5 General Information Cost per participant (Scout or adult): Dorm accommodations: Tent Camping Trailers & vehicles Meal planning Unit provided meals: Event provided meals: Saturday pot-luck dinner. Patrols $20, plus one canned food item (for donation to an area food pantry). This applies to all participants. Please make checks payable to the Archdioceses of Cincinnati. This covers the program, tent camping, provided meals and the patch. Additional costs for dorm accommodations are outlined below. The Spiritual Center has heated dormitory space available at the cost of $20/night/person. This includes bed linens and shower room. Dorms can be partitioned to meet youth/adult/male/female separation. Bring a sleeping bag and a towel, and you should be set! If dorm accommodations are desired, please make arrangements and payment for this directly with the Spiritual Center. Note that the tent camping area is a narrow 30 x 140 yard grass strip. There are a limited number of fire rings towards the front of the strip. Please do not create new fire rings. If open fires are required, please plan on bringing a no-trace portable fireplace. Early arrivers, please set up starting at the back of the strip (as it will be dark when later troops arrive, and we don t want vehicles going past campsites in the dark. Please leave at least a five yard wide center aisle the length of the grass strip for emergency vehicle access. Depending on soil conditions, trailers and vehicles may not be permitted in the camping area. (Good news/bad news if it is cold enough for the ground to be frozen solid, trailers will be permitted at campsites). Plan to drop off gear at the gravel drive in front of the shelter house and park vehicles & trailers in the main parking lot. The shelter house is available for meal preparation and dining. Please share the facility and leave it clean, properly disposing of trash and garbage in the cans provided. There is mix of event provided and unit provided meals (cooking is a required advancement skill!) Friday s cracker-barrel, Saturday breakfast, and Saturday pot-luck dinner (see below for details). Friday SM & SPL cracker-barrel, Saturday lunch, Saturday cracker-barrel, and Sunday continental breakfast. Units are to provide a main dish and a side or dessert sufficient for your group to a shared pot-luck Saturday at the SC dining room. Utensils, bread, beverages and salad are provided. Over two hours of prep time are scheduled, so show off your units camp cooking skills! Please organize your group into patrols, ideally no larger than eight.
6 Planned Events: The program for the event is a full one. Please make every attempt to be at assigned locations on the time indicated in your schedule. Friday Scoutmaster & Senior Patrol Leader cracker barrel: This organizational meeting takes place Friday evening. Please bring rosters with names and number in each patrol, as well as a list of available drivers and available seat belts to support the Pilgrimage Hike. Patrols will be assigned to either Group A or B for the Saturday program. Friday Pilgrimage talk & Compline: Weather permitting (not raining), this will take place on Cross Island. A short talk about pilgrimage followed by Compline (Night Prayer) led by camporee staff. We ll also be recruiting Scouts to lead upcoming prayer sessions. Saturday Relics Chapel: An opportunity to experience this amazing collection of over 1000 relics of our Saints, including the veneration of the True Cross. Note that in the morning session, Mass takes place at 10 AM in the adjacent chapel Scouts are to leave the Relics Chapel quietly, and make their way upstairs to the museum by this time. If you d like a preview of what s in the Relics Chapel (perhaps look up your own patron Saint), try downloading the eshrine App from Apple s App Store. There, you can find that there are two relics of St. George, the patron saint of Scouting: #169 on the lower right of the main altar & #902, on the lower right of the St. Gaspar shrine. Saturday Shrine Museum: Scouts may explore at their own pace the museum, which documents the early settlement northwest Ohio (the Great Black Swamp) during the pioneer days. Settlers to this harsh area were largely of German descent and of the Roman Catholic faith. The displays in the museum reflect their way of life in the mid to late nineteenth century. Special attention has been devoted to the history of the Sisters of the Precious Blood and their contribution to the cultural development of these early pioneers. Pilgrimage Hike: Led by Brother Andrew Kosmowski, Scouts will hike a four-mile roadside route along SR-119 from the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin church, to St. Rose church to St. John the Baptist church before returning to the Spiritual Center. The pilgrimage give Scouts (and adults) to view unique 19th century and early 20th century churches and reflect on the power of faith and sacrifice that led to their construction. All hikers must be dressed for the weather/weather changes. Light day packs for rain gear and at least 1 qt of water are recommend don t carry too much! High-visibility vests will be provided for the hike. We will need adults to drive Scouts to the start point, and shuttle back to the Spiritual Center, hopscotching between the stops along the way in case of stragglers. Drivers and available seat belts need to be identified at the SM/SPL meeting Friday evening. Drivers will be assigned to either the morning or afternoon hikes, ideally with their own units, and thus will be able to experience the Shrine and Museum events. Leaders: It would be helpful to brief/train your scouts on the correct way to cross a road as a group: The group should be single file along the side of the road. Place spotters a few hundred feet in front of and behind the main group to check traffic. Spotters with their arm straight up means halt: arm pointing across the road means safe to cross. The group leader must pay attention to both spotters. When both indicate safe, give the command Cross Now and point his own arm across the road, and the entire group, including spotters, crosses at once, thus taking no more time to cross the road than a single hiker. Note: These are active parishes we are visiting. If sacramental events such as a wedding or funeral are in progress, we will not be entering the parish.
7 First Aid Challenge (by patrol): Scouts should be ready to correctly apply first aid for typical cold weather injuries. Points will be awarded for correct first aid. This could include typical cold-weather injury such as hypothermia, frostbite, and trench/immersion foot. Bonus points for having with you the materials needed to apply first aid. Be prepared!! Leaders: If you ve recently taken a Wilderness First Aid course, you should be able to train your scouts in the appropriate techniques. A pretty good non-technical guide to treating hypothermia and cold injury can be found at: Old Fashioned Scout Game: Specific game is TBD at this time, but will focus on traditional Scout skills such as knots & lashing, fire building, or woods tools. This will further defined in updates to the leader s guide. Saturday Evening Prayer (Vespers), Night Prayer (Compline) and Sunday Morning Prayer (Lauds): We will be recruiting two scouts at Friday s Night Prayer to lead these prayers on Saturday and Sunday. Copies of the prayers will be provided at the SM and SPL cracker-barrel for review by your potential volunteers. Saturday Cracker Barrel & Vocations Panel: We will hold a vocations panel Q&A with representatives of ordination, marriage, and religious life. This will fill a requirement for either AAD or PPXII religious emblems. Retreat Staff Recruiting: We are seeking Life and Eagle Scouts and adults to help with both the Pilgrimage Hike, the First Aid Challenge, and the Scout Games. Adult hikers are needed to help supervise the Pilgrimage Hike. Ideally, for the First Aid and Games events, we d like to hold multiple simultaneous sessions, so need several staff to supervise. Training in advance of the Camporee is required. For information/questions, please contact Harry Heaton (see below). Updates to this Leader s Guide. Updates will be posted to Questions, need addition information? Please contact Mr. Harry Heaton, via or phone. harryheaton@me.com Phone:
