Fitting that at the half way point in our Lions year, the New Year challenges us to set goals for the year. In reflection, those times in my life that I achieved the most, I also challenged myself to reach beyond what I thought I could achieve. Stretch goals demand we set a vision for the future not knowing exactly how we will get there. However we know what the end looks like, and the tools to help us reach our goal. I challenge you to set your goals for 2015 with a clear vision knowing what you want to achieve. Then step out on faith that you will find the way to get there. Look around you, there are Lion partners to assist you as long as you provide leadership for the teamwork. Here is an example of a goal: To participate in the District C Convention musical comedy contest on March 12th. You stated a clear goal while remaining flexible to decide how the presentation will be put together. Join me at the Spring Convention to Strut Your Stuff before your fellow Lions. Set your goal, take a risk, practice, have fun and get invested in your Lions organization at the district level. Moving out of your comfort level will give you the thrill of accomplishment, regardless of how you place in the contest. See you there! 2 I'll Take Measles for $1000, Alex. Contestants: Remember to phrase your response in the form of a question. If you've been in front of a TV at all since the 1980's, you've probably seen an episode or two of the quiz show "Jeopardy" with host Alex Trebek. It's all good fun, and the twist is that contestants are given the answer first, and have to phrase their response in the form of a question. For example: Answer: "This only costs a dollar and will save a life." Question: "What is a MEASLES shot?" Ding Ding Ding Ding..."That's correct. And we'll move on to Double Jeopardy, right after these messages..." While Jeopardy is a lively game show, the loss life around the world from measles is no joking matter. In fact, according to the Lions Clubs International Foundation, 430 people per DAY die of this preventable disease. If you been paying attention during the past six months, you're certainly aware that our district is now fully engaged in The Sully Hat Project for Measles -- a noble quest to save 100,000 lives from the worldwide scourge of measles. The Clock is Ticking -- It's time to get serious. The Sully Hat Project for Measles uses my US Airways Captains hat autographed by Captain Sully Sullenberger to serve as a fundraising focal point to raise both awareness and funds to fight this deadly disease. As an incentive to give generously, WE WILL BE PRESENTING THIS VALUABLE HAT TO THE INDIVIDUAL, CLUB, DISTRICT OR MULTIPLE DISTRICT THAT GIVES THE MOST MONEY TOWARD THIS PROJECT. This fundraising-lifesaving initiative ends June 30th, Here the main bullet points: As I have told you in previous newsletters, the Kent Lions Club has generously stepped forward to match any District C donations up to $1000 per club toward our measles campaign. We have 47 Clubs, so if every club gave $1000, we will have the potential to raise $93,000 this Lions year. We will initiate a sixty day Crowdfunding appeal in April and May, to raise funds from the non-lion public. Page 2

3 All funds given to this campaign are Melvin Jones Fellowship eligible, and tax deductible to the extent of the law. We have all our information on our 19C website, and a dedicated Facebook Page to disseminate information around the world. We have been promised a Lion Magazine article in the late winter/early spring of Make your donation directly to the LCIF One Shot-One Life Measles initiative. Write "Sully Hat Project for Measles" on your check, or make that annotation in the Special Instructions box of the LCIF website if paying by credit card. After Donating, please contact PDG Barbara Ellis and tell her how much you donated. She can then keep track of all the donations so we can know who has donated the most. ba.ellis658@gmail.com What Can Your Lions Club do? Our goal is to save 100,000 lives. That means a direct appeal of $100,000 is on the table. If your club routinely gives an annual gift of $1000 or more to LCIF as many clubs do, your donation is supremely appreciated. If your club gives less than $1000 per year, it is my hope that you will get together as a club (or Zone, see below) think outside the box and plan a special "Measles" fundraiser to increase your donation to $1000 so we can maximize the generous Kent matching funds. Thinking outside the box #1: Puyallup Valley Lions and Tacoma Downtown Lions both cobbled together individual Lion donations with their club donation to reach the $1000 mark. Thinking outside the box #2: C-2 and C-6 Zone Chairs Sandy Johnston and Pat Bucknell have gotten together and planned a gala fun evening on Valentine's Day, February 14. The event will have music, auctions and entertainment. ALL THE PROCEEDS WILL GO TO THE MEASLES CAMPAIGN. The full flyer is on our event calendar, and we hope other clubs and zones will put on their thinking caps to find ways to get donations to the $1000 per club benchmark.
