Welcome to the Everton Wolves Junior Australian Football Club The first thing you need to know is that we do not have a win-at-all-costs attitude. The club has always had junior development and family values as its goals. Our aim is to provide a great football experience for each child so that they, and you, want to come back next year. We also want to make sure the children learn new skills in a safe and supportive environment. It is for this reason we require all coaches to have an appropriate qualification and all coaches and managers to have a blue card. These rules are all part of our obligations in regard to the protection of the rights, interests and wellbeing of children. The Committee has adopted and implemented the AFLBJ Child Protection Policy. The Everton Wolves has been described as a boutique club and we think that is about right: a small club with a big heart family friendly, player friendly and community friendly. A little history Being a member of the Everton Wolves means that you are joining a club that began officially in October 1969, but goes much further back. The club was formed from families from the Golden Valley Football Club, the Oakleigh Football Club and the Mitchelton Football Club, all of which no longer exist. Golden Valley amalgamated with the Wolves in Although the Wolf has always been the club emblem, originally the club had a blue jersey with a red sash. With the amalgamation, the club s colours changed to adopt the gold from Golden Valley in place of the red. Interestingly, in those days the club also boasted cricket, softball and netball teams. The club s official name is the Everton Districts Sporting Club Inc because of the multi-sport history and today manages the Everton Wolves Junior Australian Football Club and leases the ground to the Mayne Australian Football Club (seniors) and the Ashgrove Cricket Club. Although the club has been through some tough times (reduced to just two teams in 1990) the dedication of parents have kept the club going. The Committee especially wants to recognise the very hard work and years of service to two of our life members, Marg and Steve Millar, without whom we would not be here today in review In 2014 we continued to have growing junior numbers with a total of 79 players. We fielded 1xU6, 3xU8, 1xU10 and 1xU11 teams. Unfortunately our youth numbers were a little down on previous years but this was also a problem for many clubs across the whole of Brisbane. We had a total of 49 youth playing members. Our U13 team played in the Division 1 / 2 competition, and working with other clubs we also formed an U14 Everton/Kenmore team and an U16 Everton/Zillmere team. They were both very competitive in their respected divisions. The U16 Everton/Zillmere team were the Division 3 runners-up. What to expect in 2015 In 2015 we expect our junior numbers to continue to rises and hope to field teams in all age groups. We also expect our youth numbers to recover and are planning on fielding teams in each of the U12, U14, U15 and the new U17 age groups. We also plan on having an all Girls U13 and U15 team. The Official Sign-on dates for 2015 are the 7 th and 8 th Feb between 10am and 2pm at the Den. We do accept sign-on prior to these dates online (usually from Dec) and we also accept sign-on after these dates (normally well into June). Training for our Youth Teams normally starts the week after sign-on and for junior teams after the Easter Holidays. Also expect fun social events with a small amount of fundraising. The first event will be the annual Meet the Pack Day 1 st March 2015 at 9am followed by our AGM at 10am. We encourage all to attend. A Calendar of Events Notice Board is kept up to date on our website Fees Our club does not have the benefit of a licensed bar or poker machines to raise revenue. Registration fees are based on the costs to put a player on the field. Our fee schedule can be found on our website. It should be remembered that our one-off fee covers the entire season and includes things like photos, awards at the end of the year, insurance and registration. There are no compulsory weekly fees! If you can t pay your full fees at sign-one please arrange to see the Treasurer. The AFLBJ rules state that a player cannot play any game until the fees have been paid. 3

