4 Trailblazer District First Aid Meet Competition Rules 1. The Troop Leader (or adult representative) is to check in with the registrar between 8:00am and 8:45am with a complete list of patrols. At this time you will be given your starting station assignments and final instructions. 2. The Patrol Leader is to be in charge of his Patrol at all times. The Patrol Leader, or his designee, will act as the official spokesman for the Patrol during all first aid scenarios. 3. All Patrol members are expected to stay with their Patrol for the duration of the competition. This includes breaking for lunch. All participants are expected to wear the Scout uniform. 4. Victims are not allowed to advise or assist the Patrol. Victims are encouraged to cooperate with the patrol and not resist treatment. 5. The Patrol is expected to actually perform as much of the first aid care as possible. Splinting, dressing & bandaging wounds, moving & positioning the patient, examining injuries and similar care are expected to be performed. NO CREDIT will be given for just telling the judge what you would do, even if the information is correct (unless specifically so instructed at the time as per the following). The following are the only instances where credit will be earned for telling the judge what would be done: A. Calling for help B. Sending Scouts for help C. Using water or any liquids. D. Making the victim vomit E. Removing any clothing (other than shoes, hats, gloves or rolling up shirt sleeves or pant legs) 6. DO NOT actually breathe into a victim s mouth. If required to do rescue breathing or perform external chest compressions for CPR. Proper positioning of the patient and correct techniques should be demonstrated. 7. Abdominal thrusts or back blows, if required, are to be simulated and done gently. 8. For some problems, the exact nature of the injury may not be apparent at first. However, enough information will be provided to begin treatment. Judges may provide additional information on the nature of the injury and the patient condition as you provide care.
5 9. Patrols may be given the problem in some cases. In others, they will need to observe and examine the victim to determine the treatment needed. The Patrol Leader may ask questions of the Judge. Each patrol must complete victim care within a specified period. Approximately 10 minutes per station. 10. Patrols will be judged on their skills in solving the problem. Care must be given in the correct order as outlined in the First Aid Merit Badge book and proper care administered within the specified time. Patrols must participate in all problems. 11. The evaluation by the Judges and points awarded will be final. 12. First aid supplies must be provided by each Patrol participating. The sharing of equipment and supplies will not be allowed outside of the patrol. First aid supplies are to be of the type that would be carried on a day hike and should not take up a space larger than a fanny pack with the exception of a walking stick. 13. First aid equipment should include, but not limited to: First Aid Merit Badge book and Scout handbook Gauze Pads Roll of adhesive tape 3 roller bandages Large dressings Protective gloves (NOT LATEX)
