Welcome Well here we are already a number of games into the season, where has this time gone? It is exciting how most clubs at this time of year are at different phases of their development and are looking forward to the rest of the season with anticipation. The Gippsland Coaches Association (GCA) is again looking forward to a big year of football. We have 650 members at this stage of the year and these members will again receive a host of advantages in being a member of our Association. These include accreditation, regular newsletters, the option to use a number of resources which the GCA have available, the option to attend a host of coaching nights and many other value for money activities. There are a number of new coaches in all leagues this season and it was great to see over 170 of these at the recent Level 1 coaches courses held on March 22nd in Sale and March 29 th in Korumburra. We hosted AFL Community Camps with the Richmond Football club in Bairnsdale and Lakes Entrance and the Melbourne Football Club in Leongatha. Both of these events were a huge success and the support and assistance from both clubs and their community teams was outstanding. We have also been busy with AFL visits across the region and have held Superclinic Days in Lakes Entrance, Bairnsdale, Traralgon, Garfield, and Sale/Maffra. There have been over 70 primary schools with 4500 students attend these days with the kids having a great opportunity to interact and learn from AFL stars from North Melbourne, Hawthorn, St. Kilda and Richmond with more planned for June and July with players from the Collingwood and Melbourne football clubs at Wonthaggi/Cowes and Leongatha/Korumburra. Peter Francis and Leigh Brown from Gippsland Power hosted a coaches seminar on behalf of the GCA and it was pleasing to see over 45 coaches from the Central Gippsland JFL attend Gippsland Powers training session and then the coaches seminar which covered the topics of teaching skills and drills and creating and training your game plan. Well here is hoping that all clubs, players and coaches get what they wish for out of this season. As I said earlier every club is at a different phase of their development. There may only be one premiership in each league but your "success" isn't always measured by a Premiership. 2 2014 GCA Coach of the Year awards Senior Coach of the Year Robert Railton Wonthaggi Football Netball Club Rob played his junior football at Wonthaggi and then represented Gippsland Power in the TAC Cup from 1993 as an under 16 player to He was then drafted to the Melbourne FC as a Supplementary List player for season 1996 and began his coaching career almost immediately when he coached the Gippsland Power under 16 & under 18 squads in South Gippsland.Rob has always been a true leader who sets a wonderful example both on and off the field. It is no surprise to see the impact he has had on the Wonthaggi Power Football Club in a very short space of time. His view that long term success can only be achieved from within your own group means that the Wonthaggi Power Football Club will build a strong junior program with the outstanding coaches they have put in place. This will reduce the need to try to recruit players from other clubs. Rob sees the development of all of the clubs coaches as paramount to building a culture of success on and off the field and make the Wonthaggi Power Football Club a place that will attract quality people in all roles.i feel that Rob is an outstanding coach and the success he attains will be a measure of the work, commitment and example he sets for the entire football club to follow. Youth Coach of the Year Stan Grazotis Yarram Football Netball Club Stan is an exceptional communicator ensuring players and officials are well informed both on game day and at training when assistance is needed for drills. He gains acceptance from the players and looks for input from everyone before making a decision. Stan takes a hands on approach at training and will be involved in every drill displaying how it should be done and to the high standard he demands. His ability to teach his players has seen a dramatic improvement in them and even though training can be hard, this makes each session enjoyable for the entire team He has the ability to communicate on many different levels both with the kids and officials. It is this skill that gains most respect from the players and parents involved. He continually looks for methods to gain fulfilment in the young player s careers through technique and skill development. We have a number of assistants involved in the club who don t have a football background, Stan not only gets them but includes then in his thoughts, game plan, match strategies involved at the same time guiding and instructing on some AFL technique. This attitude has seen him build a great support team, not only for his team, but the Yarram Football Club. Photo courtesy of the Yarram Standard Junior Coach of the Year Matt Adams TEDAS JFC Even though the group is under 12 s, we believe as a club Matt has been able to progress their understanding of the game to a point where the players will adapt to the next level, under 14 s with no hesitation. This comes about by the frequent chats utilizing the clubs white board and explaining initially the basics of playing certain positions and their importance, but more importantly the