Child Protection at Everton EDSC is committed to the rights, interests and wellbeing of children and has adopted the risk management strategy of the AFL Brisbane Juniors. The strategy includes various policies and procedures aimed to ensure that children who participate in the sport of AFL do so in a safe, respectful environment. For example, all coaches, managers, and first aid officers are required to hold a blue card, and there are codes of conduct for players, coaches and parents. A copy of the EDSC Child Protection Policy is available upon request. Kids First Today s parents have an important role in the delivery and support of sporting activities for their own and other children. With it comes a clear responsibility to act in a constructive and encouraging manner at all times. Barracking and wanting your child to perform well is human nature, but it is critical that this should be done in a responsible manner avoiding the ugly parent syndrome at all times. The basic principles of AFL Kids First are to remind parents that: sport for children is a vital part of their growing up; children like to win, but more importantly, they want to have fun; parents need to set the right example at the sports ground, not just at home; parents should be proud of their child s efforts irrespective of the result; and sport is important for children s self esteem. The club s Kids First night will occur during a training night early in the season. The continued growth and health of the game depends on junior programs and matches being conducted in a positive, encouraging and fun environment. AFL Kids First provides guidance for achieving this objective. See you there! Parents Code of Conduct At sign on, you would have signed a registration form that also asks you and / or on behalf of, your child to follow a code of conduct. In a nutshell, you are asked to: Encourage children to always participate according to the rules; Never ridicule or yell at a child for making a mistake or if the team loses a game; Remember that children learn best by example - applaud good play by BOTH teams; Support all efforts to remove verbal and physical abuse from sporting activities; Recognise the value and importance of volunteer coaches; Remember that children play organised sports for fun. They are not playing for the entertainment of the spectators, nor are they miniature professionals; Condemn the use of violence in any form, be it by spectators, coaches, officials or players; Encourage players to follow the officials decisions; and Demonstrate appropriate social behaviour by not using foul language, harassing players, coaches or officials. If you disagree with an official, raise the issue through the appropriate channels rather than questioning the official s judgment and honesty in public. Details of other codes of behaviour (Administration/Officials, Players and Coaches) can be found at Appendix A. Alcohol Smoking Policy The purpose of the AFL Queensland s Smoking and Alcohol policies are to provide all members and visitors with a safe, healthy and challenging sports environment. This enables all participants to achieve their sporting best and, spectators, officials, coaches and administrators to enjoy a Smoke Free environment. The Everton home ground does not usually have a Licensed Area and, consequently, no alcohol is to be consumed within the areas known as the home ground and/or car park. The Everton club and oval surrounds, in accordance with the policy, have been designated as a Smoke Free environment. Members and guests needing to smoke must only do so in the designated car park. Full details of both policies can be found at Appendix B. 4

Communication at the Club Face to Face - Obviously this is always our first preference. The Committee is always open to feedback and ideas. We are especially open to offers to help, no matter how small the contribution might be. evertonjuniors@aflbj.com for anything at all related to club matters you will get a very quick response. Website - This site is kept up to date with all the latest news and information. It contains a wealth of information you may find useful. There are reports and stories of club events, history, acknowledgement of player milestones and much more. Newsletter - The main communication tool at the Wolves is The Howler, a newsletter that is distributed via each week. If you happen to miss your copy, it is also available on the club website. The newsletter will give you information of upcoming events, the draw for the weekend coming up, reports from the previous games and interesting snippets on a range of footy topics. Team Managers - Although you are encouraged to introduce yourself to the Committee and are always welcome to discuss any ideas or concerns you may have at any time, at the Wolves we often ask Team Managers to be the face-to-face conduit of information. We try to keep Managers informed so they can keep you informed, but also ask them to convey your wishes to the Committee. Suggestion Box - If you feel the need to give a suggestion in writing, a blue communication box is on the counter of the club office at all training nights and club game days. The box is checked regularly and, if your name is included, the Committee will reply directly to you. Player Registration and Clearances All players must be registered to play. For insurance reasons, no player can train or play football unless they are registered. If you signed a registration form at sign on you have done all you need to do, other than pay the fees of course. If your child has played with another club and is playing Youth Football, a clearance may be required see your Team Manager or the Registrar if you are not sure. If your child is a new player who joins the team during the season you still need to be properly registered. Training Nights and Match Days Training nights are Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5.15pm to 6.30pm for Youth Teams and Thursdays only for Junior Teams from 5.15pm to 6.30pm (some coaches may vary the times a little as the season commences). Most junior matches are held on Saturdays starting with U6 at about 9.00 am (though sometimes earlier), Youth games are mostly held on Sundays. Occasionally, some games are played on Friday nights. Usually, there is a break for school holidays but this varies for Junior and Youth Football. Fixture The draw for the season is prepared by the AFL Brisbane Juniors following a series of grading games. Usually, a draft draw is available immediately prior to the commencement of the first fixture but the full draw may not be available until several weeks into the season. This is because the availability of some teams and some grounds can change. A further note of warning: it is not unusual for fixtures to change during the season for a variety of reasons. Some teams pull out of the competition and the fixture has to be re-drawn. Sometimes, grounds are deemed unsafe to play on and the fixture has to be altered to allow for changes in time and venue for some matches. The club will try to let you know when this occurs on training nights, but it is a good idea to regularly check for changes to your team s fixture by looking at our website Wet Weather Australian Football is still played in wet weather unless the ground is unplayable or extreme weather conditions make it unsafe for the game to proceed. If this occurs (and we know in advance), the Team Manager will be responsible for contacting all families to let them know. Please assume games are on unless you are informed otherwise. When in doubt please contact your Team Manager before deciding not to play as the weather can vary greatly across grounds. 5

