1 Welcome to Issue #24 10 August 17 Saturday 12th August Gr 2 & 5 Working Bee Monday 14th August Pupil free Day Wednesday 16th August Gr 4-6 Athletics Carnival Thursday 17th August Gr 5 Excursion What a great start to term three The first three weeks of this term have been action packed for the parents and friends of Brighton Primary School. It all started on July 21 in week one, with the Trivia Night. Brighton Primary School parents filled the Brighton Town Hall dressed as characters from the Wizard of Oz and popular board games, the Flintstones, Parisians, Hawaiian Vikings, Santas and Christmas helpers to name a few. Thank you Tash Scott and her team: Marlea Naughton, Lorinda Morley, Rebecca O Toole and Fleur Mumford who organised an evening of fun and participation. There was something for everyone: Trivia, Karaoke and dancing. Thank you to our school councillors who manned the bar and helped with the clean up late in the evening. Everyone had a t rrific time and they raised $ for our school. The next weekend there was the jumper presentation for the Dads Footy Match. AND last Saturday there was the big match the Dads Footy Match between Brighton and Brighton Beach Primary Schools at the Old Brighton Football Ground, corner of South and Beach Roads. Although the wind was icy and it was cold on the interchange bench, the sun shone for the whole match, and there was a big crowd to cheer on the teams. Saturday was a huge team effort: Tash Scott was the event organiser Lorinda Morley organised the jumpers and the player registration Jo Robinson coordinated the volunteers and organised St john s ambulance Nick Paltiglou coordinated the players for Brighton Primary School s mighty Lions John Black was the player coach Brad Price played in the match and helped earn $ in generous sponsorship for the school. As well, there were the ladies manning the cake stall and the kiosk, parents cooking on the BBQ, others collecting a gold coin donation at the gate and selling programs. It was a mammoth day, enjoyed by everyone who was there and it continued well into the evening. The Dads Footy Match is a great family day that involves everyone and has become quite a tradition. The money raised at the Trivia Night and the Dad s Footy match will pay to resurface the floor of our Gym to a commercial finish. We are working towards this being done over the September holidays. Thank you to everyone for all the hours of planning, organisation, training and generosity of spirit that has made these events such a great success for our school as both great community occasions and very profitable fundraisers.

Brene Brown The Year 6 yoga program explored the theme of COURAGE this week. As humans, displaying courage explicitly or implicitly has relevance on a daily basis, or at minimum, in so many circumstances and at times in our lives. Whether your child/children are in prep through to year 6, or any other stage, they all have an innate courageous nature, and so do we as adults! Our individual temperaments and life circumstances especially early on (and in the present) either enable or discourage this innate courage. Being courageous can be displayed in various ways such as being honest with ourselves/others, saying sorry for an injustice, making a decision to take a slightly different life path, finishing a job that is not giving you any joy, changing jobs, taking on a new hobby that has always intrigued you or simply taking time for yourself and giving yourself some space with compassion. Sometimes saying nothing and actually listening to others is courageous while at other times explicitly asserting oneself is an act of courage. Asking for help and showing vulnerability is rarely comfortable but always an act of courage. How courageous do you feel today? Perhaps reflect on this in your life. 6 Your Child and Social Media Social Media has become a huge part of many people s lives. There are many apps, websites and games that are targeted to different groups of people including children. Social Media generally includes sharing personal information about yourself online such as status updates and photos to an audience that can include friends, family and unknown people. It is critical that we are aware of what our children are doing online and what each of these social media platforms entails. Many people are surprised to discover that most social media platforms do in fact have age restrictions on them. 7 This week I have a special reflection on the Dad s Footy Match written by Nick Paltoglou. Nick is the key person responsible for our wonderful Dad s Footy, he has been working behind the scenes for months and it is because of his dedication that this day has been such a success. Thanks Nick. A great day, and a great game of dads footy. The Battle of Brighton Last Saturday the Brighton Primary Lions took on their friends and longtime rivals the Brighton Beach Dreamers in the annual dad s football match, better known as the Battle of Brighton. The game was played at the South Road oval on a cold and windy, late winter afternoon in front of a crowd of more than 500 family and friends. The day started with a wonderful game of junior football between two local U12 Girls teams. The teams from the Brighton Beach Kangaroos and the East Brighton Vampires played a game that all of the participants should be proud of, in front of a bigger crowd than most would have experienced. The Vampires won the match, but the winner was football and the broader community. Next came the Battle of Brighton. The match was tough and close, and our men did the Lion s tradition proud, however in the end the Dreamers won by 7 points. Our dads played their hearts out all afternoon. Player of the day David Mason inspired with some amazing marking, passing and running. He was supported valiantly by many of the veterans of past games, such as Peter Morley, Anthony Wiseman, Ryan Thorpe, Nik Kemp and Luke Stewart. Our captain courageous Andrew Naughton and his trusty sidekick Ben Weber showed our squad of over 50 dads exactly how to play the game in the best possible spirit. A special mention too for some of our new dads. The Lions team featured 12 dads playing in their first Battle of Brighton. Many were playing their first ever game of Aussie rules. Of them, the giant Brit James Wewer and our newest kiwi and team Physio Bruce Gilmour made great contributions both on and off the field. Off field the day was an amazing success both as a fundraiser and community event for both of the schools involved. BBq s, Cake Stalls and Canteens were running all day, with many school parents working very hard to keep our kids and friends fed. Special mention should be made of a number of our parents who worked extremely hard both organising the event and coordinating many moving parts on the day itself. Friends of Brighton leaders Tash Scott and Lorinda Morley worked tirelessly coordinating volunteers and players jumpers amongst other jobs. Aaron White also assisted greatly ironing out behind the scenes dramas to ensure the day ran smoothly. Joanne Robinson and Megan Paltoglou worked tirelessly all day, while Brad Price organised team sponsorships, and did a stellar job. A very special thanks to our very own Matt Pillios from Buxtons, who not only sponsored the event, but played a major part in the organisation of the day, attending meetings and conducting some brilliant interviews to promote the event. There were so many others who helped make the day a success filling in positions like coach, runner, boundary umpire, and team physio. Then there were those who sold pizza s, made cakes and moved rubbish. All were fellow parents and all helped make the day a financial and social success for our school.