concept of a team approach. These sessions are interactive where Matt asks players what they would do in certain situations, seeking their understanding what certain positions are required to achieve. Small game plans have been discussed utilizing the concepts of team work, shepparding, following up your kick, and teaching a game plan that is easy for the players to follow, but giving them a structure in preparation for their progression to the under 14. From the start of the year, till now, the players have clearly absorbed this information and progressed dramatically. At the start of the year, Matt held a meeting with the parents explaining his desire to have as many of the parents engaged in the kid s development. He was very keen on establishing relationships with each family so he gets to learn to understand each individual player and what works for them. Through this process, he was able to provide frequent updates as to how the children were progressing. This type of relationship allowed the parents to feel comfortable in talking with Matt and he would be deemed very approachable through this constant approach. Matt is an experienced Senior coach and even though this is his first year coaching a junior team he was able to adapt his senior training and match planning to suit the under 12 age group. Matt played all of his junior football at the TEDAS JFC and as a club we are proud to have many former players returning to us to help grow our club for the future. Female Coach of the Year Dianna Alweyn Warragul Colts JFC Dianna is continually enhancing her knowledge to provide lessons at training, very good at her technique and getting the girls to learn new skills at the same time having a fun and enjoyable experience. Consistently attends every game day and supporting the girls and organizing duties for parents. She is a natural teacher of players who continually provides information to the girls on their positions and where they should be during various parts of the game Dianna has a great ability to communicate, can project her voice to the girls during instruction and provides supporting and firm huddle instructions to motivate the girls during their game. Her confidence has grown substantially since beginning her coaching role last year Dianna as developed the girls in a way where she has found individual roles for players through a rotation system and worked on this to ensure that the girls know their particular task and positions on the field. Auskick Matt Bugeja Yinnar Auskick Centre Matt always communicates extremely well with children and parents. Emphasis is on positives. Plenty of one on one instruction and feedback is provided through the use of parent helpers. He communicates with children at their level, keeping instructions simple, and always asks for feedback from them to ensure that they have understood instructions. He employs excellent use of demonstrations as part of the teaching process. Matt ensures that parents and assistants are equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to assist in the teaching of skills by involving them. He encourages children to develop skills on both sides of the body, and uses logical progressions in skill development activities. He ensures that activities are appropriate for different ages and abilities so as to facilitate self-paced learning. In addition to the lessons from the Auskick manual, he uses simple drills that enable the children to practice skills with minimal distractions. Matt uses grid and Auskick rules matches as an effective means of introducing basic fundamentals of team and positional play to children. He ensures that every player
has an important role to play and feels valued as a team member. Andrew constantly rotates players through various positions. He has the utmost respect of parents and children, which stems from the fact that he always has the concerns and needs of the children as his first priority. Matt always sets a great example to children through his attitude and approach. In addition organisation skills and enthusiasm for the role have endeared him to all involved. 5 Gippsland Power 2015 Gippsland Power have had a very good start to the 2015 TAC Cup season with 4 wins and 2 losses for the season so far. This weekend sees the Power pitted against the top of the ladder North Ballarat Rebels at Ballarat in what will be a stern test for the local boys. We are very proud and pleased to inform you that we've had 12 players selected in the initial Vic Country Under 18 Squad. Christan Buykx-Smith,Tate Marsh (Traralgon) Ben Ainsworth, Ryan Hearn (Morwell) Nash Holmes, Josh Dunkley (Sale) Deven Costigan (Maffra) Sam Skinner (Moe) Tom Papley (Bunyip) Josh Patullo,, Harry McKay (Warragul) Matthew DeBruin (Pakenham) ) All the boys have spent time at a weekend in camp in Melbourne with the rest of the squad before playing a practice match against NSW. 9 of the boys played with only Sam Skinner (illness), Josh Dunkley (back), and Ryan Hearn (shoulder) missing through injury. The boys all performed really well and performed at a very high level. They will now play with us for the next 4 rounds before their first official game vs Vic Metro on May the 24th. A squad for that game will be announced closer to this date. We wish the boys all the best. CLAY SMITH RE-INJURES HIS KNEE Desperately unlucky Western Bulldogs midfielder Clay Smith looks set for another lengthy spell on the sidelines, after seemingly re-injuring his twice-reconstructed right knee. Smith landed awkwardly just near (but not on) the synthetic grass next to the wing boundary, early in the second quarter of the Bulldogs' loss to St Kilda at Etihad Stadium. He appeared to have jarred his knee, and went down the race with club doctor Gary Zimmerman, only to return to the field shortly after, having shown an ability to run both straight and laterally.