Team Selection Our policy is simple maximum participation. We ask every Coach to make sure every player gets the opportunity to spend as much time on the field as possible. Although in reality this may translate to equitable rather than equal, we do not support continually playing the most talented players at the expense of players still developing or learning the game. Where there is more than one team in an age group we do not support the most talented players being placed in one team. If this occurs it is through accident, not design. We recognise that many players come to the club to be with their friends. Requests for players to be in the same team will be honoured where possible, however, when numbers dictate otherwise this is not always possible. It is helpful if we know such requests as soon as possible and before team lists are finalised (usually after the first week or two of official training). Unable to Play We understand that players and parents / carers have busy lives and at times have conflicting commitments. Where these events are known in advance we ask that you let your Coach or Team Manager know as early as possible. Each year long weekends and the school holidays presents a challenge for Coaches to field a team. If the draw shows that there are games during long weekends and on the first weekend of the mid-year holidays. It would be very helpful, if it was possible for you to make any holiday arrangements to begin after the fixture that weekend. NAB Auskick NAB Auskick is the Australian Football League s key introductory program for primary school-aged boys and girls and their families. Through our WEEKLY COACHING PROGRAM you ll learn the skills of the game through appropriately modified activities and rules, play football in a fun and safe environment and make plenty of new friends too! The involvement of parents is an integral component of the success of the program, so get out of the car and get involved. The Auskick Coordinator will provide all the help and advice you need. You don t need to have a background in the game, just the willingness to spend more time with your children, learn new skills, get active and make new friends. Registration and payment must be made through the Auskick website Awards Each team is encouraged to have low-key awards at the end of each game that recognise good codes of conduct on and off the field, good contributions to the team and/or good play on the day. These awards are not meant to continually recognise the most skilled players. At the end of the year, all Junior players (non-competitive teams) receive an award to recognise their contribution at training and in games but no individual awards are given. The Youth Football teams also receive a recognition award but also have the opportunity to receive one or more of the individual awards on offer. We also recognise playing milestones as they occur (if we can) during the season and at the awards night. The club keeps records of all of the games played and will inform Team Managers of 50 game, 100 game milestones in advance. Player Details It is important that parents keep their contact details up to date. When registering or re-registering please make sure your address is correct as this is a vital communication tool. The club also needs to keep annual updated records of player medical details in case of an emergency. Your Team Manager will hand out these forms prior to the first game. Please fill them out and return them to your Team Manager as soon as possible. They will be kept in the Team Manager s folder for easy access in an emergency. 6

Insurance You and your child are covered by the insurance paid as part of your fees. Yes, not only is your child covered for injury at training and at games but you are also covered as well. The Association has a public liability cover and a Sports Injury and Legal Liability Insurance Policy for all players and participants. Of course, there are limitations and conditions apply. If you require more details you can ask the President or contact the AFLBJ directly. Uniform All players are provided with a jersey for each game. Parents are responsible for the purchase of compulsory team shorts and team socks as well the runners/boots and any protective equipment. Mouthguards are not compulsory but we encourage all players to wear them. Uniforms are available for purchase at the club. Each player will be provided with club polo after their fees have been paid. Polo s are replaced every second year of membership. We ask players to wear their club polo to each game and to all official club events. Volunteering Everton Juniors have a proud tradition of parents stepping up to volunteer for tasks that ensure the success and viability of the club. Your team manager will ask for your help to take a turn at performing various tasks. We understand that some parents work on weekends or have other children with weekend sporting commitments that make availability difficult. However, it is clearly unfair if all of the work is left to just a few parents, so please try to help if you can in what ever way you can. There are many team jobs that have to be done on match days and it is simply impossible, let alone clearly unfair, for the team manager to do all of them. With the exception of canteen duties, parents who do these jobs still get to watch and interact with their children for the whole game. In any event, the AFL Brisbane Juniors clearly sets out what is expected from these team helpers on match days to ensure the orderly conduct of the game. The Club is fined if AFLBJ expectations are not met and fines are an avoidable waste of hard earned cash. All teams need: 2 parents to help out in the canteen for the duration of the game (home games only); A ground marshal (home games only); A qualified first aid attendant and/or an accredited trainer (home games only); A goal umpire; A time keeper (home games only) ; A parent to collect and wash the players jumpers and return them to the team manager before the next match; A parent to collect and refill the team water bottles; and A parent to supply oranges for the team at half time (it is against the club nutrition policy to provide lollies to players). Youth Football (Under 12 to Under 16) also need: A Runner - must be 14 years or over to hold this position; Up to 4 Water Carriers U/12: must be 12 years or over to hold this position, U14 & U16: must be 14 years or over to hold this position; A goal umpire who must be 16 years or older to hold this position; A boundary umpire who must be 16 years or older to hold this position; and A scoreboard attendant (home games only). With the exception of the qualified first aid attendant and/or accredited trainer, none of these jobs require any special abilities, previous experience or qualifications. Your Team Manager will provide some roles (e.g. Ground Marshal) with a list of instructions. 7

