1 Calcasieu Area Council Swamp Derby 2017 Date: March 4-6, 2017 Location: Camp Edgewood Registration: Due Thursday, February 16 th, 2017 NO REGISTRTION WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER 2/16/2017 Check in: 6-9pm Friday, March 3 rd, 2017 Time: Derby starts at 9am Saturday, March 4 th, 2017 Cost: $10 per scout/ $5 per Leader $3 Per extra patches: 1 can of food for Every Scout / Leader (Will be donated to a local food pantry) Description: The Swamp Derby is a test of scout skills and teamwork. Boy Scouts, Ventures Crews, and Webelos are encouraged to come and compete in patrols of 4-8 youth (a wagon). Each patrol/wagon team will work through 8 stations designed to challenge their scout skills and knowledge. Maximum Scouts per Wagon: 8 Minimum Scouts per Wagon: 4 All Scouts must be properly dressed for the weather! All Scouts must have a Full Class A uniform. Any Scout not properly dressed will not be allowed to participate, no exceptions! 3 All units that enter will be expected to have a volunteer for judging a station. If you do not have enough volunteers to run a station, you will be put where needed. Stations: All questions and scenario answers can be found in the Boy Scout handbook/webelos handbook. Here are some of the stations: 1. First aid with stretcher carry 2. Orienteering/Compass- compass bearings, pacing and map reading 3. Emergency Shelter / Can only use items from Equipment list 4. Fire Making- ALL TINDER/KINDLING/WOOD MUST BE BROUGHT WITH YOU. 5. Pioneering all lashings Square Lashing, Diagonal Lashing & Round lashing needed for Boy Scouts. Knots and line toss rescue for WEBLOS 6. Team building stations (work together) Wall climb with injured person. 7. General knowledge- anything from the handbook 8. Shoot out 10 shots per Patrol Scoring: All points must be written on the score sheet. It is the responsibility of the scout Team to complete all stations and get the sheet signed. The Swamp derby is a test of the Scouts knowledge and skills. While the scouts are performing a task, it is illegal for an adult (other than the Judges) to converse with the Scouts. The adults will get ONE warning, and then points will be deducted from the Patrol score. 4 Swamp Derby Judging Guidelines 1. All stations are worth 8 points 2. 1 point can be for scout spirit 3. 1 point can be given at all stations for team work (if they really work together) 4. All stations must be judged exactly the same. 5. Write your judging criteria below (Example: for pioneering: 9 knots, 1 point per knot, 1 point scout spirit and 1Point for Teamwork = 11 Points) 6. Record each Wagon Patrol, number and score 7. Reminder: not everyone can get a perfect score if they don t do it right. Example: if a answer to a question is wrong they can t get a full points you must deduct points for all wrong answers Name and Troop / Pack # Score Station: Judging:

5 Calcasieu Area Council Patch Design Calcasieu Area Council will be doing a p atch design contest for scouts participating in the 2017 Swamp Derby. Patches should have Calcasieu Area Council displayed as well as the event name Swamp Derby All designs must be handed in at time of registration and voted on by the scout s at end of event. The winning patch design will be made into the event patch and handed out at Round table in your district. All designs shall be hand drawn.
