1 September 2016 Mid-Monthly Newsletter of Lions International District 202M Marianna s Murmurings determination makes things happen I have started the club visiting program and Simon and I are the opportunity. I would like to thank those clubs that I have visited for their friendly and courteous manner in which we have been made welcome. It is good to be part of the fellowship, camaraderie in the clubs no matter if the club is nearly 60 years or a mere 3 years old. Did you know that worldwide Lions have already served 100 million people since the start of the Centennial Service Challenge. Is your club already part of this? If not please start reporting to LCI so you can be part of it all. Part of the Centennial Service is the Youth. So why not this year take part in the Peace Poster Competition Challenge. Promote this challenge to the Intermediate Years (11 13 years). The theme this year is Celebrating Peace Get your kit from head office and visit the schools. It is a good opportunity to raise the profile of Lions among schools, teachers and parents. This is also a way to encourage the parents to join a club and help to make a difference in our community. As we said in our first announcement, come to Tauranga which is a destination and the centre to plan something local or take a tour to nearby and exciting places most within one hour or less travel time. 4 The ROAR from Zone 4 - Activities for August 2016 During the next 12 months, Lions Clubs throughout the world will be celebrating the LIONS Centennial year. Lions Clubs International was formed by Melvin Jones in Chicago USA in Carterton Central Lions Club recently hosted Otago University 3rd year medical students. Guest speakers were organised and they spoke to the students about living with or helping people with disabilities in the community. Members collected for the Cancer Society, helped with food for The Big Latch On, and made a knee blanket for Roseneath Aged Care facility. The annual Daffodil Festival is on 11 th September and Carterton Lions Club members will be very busy organising sites, running road crossings and supplying the hungry visitors with our famous hotdogs & chips from the Food Van. Work has begun installing a new ceiling in the St Johns building at Clareville for Wairarapa A & P Association and members have continued with plantings at Carters Reserve. Masterton Holdsworth Lions Club members helped with the Cancer Society Daffodil Day by manning a street collection site and also helped with bunching the daffodils for sale to businesses. The club recently catered for a Mid-Winter Christmas dinner for the Te Awhina Cameron Community House Board and volunteers. Wairarapa Ruamahanga Club Branch held a very successful Monster Garage Sale recently with proceeds going to the Special Winter Olympics Trust. This will help Rebecca Heath achieve her goal of competing as a downhill skier at these Olympics in This was the first project for the newly established Club Branch that now has 15 members. Masterton Host Waipoua Lions Club will be sponsoring the Intercollegiate Music Competition again this year. It is being held at Rathkeale College on Thursday 8 September. A good opportunity to listen to our amazing local talent. The annual Lions Community Fireworks display will be held this year on Friday 4 November at Solway Showgrounds. Gates open at 6.30 pm. Featherston Lioness Club has been invited by the Featherston Beautification Group to celebrate the installation of the sign at the entrance to Featherston by Otairua Reserve. It is on 3rd September; the club gave a donation towards this project. The Vet cycle challenge is on again, 2nd October and both the Featherston Lioness and Lions Clubs help to make this a day memorable for the cyclist. They love the Anzac hall, the lunches we provide and the wonderful scenery South Wairarapa have to offer. Greytown Lioness Club held a Bottle Auction at a meeting which was fun and raised funds for Club activities. Shirley Nightingale attended the Dinner meeting and delighted members with her shoe collection. A talent contest Greytown s got Groove will be held in November. Entry forms are now available from South Wairarapa Computers or on facebook.com/greytownsgotgroove Greytown Lions Club will host a Meet your Candidates Evening at the Greytown Town Centre at 7 pm on Wednesday 21 September. The annual gutter clean at Cobblestones Museum took place over two recent weekends. The club has temporarily stopped selling pea straw to prevent pea weevil from spreading Martinborough Lioness Club hosted the Ruamahanga Whaitua Water Conservation Committee, community meeting in Martinborough recently. Members helped with another well supported annual Daffodil Day appeal which funds research and assists those who live with cancer.
