Remember Scouts Be Prepared. Workcoeman Parade Ground will serve as a western town; Dodge City, Kansas. The town s stations will be named after town buildings such as Doc s Office, Livery Stable, Boot Hill Cemetery, etc. Adults and Boy Scouts will be at each station to score each team s skills. Refreshments: Doughnuts, Hot Dogs, Beverages, Snacks will be available for purchase at the Long Branch Saloon, near District Headquarters, for a nominal fee.
2 For all Pack, Den and Station Leaders General Information As the cars arrive, a Senior Boy Scout or Adult will be stationed on the main road to direct parking. Additional senior Scouts will be directing traffic in the parking lots. As each unit gathers their dens (teams) together, the den leader will read the instructions by Marshall Dillon and his Deputies to make sure that your team is ready to blaze the trail through the Old West. Marshall Dillon or his Deputies will inspect the baggage on each covered wagon checking that all boys are in uniform, have rain gear & gloves and your team has a Den Yell, Den Flag, tarp and completed registration form. Once your wagon has been scored, you must send (1) adult representative to the Virginia Hotel for registration. The Hotel Manager and clerks will register each team by Pack number, rank and number of boys. The registration form and fee will be collected at this time. At this time, each team will be given a wagon number, (1) map of the trail and a list of event sequence. Each representative will be reminded about the Indian signs, advised of their wagon judging time slot and told which station they are to begin at. All wagons will be judged and prizes awarded for uniqueness Wagons will have to travel over rough terrain and should be built accordingly. Keep in mind, the boys will be pulling/pushing this wagon all day, take that into consideration. Bigger, isn t necessarily better. Remember, it is the uniqueness that is the distinction. While the representative is registering in the Hotel, each team member (Scout, Adult Leader and family member) are to sign the Guest Book clearly indicating Pack/Scout Rank or Family Member which will be located outside the Hotel. Be certain to refer to your event and station sequence list, which clearly identifies the required stations for each rank. The team will be gen gold nuggets for their points received at each station. If lines develop at some stations you are permitted to move to a less congested station in order to speed up the trip. Each skill station will be geared to quiz each Cub Scout rank and have a varying number of questions & possible points. Each station will be clearly marked with lettered signs along the trail. Some stations have been duplicated to speed the travel and others are geared toward only one rank BE SURE TO READ YOUR CHECK SHEET. After the teams have completed all of their skill stations and recorded their Indian sign message, they then proceed to the First national Bank. The Clerks at the First national Bank will record the team s pack number, Derby Number, time in, weigh in their gold and verify the interpretation of the Indian signs. After the long journey, the teams are free to purchase food and beverages at the Long Branch Saloon while they wait for the awards ceremony. The awards will be determined based on the number of each teams gold and their timein for all completed courses. The Mayor will present the awards. So hey, Partner, saddle up and get ready to have yourself a foot stomping, knee slapping good time down home on the range. 3 Station Leaders Each Pack has been asked to help in order to make this a fun day for the participants. The Derby Committee will provide each station with the necessary questions & answers and any props or materials needed to run the various events (we recommend that each station wear a digital watch or a sweep hand watch). Each station leader should know and understand the questions & answers in order to expedite the team s travel. Each correct answer will equal 1 gold nugget. NO gold nuggets will be given for effort only. The correct answer does not have to match the answer booklet word for word. All stations must have at least (2) adults or 1 adult and 1 Boy Scout present at all times in order to run the events. Substitutes will be available to cover for breaks. All station leaders are expected to keep their area clean and free of litter and bring as many items as they can carry back to the registration area after the last team has gone through. Station leaders and volunteers are expected to arrive at 7:30 am. Someone will be at Camp Workcoeman beginning at 7:00 am. Coffee and donuts will be available as well. The Derby Staff thanks you in advance for your help & looks forward to a knee slappin good time. Covered Wagon Derby Rules: 1. It is preferred that each team be by natural dens (8 boys or less). 2. Scouts and leaders must be in Scout Uniforms. 3. One or more adults (over 21) must accompany each team to look after the Scouts along the trail. 4. Each team is to select one Scout to be the Wagon Boss or spokesman. The den leader must read the following instructions to the Wagon Boss while waiting in line: The Wagon Boss selects the scout to solve the problem or do what is required, BEING SURE EACH BOY HAS A CHANCE TO PARTICIPATE (the boys should confer together before giving the answer to group questions.) 5. Each team can earn 1 or more gold nuggets at each station. 6. As a special bonus, we have posted Indian signs along the trail. When put together they give a message. These signs can be found throughout the trail. Each team that returns to the bank with the correct written answer will receive 10 extra gold nuggets. The Indian signs are taken from the Wolf Book. 7. When your team has completed the journey to all the required stations, you then travel on to the First National Bank for weighing and depositing your gold nuggets. 8. Parents and families are invited to go along with the team, but THEY CANNOT AID IN SOLVING THE PROBLEMS. 9. Each rank has been given a time to be at designated location for Wagon judging. It is your responsibility to be there on time or your wagon cannot be included in the judging. All judging times will be announced for your convenience and each wagon will receive (1) gold nugget for being on time. 10. Awards will be given at the closing ceremony by the Mayor. 11. All posted rules at any station must be followed at all times or you will be asked to leave the area. Rank Events There is a list of items that each rank will need to have in their wagon in order to complete many of the required tasks. NO REQUIRED ITEMS WILL BE PROVIDED AT THE STATIONS. Any missing items will cause the team to miss out on obtaining one or more gold nuggets.