First Aid and Trainer Volunteers Each team is required to have a First Aid Officer. If you already have a current First Aid (or equivalent) qualification and are willing to help in this role during the season, please let your team manager know. Under AFLBJ Juniors rules, the home team is responsible for supplying a qualified first aid attendant for the duration of the game. A game will not commence under any circumstances if there is no Qualified First Aid Attendant available, and the Central Umpire will declare the game a forfeit. Furthermore, the home club will be fined $100. Under AFLBJ rules, a First Aid Attendant must have one of the following qualifications: Nurse Sports Trainer St Johns Officers St John Ambulance Certificate Holder Ambulance Officer Sports Trainer Certificate Holder Doctor Basic First Aid Certificate (Minimum) AFLBJ Youth Teams (Under 12 to Under 16 inclusive) are permitted to have: an accredited Trainer as well as a First Aid Attendant or an Accredited Trainer who will also do the job of First Aid Attendant Under AFLBJ rules, an Accredited Trainer must have one of the following qualifications: Nurse Doctor Sports Trainer Certificate Holder St John Ambulance Certificate Holder Basic First Aid Certificate (Minimum) The club will provide a Basic First Aid Certificate Course prior to the commencement of the season FREE OF CHARGE! See the club calendar for dates. Fundraising The Everton Wolves Junior Australian Football Club cannot exist without the support of players parents, fundraising and sponsorships. The strong support of parents ensures that the club continues to maintain membership fees as low as possible. The one-off fee parents pay is subsidised as much as possible by fundraising (including the canteen, social evenings and raffles) and sponsors though it should be noted the funds raised are also used for all of the bills the club gets. It usually costs in the vicinity of $80,000 + to run the club each year. The Club will draw up a roster to ensure each team helps out, for example, you will probably be asked to staff the Canteen on one training night during the year and the team will be asked to provide canteen assistance at each home game. The Manager will let you know when it is your turn. The ultimate aim of the Club is to secure a number of sponsors. Some parents may operate their own business and wish to sponsor your team or there may be a group of parents who wish to share in the cost of team sponsorship. If you can sponsor the club in cash or in kind please see one of the Committee to discuss opportunities. The Everton Wolves JAFC end of season raffle is an important fundraiser that the Club runs each year. This year you will be given the option to purchase your book of raffle tickets at the start of the season with your fees. For those who choose not to prepay for their tickets your Team Managers will distribute your tickets later in the season. We encourage families to sell as many books as possible. If you don t want to participate you don t have to but all books need to be accounted for and returned. The Club s also holds various social fundraisers each season. Although the emphasis is on the social reasons, we try to raise some funds. For example, each year we hold a Trivia Night. Every team is encouraged to support this event by booking at least one table. The Committee hold several meetings to plan these evenings so if you are interested or have some great ideas for any fundraising activities please let the committee know. 8

Team Photos During the season, a training night or game day will be set aside for the taking of team photos. When the Date is confirmed, the information will be posted on the website, put in the newsletter and passed onto the Team Manager so they can notify you in plenty of time. Every player receives a team photo at the end-of-year celebration day so it is important that they attend. The photo cost is included in your sign-on fee. Please note that some players get the opportunity to play for other teams either in the same age group or in another age division. If this occurs five or more times for the same team, the player is invited to be in that team s photo as well. Other Photography of Children It is up to each club to establish its own guidelines on taking photographs and video footage. Although it is possible some people may visit sporting events to take inappropriate photographs and video footage of children, the EDSC recognises parents, guardians and other family members often wish to record the joy of their children participating. Consequently, the EDSC does not prevent parents, other family members and guardians from taking images of games in which their child is participating and will authorise people to take images of games and events from time to time for promotional purposes. Unless informed otherwise, the EDSC will assume parents permit images and the name of their child/ren to be used. The Media Exclusion Form (Appendix C) recognises that there may be a number of reasons why parents / guardians do not wish player images to be recorded. Should you not wish your child s image to be used, please give the signed form to your Manager, a Committee member or place it in the blue Communication Box in the office. For people other than parents / guardians / authorised personnel, the EDSC requires: that the person taking the photograph or video footage be identified that the person taking the photograph or video footage seek permission of an appropriate official before doing so that the person be made aware of the club s policy in relation to taking photographs or video footage of children Any member of the Wolves community who believes inappropriate photography may be occurring should report it immediately to the Team Manager or the Ground Marshall immediately. End of Season At the end of the season many teams have their own break-up event. There is also an official Junior Trophy Presentation and an official Youth Trophy Presentation that teams are expected to attend. The dates and details of these events will be posted on the club website and advertised in the club newsletter. 9

Appendix B Smoke & Alcohol Free Policy AFL Football demands a high level of aerobic fitness and endurance. Smoking & drinking seriously impairs a player s ability to run out four quarters and for any junior player who aspires making it into the AFL, smoking & drinking is definitely out.
