1 EAT WELL PLAY WELL Footy, fun and food for busy bodies EAT WELL PLAY WELL Featuring the characters from Mascot Manor LEARNING ACTIVITIES BY NUTRITION AUSTRALIA FOR THE AUSTRALIAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE
2 INTRODUCTION AFL Auskick is a great way to learn new skills and to engage children in physical activity in a fun and safe environment. The Australian Football League, with assistance from Nutrition Australia, has developed Eat Well, Play Well Footy, fun and food for busy bodies to provide primary school-aged children with educational activities that encourage healthy eating patterns. We are concerned with the health and wellbeing of Australia s children and adolescents and hope the activities contained in this booklet driven by the characters from Mascot Manor, the exciting new mascots of the AFL clubs will assist children and their families to develop appropriate physical activity and healthy eating habits. 6 THE HEALTHY EATING PYRAMID The Healthy Eating Pyramid helps us to choose and eat lots of different foods each day. We can mix up these foods to suit our taste. For a healthy body we need to eat a variety of foods each day. We also need to be active. We should be running, walking, playing football with our mates or with mum and dad in the backyard at the park. Eat in small amounts Oil, margarine, reduced-fat spreads, butter, sugar Eat moderately Lean meat, eggs, fish, chicken (without skin), milk, yoghurt, cheese Small amounts of these foods can be added to other foods for extra flavour. All of these foods come from animals. They help us to grow strong and healthy. These foods can be eaten in moderate amounts. Eat most Vegetables, dried peas, beans and lentils, cereals, bread, fruit, nuts All the plant foods are here. They help give us energy and a healthy body. These foods should make up the largest amount of all the foods we eat. Australian Nutrition Foundation Inc TIGER STRIPES DYER You need to eat a variety of foods and be active to have a healthy body. Eating the pyramid way and being active will give me lots of energy, a healthy heart and a healthy body. CLAUDE CURLS CROW
