January 2017 This year started off with a bit of a downer. There has been a drop in membership, but let us counter it by focusing on the LCI theme of women membership. As us males know, we cannot live with them, neither without them. Thus, to all the so-called male clubs, here is a challenge. Your lady Lions are there to support you. Why not form a branch club for your ladies? Also, invite ladies to your meetings and get them involved in your clubs. The following is a short. but pertinent message: PS. A list of necessities supplied and items put in boxes to go to underprivileged families. 3 Port Alfred Lions - We Serve in District 410D Christmas Day 2016 and Christmas cakes handed out to various organisations who are on duty to serve the public on Christmas day. Security company - Multi security with Lions Port Alfred SAPS Staff on duty with the 3 Lions Fire department staff on duty with Lions Ilana and Lorenda de Klerk and John Johnston Netcare Hospital in PA - Hospital staff with Lions Lorenda and Ilana De Klerk and John Johnston Emergency services.

4 King Williamstown - We Serve in District 410D December is usually busy for most Lions Clubs and, for the KWT Lions Club that is no exception. We had a braai stand on 3rd December and, although it was fairly quiet, we managed to bring in some funds and let the public see the Lions in action. We had our General Business Meeting on 7th December and congratulate Lion Pedro de Abreu on receiving his 20 year award! We treated about 80 senior citizens from Kingspark, the BESL flats and Breidbach to a braai on Friday 16th December. The weather was perfect for once, the fires burnt well and the sosaties, boerewors, salads, rolls and fruit cake and custard went down very well. Later that day Lion Russell and Lions Lady Pat Volker graciously opened their home for our Christmas party which took the form of a bring and braai. The children and there were many present which made the evening very pleasant spent hours in the hot tub and had great fun while the adults had fellowship and enjoyed the fine food and salads and dessert. We missed those who could not attend. The Breidbach soup kitchen team made their monthly visit very special for the several hundred folk who look forward to the visit from the Lions and we thank Lions Peter Moses, Ryan von Abo, Ulrich and Susan Hagens, Desmond Coetzee and Lions Lady Marlene Moses for their hard work on that day. Over 28 food hampers were put together by willing Lions hands and then distributed by Lions PJ Mauer, Peter Moses, Desmond Coetzee, Uli and Susan Hagens to families who were in need in the KWT and Breidbach areas. It has been said: Choose kindness. You will have many opportunities in life to help those who can never repay you in some way, but compassion has a greater reward than any payback ever could... and those involved in our December activities found that to be so true. The joy and appreciation from both the elderly and the young at this time of the year makes the service that we perform one to another so worthwhile and invigorates us to keep going and to do more in the months to come. Thank you, fellow Lions! On Christmas Eve a number of us gathered at the Den to pack the toys for distribution in our annual Santa Service. Santa Brian von der Decken donned his outfit (it has taken over 20 years for him to be invited to be Santa either there is enough grey in his hair or no one else would do it?) and then we went, firstly, to the KWT Child and Youth Care Centre when toys, sweets and a juice were given to each of the children who sang beautifully for us in appreciation. From there we went to the Grey Hospital where we spent some time with the children unfortunate enough to be in hospital at Christmas and they, too, each received a toy and some goodies.

5 Gonubie Lions - We Serve in District 410D Recently donated beautiful hand made clothing and blankets to Port Rex as a contribution towards their goodie bags for their Wings and Wishes project. A three day Christmas Market was held at our local shopping centre which attracted a lot of attention and gave us an opportunity to raise much needed funds. Right: Both grateful recipients of new specs from Lions during To round off 2016 Gonubie Lions held their annual Senior Citizens Christmas tea party at Gonubie Primary School which was attended by approximately 120 residents who enjoyed a pleasant afternoon of socialising, delicious eats and good entertainment culminating in the singing of Christmas Carols. The final event of the year was when Lions paid a surprise visit to Sunnymead, which is a subeconomic residence for pensioners, presenting each resident with a R gift voucher to spend at Super Spar for their Christmas shopping.

6 Uitenhage Lions - We Serve in District 410D The Uitenhage Lions Club in partnership with NPO Fuel on Wheels and their support group Entangled Freedom Motor Cycle Club organized a Feeding Project at Innes Primary School over the period 11 to 14 January Innes PS does not receive a subsidy for their school feeding scheme and has to raise their own funds to be able feed the 50% of their approximately 650 pupils. For Lions to be able to provide a service to the Community we rely entirely on the Community for their support, said Lion President Hein De Vrey. To this effect donations of nonperishable food received from Bergsig Special School was used as the basis for the project. After the menus were finalized by Innes PS the balance of perishable foods was donated by Megasave Cash and Carry, Cuyler Butchery and Slabberts Butchery which contributed to the provision of meals to approximately 560 pupils.

7 St Croix Lions Club - We Serve in District 410D Christmas wrapping 5 23 December We held our Christmas wrapping project at Greenacres Shopping Centre. Five organizations assisted us in this project. The project was a great success and we managed to raise just over R which was distributed amongst the organizations which assisted in the project. Christmas wrapping thank you ceremony 12 January We held a Christmas wrapping thank you ceremony with all organizations who assisted in this project. The ceremony was a great success with all organizations enjoying eats and discussing with one another the wonderful work they do in the community. Member Christmas Party 17 December We held a Christmas party for our members at Angelos. We all had a wonderful fellowship evening. Distribution of Christmas Toys Christmas toys were donated to us by Grey Junior School and Collegiate School. We distributed the toys to various organizations: Doors of Hope, Sister Ethal Missionvale Church Day adventure Play school, Maureen Lamb Cancer Kids and children in Noupoort

8 Sedgefield Lions Club - We Serve in District 410D We closed off our year with our now annual "Carols by Candlelight held once again at our clubhouse. The weather was unkind to our Herald Angels and all who came along to enjoy the evening, but of course we were grateful for the rain. The celebration continued when everyone moved into the (cosy) clubhouse! Lions Alison and Debbie also assisted at NSRI fund raising "Beach Festival" where they did registrations for the early morning beach run and walk. Thanks to those who supported our talent competition - we had an inkling that Sedgefield has some talented magicians, singers, dancers and artists and we were right! Thank you Lion Bev Fowler for your initiative and vision. Watch this space next year for bigger and better! Lion Eric Roper put together a collection team for fund raising on behalf of the Life Guards. Eric ordered special collection tins and besides the collection, tins were also placed in guest houses in Sedgefield. An interesting talk on the Olympics of yesteryear and modern was also arranged with a collection on the evening as well. We are proud to be associated with the professionalism of our lifeguards and value the input they put into the safety of all on our beaches. Lastly- wishing all our fellow Lions a wonderful, happy, safe, fruitful and healthy 2017!

9 We Serve in District 410D Gonubie recently held a raffle with the funds raised going to the Carel du Toit Centre where deaf children are taught to speak, after two months of selling tickets the draw was done at the Seniors Christmas tea and won by no other than Lion Sharn Piater from Port Rex Lions Club. (right with painting) Congratulations Sharn... Secretaries: Don t forget to complete your monthly Activities report on the LCI website. From this report LCI will credit your club with any achievements towards the Centennial Service Challenge and your Club will receive recognition. Multiple District 410 Convention This will be held from 26th April to 29th April in Cape Town. Multiple District 410 is celebrating 60 years of Lionism in South Africa and 100 years of Lionism in the world. Join your fellow Lions at this special celebration. Register at See you there..