But on the stroke of half-time, Smith's troublesome knee looked to buckle as he landed after jumping to contest a marking contest inside 50. The collective mood of the stadium changed immediately as the Dogs' medical staff made their way onto the ground. A number of Smith's teammates as well as Saint Leigh Montagna ran past to give the teary onballer consolatory pats as he was loaded onto the stretcher cart, and he received a standing ovation from the crowd while being transported from the arena. Lachie Hunter was substituted in to replace Smith for the second half. Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge described the incident as "tragic", but was reluctant to expand without knowing for certain what had transpired. "We don't really know the detail and it's probably difficult for me to talk about because it's a pretty emotional incident. It affects everyone around the place." Smith, 21, was playing just his fourth game in 21 months, a result of reconstructions in consecutive seasons. The Bulldogs have already lost star midfielder Tom Liberatore for the season after he tore his ACL during a NAB Challenge game against Richmond at the Whitten Oval. Clay has now had his third knee reconstruction and everybody at Gippsland Power would like to wish Clay well in his recovery. We also look forward to seeing him in action for the Bulldogs again in Herald Sun Country Shield Football Our Marist-Sion College First 18 had an amazing come from behind victory, it s first in 16 years, over Catholic College Sale on Tuesday to be crowned the champion football school of Gippsland & progress to the Semi Finals of the Herald Sun Country Shield. Signs were ominous of another imposing victory for the Sale boys as they skipped away to an early lead & went into half-time with a 5 goal lead as Marist-Sion could only manage a single behind up to half time. The Marist-Sion College players began the 3 rd Quarter with a huge lift in intensity & with a great attack on the ball, they put enormous pressure on the opposition and willed the game their way, slowly but surely. At ¾ time it was still Sale by 3 goals (5 goals to 2) but the Marist-Sion College boys were up & about and could sense the momentum shift as Sale started coughing the ball up under pressure and became undisciplined, giving away silly free kicks and 50m penalties. The last quarter was all Marist-Sion College but scoring in the horrendously difficult conditions made it hard to capitalize. Until goals from Sean Masterson and Nick Mulqueen with 3 minutes to go gave Marist-Sion
College a real sniff of an upset win. Marist-Sion College took the ball forward but a fumbled opportunity resulting in a boundary throw-in made our coaching staff feel our chance was blown. From this stoppage the ball was knocked towards the goal-square where Jimmy Scammell scrambled a kick from the pack to kick the winning goal with 30 seconds remaining. Sam Whibley was outstanding in the ruck, Dylan Wilson and Nick Mulqueen led the charge from the midfield. Tom Wyatt was crucial to the team s win after half-time as a defensive forward on Sale s key play maker from defence. Liam Anderson and Sam Neville were solid as rocks up back. There was a great contribution from all who played, especially in the 2 nd half. Final Scores: Marist-Sion College Catholic College Sale Marist Sion Best- in a great team effort: Sam Whibley, Nick Mulqueen, Dylan Wilson, Tommy Wyatt, Liam Anderson & Sam Neville. Goals: Sam Wyatt, Sam Neville, Nick Mulqueen, Sean Masterson, Jimmy Scammell. Footys Balancing Act - Leigh Brown Gippsland Power Head Coach Each time a coach gets their players together as a group he or she faces many challenges. We all want to get the most out of our players, see them improve and become better players. We all have our different views on the game and like to teach in different ways which is one the great things about our game. We need all of our players to know our game plan and our style of play. In dealing with non professional players especially junior players who have many commitments, including school, local football, school football, TAC football, representative football, work and of course finding time for family and friends. It is becoming increasingly hard to train, prepare to play, teach a game style and structure without overloading and wearing out the players before the big game on the weekend. Gone are the days where players just shower after a game and head for home. Nowadays there is stretching, getting massages, walking in water (pool or beach), hot and cold baths etc. No longer do we just say "run it out at training" when it comes to an injury, nor do we train until we get everything perfectly right - no matter what time