3 ZONE 4 ENJOY A JOINT COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT Saturday morning 22 February 2914 at 09:00 Lions from Zone 4 met at the McClellands Adult Centre for Mentally Challenged to treat residents to some TLC and fun. An outdoor picnic tea was arranged in their pretty garden under the trees where approximately 80 residents and staff were treated to biscuits, juice, sweets and ice cream. After sharing a lot of fun the last half of the morning was sent dancing in the hall.

4 ATTENDING MUTLIPLE DISTRICT 410 REGIONAL LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE I was recently very privileged to attend an extremely interesting Lions Clubs International Multiple District 410 Regional Lions Leadership Institute held in Wellington.Under the guidance of GLT Multiple District Chairperson Nick Mare with facilitators Wally Smith, Cliff Hocking, Beaulieu Mare and Paula Lang in tow approximately 38 Lions were taken on an amazing Lionistic journey covering every conceivable aspect of our great organization. A special word of thanks is extended to all our facilitators who must have spent many hours preparing these incredibly informative presentations. 5 GONUBIE LIONS CLUB 30 JANUARY : BINGO AT SETTLERS RETIREMENT SETTLEMENT Lions Mike & Jenny were an awesome team All eyes down and enjoying themselves 12 FEBRUARY : TEN PIN BOWLING SOCIAL EVENING A great time was had by one and all

6 17 FEBRUARY : OUR LITERACY PROJECT R2, worth of school books were donated to the Isiaha 58 Junior Primary School. Headmistress Colleen and Pupils were extremely grateful.

7 PORT REX LIONS CLUB held a steak evening recently. Music was provided.the background was a cafe theme. Gonubie & Cambridge Lions supported the event as well as friends and family. A good time was had by all

9 Sedgefield Lions Club - WE SERVE 1) Our Sedgefield Lions club has decided to assist the ladies who started the wonderful project of assisting the new born babies in the Knysna Provincial Hospital. Twenty starter packs (consisting of a receiving blanket, leggings, a knitted jersey, a cap and a soft toy) are distributed per week, and some of the babies, without these packs, would go home with nothing. However, as Mary Ann, the project co-ordinator explained to us, they also visit the children in the pediatric section of the hospital, and also take gifts of clothing, puzzles, books etc. We have appealed to our community for donations of wool, fleece material and t shirt material, as well as arranged an army of knitters. Our local wool shop will run an account for our club and provide wool and the pattern to anyone interested in knitting for this project. (See pics 1, 2, 3, 4). 2) Russell Kearney and his dog Kei rest up overnight in Sedgefield I met Russell Kearney and Kei on Saturday morning, our rendezvous was at 11 am outside Montecello. I arrived a little early, thank goodness, and had no sooner stopped my car when I saw the two of them walking down the road towards me on their leg from Wilderness to Sedgefield. So far this duo have covered a remarkable 3300km. Russell, a cancer survivor, and his dog Kei, also a survivor (an abandoned township pup who beat the odds against the deadly parvo virus) cover about 25 km a day, setting off early in the morning to get to their destination before the heat of the day sets in. Russell is writing his biography inspired by his disease, faith, hope and love. His book will be called Keep Walking and he plans to donate money to animal welfare organizations with the proceeds. Our thanks go to Lions Tony and Di Fletcher for taking Russell and Kei under their wings and giving them a bed and hot meal on Saturday night. Tonight with the help of Knysna Lions they will be staying in a backpackers in Knysna. Happy and safe walking Russell and Kei! 11 3) We had four of our Lions getting married in 2013 congratulations to Charles and Samantha la Cock, Mel and Adrienne Bartlett and Jaco and Gerda van der Westhuizen. (Pic 1 shows Mel and Adrienne and Pic 2 shows Jaco and Gerda). 4) Our newest Lion, Johan du Toit was inducted on the 20 February. At the same function, we gave a warm welcome to our transferee Lion, Quinta Banghart who originally hails from the Potchefstroom Club. (pic 3 shows Quinta with Lion Alison, pic 4 shows Quinta handing over the Potch banner to Sedge Lions President Zwaai, pic 5 shows MC and Past President Mel Bartlett, with President Zwaai (sponsor) and Johan du Toit. 5) Sedgefield Lions donated boxes of books to the library in Karatara pic 6 shows the librarians ready to tackle the task of sorting out the books.

12 6) Our Sedgefield Lions Care and Share Bags will definitely be an annual project. This very rewarding project started with a donation of 40 tog bags. We then went to different schools and asked them to identify their most needy pupils or children in the community. Ages ranged from toddlers to teenagers. Once our lists were drawn up we soon had the wonderful community of Sedgefield offering to fill the bags with clothes, toys, sweets, stationery for school etc. We were also donated dried foods and took these to the needy families in our township and our village. Our new tog bags (this year sporting our Lions Logo) have already been posted to us! 7) Once again with the help of Sedgefield Tourism we had a lovely Carols By Candlelight evening. See pics 7 10

14 ST CROIX LIONS CLUB Lions of St Croix s 1 st Community project Feb We gave the old folk at Cuyler Holmes in Port Elizabeth Tea and Cake and had a wonderful afternoon playing BINGO. President Karin, Lion Collette (Community Projects Co-Ordinator), Lion Karlien (Fundraiser) Lion Esther, Lion Sanet (First Vice & Treasurer) and our Happy Helpers for the day Shadene, Roxy, Gorgia and her friend.

15 UITENHAGE LIONS CLUB For the second year the Uitenhage Lions Club assisted the popular Kromberg and Schubert Fun run by manning a water point for the approximately 500 runnersthat participated in the Five km Fun run. Last year the Club received an award for the best water point in the event.

16 The Club paid a visit to the Lake Farm Centre which is a Community for intellectually challenged adults. Members were accompanied by a qualified hairdresser who provided approximately 40 locals with haircuts. In addition the members had a braai for all the adults who occupy the Centre followed by a fellowship.

18 WHEN YOU THOUGHT I WASN'T LOOKING A message every adult should read because children are watching you and doing as you do, not as you say. When you thought I wasn't looking I saw you hang my first painting on the refrigerator, and I immediately wanted to paint another one. When you thought I wasn't looking I saw you feed the birds in winter, and I learned that it was good to be kind to animals. When you thought I wasn't looking I saw you make my favourite cake for me, and I learned that the little things can be the special things in life. When you thought I wasn't looking I saw you make a meal and take it to a friend who was sick, and I learned that we all have to help take care of each other. When you thought I wasn't looking I saw you take care of our house and everyone in it, and I learned we have to take care of what we are given. When you thought I wasn't looking I saw how you handled your responsibilities, even when you didn't feel good, and I learned that I would have to be responsible when I grow up. When you thought I wasn't looking I saw you hold the door open for others and heard 'thank you' and 'you're welcome', and I learned respect for others. When you thought I wasn't looking I saw tears come from your eyes, and I learned that sometimes things hurt, but it's all right to cry. When you thought I wasn't looking I saw that you cared, and I wanted to be everything that I could be.. When you thought I wasn't looking I learned most of life's lessons that I need to know to be a good and

19 productive person when I grow up. When you thought I wasn't looking I looked at you and wanted to say, Thanks for all the things I saw when you thought I wasn't looking.' TO ALL OF THE PEOPLE I KNOW WHO DO SO MUCH FOR OTHERS, BUT THINK THAT NO ONE EVER SEES. LITTLE EYES SEE A LOT.. Each of us (parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle, teacher, friend) influences the life of a child. How will you touch the life of someone today? Live simply. Love generously. Care deeply. Speak kindly.
