More than 150 enthusiasts, from across the sporting divide, travelled to the hotel to get the inside track into what makes the mind tick when it comes to sporting success. Both O Sullivan and Quinlan regaled the audience with stories of success and the discipline and mindset needed to achieve at the highest level. Gerry Hussey described the role psychology plays in sports "Most of those people that become geniuses need an ignition and so when they see someone like Alan Quinlan lift a Heineken Cup or Sonia O Sullivan win a World Championship that is the ignition they need to inspire them, that provides a tangible pathway to success," he said. Overall on the night the bottom line emphasised by O Sullivan, Quinlan and Hussey was that without a healthy, positive and driven mind, the body will not follow. While ability is crucial, it s a case of mind over matter! Check out our website for podcast interviews with Sonia O Sullivan and Alan Quinlan. Sports Psychologist back due to popular demand Following the Mind over Matter forum, there was a big demand from the audience and wider public to get more of an insight into sports psychology and the role it plays in local everyday sport. In response to that demand, we are pleased to announce that Gerry Hussey has agreed to host an information evening on Monday 27th February in the Ardboyne Hotel. Gerry Hussey will be concentrating on some of the following key areas and bringing the focus to a local level -What makes a player tick? Methods that may best suit an individual player/athlete and performance management techniques for coaches and mentors. This is sure to be an insightful yet passionate workshop, one that should strike a cord with players and coaches of all sports. Gerry likes to engage with the audience and questions from the floor play an integral part of his overall presentation. Places on this workshop are limited, therefore to secure your place booking in advance is required. Registration forms are now available to download from our website or to receive a registration form please call our offices on or mlsp@meathcoco.ie Workshop: Sports Psychology at a local level Venue: Ardboyne Hotel, Time: 7.30pm 9.30pm Date: Monday 27th February 2012 Gerry Hussey

2 Meath Local Sports Partnership The transformation of Trim! Operation Transformation Walk 2012 The historical town of Trim may have been voted Ireland s cleanest town, but on Saturday 14 th January it proved that it was also Meath s most active town. Over 1600 walkers descended on the town to support the Operation Transformation walk which was organised by Meath Local Sports Partnership in association with the Irish Sports Council and was part of the nationwide walks held in every county around Ireland. We may be in the latter end of winter, but spring was definitely in the air both in terms of weather and activity with families to the fore. Last year s Operation Transformation leader Sinead Heffernan led the walk along with Carmel Halpin from the HSE. The route followed the 3.7km Sli route which saw walkers commence at Trim Castle, out to Newtown, down by Marcy Regan s and back via the link road to High street to the finish at Castle Street. Sinead has maintained her active lifestyle since appearing on the Operation Transformation programme in 2011 and has firmly set her eyes on completing a half marathon later this year. Out in force to assist the walkers on the day were the Gardai, Civil Defence and stewards from Trim AC and individual volunteers. Bird s Supervalu in kindly donated all of the water with Trim Castle hotel donating the refreshing tea and coffee afterwards. For anyone interested in participating in either our walking programmes or our meet n trains/learn to run programmes should contact Meath LSP office at or check out the website for further information. In 2011, the 120 people who participated in our learn to run programmes also completed their first ever 10km. Could 2012 be your year???? If so, contact us. 5 SHINE Update SHINE an initial one year programme brought together in 2011 some of Meath s finest young sporting talent from athletics, target shooting, cycling and archery. These athletes met on a monthly basis attending workshops delivered by some of Irelands top practitioners in the field of sport from high performance planning, time management, injury prevention, performance psychology, brand management and sponsorship John Smith, 22, Compound Archery Since starting SHINE I have noticed a remarkable improvement in my performance. Now, through the Link2BActive programme, local sports facilities/ clubs in Meath are offering job seekers, youth, disability and older adults the opportunity to use their facilities such as gyms, swimming pools, golf courses, Pitch n Putt and more at reduced costs. Get active with these offers from under 50c a day! 6 Mature Movers programme participant s profile: Jim and Pat Smith, originally from Dublin, came to in Initially they found that first year tough at times, even wondering if they had made the right move. That was until 2009 when a leaflet for Meath LSP s Mature Movers activity programme came through the door. Pat realised that this is what they were looking for an opportunity to be active and meet people of their own age; Jim wasn t as enthusiastic but after careful persuasion agreed to attend the following week. Both agree that from the time they entered the Pitch `n Putt club to join the Mature Movers activity programme to now, that they have always been made feel very welcome. Mature Movers activity programme offers the participants a range of exercises and bowls. Whereas both Jim and Pat enjoyed the exercise they were reluctant to try the bowls as they had previous experience of the game and hadn t taken to it back then. However, this time they really enjoyed it, and both of them attribute that change of heart to the friendly atmosphere of the P&P club. Finally they had found an activity that they both could enjoy together. So has been part of the programme changed their lives? Absolutely, they both say in agreement we now play bowls twice a week, are still active members of the Mature Movers club, have joined the local Active Retirement group and I volunteer to assist with the new Mature Movers club in Trim. We need a schedule to keep track of everything we are involved in! That flyer which came through our door was the kick start we needed; it changed our lives for the better. We are now healthier and fitter than we have ever been, and the fact that we are so involved in the community means a lot to us. We have found our place and are really happy in. To assist schools in this regard, Meath LSP has developed a school sports day training pack that consists of a guidebook, training workshop and resource cards. The sports day training involves a practical session and is designed to equip the participant with the knowledge and skills required to plan a safe and fun sports day. The workshop will introduce participants to various activities that can be incorporated into their own day. Training will open to both teachers and parents from primary schools in Meath. All primary schools will be notified of training dates when arranged in the summer term. School Hall Athletics MLSP in a conjunction with Meath Athletics Board will continue the roll out of the school hall athletics programme in This programme is run once weekly over 4 6 weeks targeting children from 3 rd class and up. Expression of interest is sought from schools that have appropriate school/pe halls and can commit to facilitating the programme during school hours. School places on this programme are limited and subject to tutor availability, preference will be given to those schools that have some provisions of indoor athletic equipment. Transition Year Disability Awareness Programme This 4 hour workshop provides participants with an understanding of what the term disability means with an overall aim to provide the students with an understanding of the difficulties faced by individuals who have a disability. The workshop provides two hours of theory followed by a 2 two hour practical session.
