relying on GPS or Internet mapping services because they sometimes provide faulty information. Precise and accurate driving directions are available on our web site. Go to click on "Lehigh River," then click on "Driving Directions." From Interstate 80, Exit 273, you'll want to go west on Rt 940 for 1/2 mile; then turn left onto Lehigh Gorge Drive; go 4.8 miles; then turn right onto Buck Mountain Road; go 1 mile; then turn right onto North StageCoach Road; go 300 yards to our entrance on the right. PROPER FOOTWEAR: Flip-flops, loose-fitting sandals, "crocs" and bare feet are not permitted on the river. Old sneakers are the best. Sturdy sandals (like TEVA's) are acceptable. Appropriate footwear can be purchased or rented at our Rafting Center. WHAT NOT TO TAKE IN YOUR RAFT: Leave dry clothes and towels in your car for after the trip. Don't take in your raft any valuables, keys, coolers, alcohol, glass containers, pets, or cameras that aren't waterproof. Car keys may be left at the Rafting Center. WHAT TO WEAR & BRING: You WILL get wet. On warmer days, a swim suit or T-shirt and shorts are fine. Sunscreen and a visor or brimmed hat are always a good idea. In cooler weather a windbreaker is useful. Avoid cotton, especially sweat shirts and sweat pants, which will actually make you colder. Paddling jackets and wet suits can be rented at the Rafting Center. One driver's license is required for up to six rentals. If wearing glasses, be sure to secure them with reliable glass-straps. RAFT GROUPINGS: Organize your group into rafting teams (usually 6 or 7 per raft) before you get to the river. Make sure there's at least one adult in each raft. RIVER LUNCHES: At the Lehigh, you're welcome to bring a light lunch (no alcohol, glass bottles or coolers) or you can order box lunches in advance, at a discount, from us. Advance lunch orders must be placed, as a group, at least 2 days before your trip. (Be sure to pick up your reserved lunches at the Rafting Center BEFORE you board the shuttle bus to the river.) Each raft includes a 5-gallon water-tight container for your food. Sometimes we can accommodate last minute orders at the snack bar. BREAKFAST & DINNER: Meals are served most days, but advance reservations are recommended. If you're having breakfast with us, come earlier than your Activity "Arrival Time" listed above. Dinner hour lasts until about 1/2 hour after the last group returns to the Rafting Center. SOUVENIR PHOTOS: We try to capture a photo of each raft in the rapids. You can purchase these at our Rafting Center after the trip. Or order them online after you get home.

6 WATERPROOF HI-DEF VIDEO CAMERAS: What a great way to document your adventure! Be sure to post your video on YouTube, or FaceBook, or just send it to your friends. OUTFITTER SHOP: Our outfitter shop carries souvenir shirts and caps, and an assortment of items you might want or need for your trip. Take a moment to browse, before and after your tour. ZIPLINE ADVENTURE: We invite you to enjoy our exciting tree-top ZipLine ride here at the Rafting Center after your trip. Tickets can be purchased in the Outfitter Shop. PAINTBALL TARGET RANGE: Check out our Paintball Target Range, right here at the Rafting Center. Goggles and Gun Rental ($20 value) are FREE to our rafting and biking guests! STAY AN EXTRA DAY: While you're here, we hope you'll take advantage of other programs, like mountain biking, rafting, ziplining, paintball, camping, tent and bunkhouse rentals, meals and more! WAIVER FORMS: Waiver forms must be completed by each individual, for the adventure activities we offer. These forms can be found on our web site (whitewaterchallengers.com) and completed in advance, if you wish. Blank forms are also available at the Rafting Center. TIPPING: We are often asked about tipping. While tipping is not an expected add-on to a below normal wage, it is certainly appreciated, and many of our guests do take the opportunity to acknowledge a job well done.