we finish before we wrap up training for the night. Of course we don't just turn up on Saturday and play without any knowledge of our game plan and structure for that day. The players preparation for the next game begins as soon as the final siren of the previous game sounds. It's all about recovery, recovery and recovery. As coaches we have had to adjust and really communicate with our fitness staff and medical teams. We have to adjust the players training loads, duration of training and the intensity of training. Some nights we might only get one or two main drills into our training schedule. This really reduces the time we have to teach players the hands-on football skills and structures. It becomes a balancing act of trying to teach the players as much as we can and still keeping them fresh to perform on the weekend. To counter this we find ourselves spending time teaching in a variety of different ways, these include: Using video which is a great way to learn and see the movement of players and structures Walking through set-ups and scenarios out on the ground which is low impact and allows players to get a feel for different positions on the ground (talking through it as they go works well too!) Dividing groups into their divisions, whether it be backs, forwards or midfielders. This may help start discussion as players may start to feel more comfortable in smaller groups
For the coaches who are up with technology and have an ipad, the application 'Coach pad' can be utilized as a teaching device on the move, game day or at training The old fashioned white boards and markers is an option as they get the job done too! There are many more methods to those listed above that have been tried and tested each week at every footy club regardless of the level. Every player learns differently and with limited time together, limited physical training times, finding out what works best for your playing group is one of the biggest challenges faced by a coach. We can find ourselves teaching football in many different and sometimes new ways. There is no right or wrong ways as long as the players are learning, understanding your messages and enjoying their football. Good luck for the rest of the season and happy coaching. Central Gippsland Junior Coaches Seminar with Gippsland Power Over forty-five Central Gippsland Junior coaches attended Gippsland Power s training session on Wednesday 30 April in an effort to educate junior coaches on correctly teaching the basics and provide alternative ideas for the coaches to incorporate into their sessions. This fabulous opportunity also offered an insight into the development and talent pathways that coaches can promote to talented players. Gippsland Power Head Coach, Leigh Brown gave an overview of the evening s session, encouraging all of the coaches to gain as much as they can from observing. The coaches were given a training planner outlining the session they were about to observe from the grandstand. The coaches were all given the opportunity to take photos, film and document the session. It was excellent to see some coaches discussing with one another how the drills could be modified to suit their own teams and how they could implement some of the drills into training sessions. At the conclusion of the training session, Chelsea Caple, newly appointed Football Development Manager at AFL Gippsland then gave an overview of the newly formed AFL Gippsland. For most of the coaches it was great to obtain an understanding about what the VCFL and AFL Victoria, and now more directly AFL Gippsland are doing to help to grow the game and support Clubs and Coaches in the region. Gippsland Power Talent Manager, Peter Francis then provided a thorough overview of the Gippsland Power Programs. It was an invaluable presentation as ultimately the junior coaches in attendance are vital in developing the players that will feed into the program, and it was great reinforcement from their perspective to gain more knowledge and understanding of how important their coaching is. Those in attendance were provided with a light dinner and spent time networking before Peter and Leigh conducted a 45min session on individual skills specifically to juniors. They modified and adapted drills incorporating two, three and four players, with an emphasis on allowing as many touches as possible for junior players.
Former Leigh Brown s message for the evening was not to complicate drills and teach the basics, with an emphasis on keeping each drill short and sharp. It is hoped that this night will be the impetus for future coaching seminars that continues to foster and facilitate a culture of collegiality and networking amongst all Gippsland Coaches Association members.