4 Miner 49 er: Fun/Adventure Events Eureka! I ve found the mother lode! This was the cry of the gold miner in California in 1849 when the biggest gold strike in the New World w3as discovered on Sutter s Farm. This was the start of the gold rush and the great western expansion. Fortunes were made by the lucky ones, but most found nothing but empty dreams. Those American s who traveled west became know as Forty Niners. Their most important tool was the big metal pan used to scoop up soil and swirl it around with water. The little flakes of gold were heavier than the soil and sank to the bottom. When most of the dirt was washed out of the pan, the 49er would carefully place the gold dust in a pouch. When he had collected enough gold dust he would take it to the assayer s office to exchange it for cash: $32.00 to the ounce. You will be planning for nuggets just as the 49ers did. You will have 30 seconds to find as many cold nuggets as possible (maximum of 10 nuggets) Cattle Round Up: You are responsible for the cattle accompanying the wagon train. As part of your job it is your duty to cut out from the herd of cows that will provide milk for the cook and young children. You will have 10 tries (to be split among all members of the den) to lasso a milk cow. Each successful attempt at roping is worth 1 nugget. Medicine Man s Pouch: The Indians had their own first aider called the Medicine Man. These individuals studied long and hard under another Medicine Man while they were growing up. They had to learn all the different herbs and plants. They also had to learn which parts of the plant they needed because some plants are poisonous. They learned how berries, roots and other items could be used. One way to test their memory skills was to look at a group of items for a period of time and then tries to remember and identify as many of them as they could. How do you think you might do? Give it a try. Your den will have 15 seconds to observe the 20 items in the Medicine Man s pouch. You will have: Tigers 2 minutes Wolves 1 ½ minutes Bear 1 ¼ minutes Webelos 1 minute Each Den will receive 1 nugget for each 2 items remembered. (Maximum of 10 nuggets) Udderly Challenging Event: You have been lost for a long time and are very thirsty. You lost your canteen and there is no water around. There are no cacti in sight either. What are you going to do? But look what just cam into view a cow! A glass of milk would quench your thirst, but do you know how to milk a cow? You are going to have to milk as fast as you can and get as much milk as possible before the cow gets tired of standing in the heat. This is a timed relay event. Each den member, in turn will have 30 seconds to milk the cow. At the end of your time, return to your den and tag the next person in line to start. 1 4 boys 5 8 boys 9 12 boys 13+ boys ¼ cup /3 cup /2 cup ¾ cup Cup /4 cup /2 cup /4 cup cup
5 Water Bucket Brigade: Every drop of water will be needed to put out the fire at Old MacDonald s Barn. If your den is to form a good bucket brigade, each member must not only be fast but be very careful as well. Every drop of water is important. The den will line up at the starting line with (1) empty bucket. When the starting signal is given, the first boy runs to the barn where there s a full bucket of water. He pours the water into his empty bucket and heads back to his den. The next boy carries the full bucket to the barn and pours it into the empty bucket. He then returns to the den with the empty bucket. This continues until each member of the den has carried a full and empty bucket and at least 8 circuits were completed. This task must be completed in less than 5 minutes. A penalty of (1) nugget from a possible 10 is taken away for every ½ of water missing from the original amount of water given. No nuggets are given if the task is not completed in the 5 minutes allotted. Bunkhouse Stampede: The cattle have all stampeded and all cowpokes must exit the bunkhouse as fast as possible to round them up. Two (2) boards, 8 feet long and 6 wide x ½ thick is gen to the den. There are eight loops in each board. Each member of the den puts their left foot in the loop of one board, and then puts their right foot in the loop on the other board. Then, working as a team and holding on to the longer end of the strings, they walk from one end of the bunk house to the other (Approx. 10 feet) The total time it takes all the members to reach each end of the bunk house will determine the number of nuggets awarded. 1 4 boys 5 8 boys 9 12 boys 13+ boys >2 1/2 minutes >3 minutes >3 1/2 minutes >4 minutes >4 1/2 minutes >5 minutes >5 1/2 minutes >6 minutes >6 1/2 minutes >7 minutes >7 1/2 minutes
