1 Because we re hot. PONEKE PIES GOLDEN OLDIES RUGBY ANNUAL REPORT FOR 2008 After the Pies first ever game RUGBY We planned: we attended the Wellington Region Golden Oldies annual woolsale in February to negotiate our playing schedule, and we joined the Wellington Region Golden Oldies community

We trained hard: we had two permanent coaches: Garry Archer and Perenise Ropeti we had two guest coaches: Toby Robson and Dallas Seymour we opened the pre-season by training at Days Bay we had a

of new drills so we looked like a real rugby team, even on the coldest, darkest windiest winter nights.

2 We trained hard: we had two permanent coaches: Garry Archer and Perenise Ropeti we had two guest coaches: Toby Robson and Dallas Seymour we opened the pre-season by training at Days Bay we had a touch session with our friends the Eastern Magpies at the Polo Ground we upped the intensity by having a training run with the legendary Dallas Seymour, and Coaches Garry and Perenise taught us lots of new drills so we looked like a real rugby team, even on the coldest, darkest windiest winter nights. We played 12 games of rugby against: Wairarapa Millhillians, Stokes Valley Gangsters and Otaki Gazebos at Stokes Valley on 6 April Wainuiomata Wags at Wainuiomata on 20 April Kapiti Gorillas at Fraser Park on 4 May Wairarapa Millhillians at Masterton on 18 May Wags and Millhillians at Waikanae on Anti-Pies ((a combined OBU Dead Antiques and Eastern Magpies team) at Cobham Park on 22 June HOBM Saints and Sinners at The Strand on 17 August Avalon Tanners at Fraser Park on 14 September, and Dead Antiques at the Prince of Wales No 2 on 28 September.

We are exploring possible trips to: a mini-festival in Rarotonga in May 2009, and the Golden Oldies World Festival in Sydney in 2010.

Our match statistics were something like: we scored about 55 tries the Pie Guy scored by the most by one Pie at 13 (in 4 games!

Keith Manch kicked the ball within 30 seconds of the Pies first match, leading to the first penalty for this offence. He was followed in subsequent games by Kevin Jenkins, Perenise Ropeti, and Wayne Tacon, and one broken arm (Wayne Goodall), one dislocated shoulder (Chris Holmes), one concussion (Garry Archer), and numerous damaged ribs, shoulders, elbows, fingers, hamstrings, knees, and toes. Lots of Pies were awarded Player of the Day either by the opposition, or by the Pies. We have: a name: the Poneke Pies a logo reflecting the perfect balance between exercise and nutrition flash polos in Poneke colours flash caps for serious Pies who have played five games or more flash beanies for those cold days Who Ate All the Pies badges a weekly online newsletter called HALF BAKED reports of each match, including a branded team photo and other photos digital video of a number of matches a Weblog at our own Bill Board for games and functions, and a tradition of presenting pies and books about pies to Players of the Day.

We re going to strike a balance between: having fun playing rugby again closely involving family and friends, and sometimes doing bloke-only stuff. We have established structures and systems to ensure the Pies last for 1,000 years: a Pies governance board the Upper Crust four subcommittees: Rugby and Competitions, Marketing and Communications, Hospitality, and Finance and Administration, and we have plans galore for 2009.
