1 Sunday 28 June 11 am Children s Art Competition For details see opposite page Opening of Winster Wakes and Crowning of the Carnival Queen outside the Market House by Ken Marshall. Ken was born in Winster 85 years ago and has lived in the village all his life. He attended our village school and when he left at 14 years of age he went to help Gladys Mosley run her grocery business due to her husband being in the forces. Ken remained working there until he joined the RAF in After the war he was manager of a speciality grocery shop in Bakewell for 30 years. He was also a Morris dancer in his teens. Afterwards Parade along Main Street to St John the Baptist Church led by the Ashbourne Town Band. All village groups are welcome to join the parade. 3 pm Wakes Service in Church for all denominations. Afterwards teas and a short concert by the Ashbourne Town Band at the Burton Institute. Donations of cakes and sandwiches would be greatly appreciated between 11am to 12 noon at the Burton Institute. 6 pm Car Treasure Hunt, starts 6pm onwards from The Miners Standard. Entry 4 per person, 2.50 per child under 14, to include pie and pea supper. Vegetarian option available. Prize for the winning car. More information from Anthea (650480). Rosettes for dog with waggiest tail, dog with best trick, cat with biggest grin, rabbit with the best ears, cutest hamster or guinea pig, most unusual pet. Cup for best in show. No need to book just turn up and you ll be organised into teams on the night. This is a non-contact sport. You don t have to be super-fit, energetic, or know the rules of the game just prepared to have some exercise and some fun. Wear trainers or similar shoes. Come along and see what it s all about. 3 Tuesday 30 June 11 am Winster Wakes Golf Tournament at Matlock Golf Club. 11am onwards coffee, bacon butty. 12 noon first tee time pm two course dinner. Fee 38, paid in advance. 4 Wednesday 1 July 6 pm Fun Rounders. All you have to do is turn up on Winster Playing Field, next to the school, in fancy dress if you can. You ll be organised into teams and the fun will begin. Suitable for males and females, young and old. Organisers: Mandy Marsden, Lisa Simpson, Irene Webster and Kerry Wigley. 8pm Wakes Music Night: DaleDiva let us entertain you! Since DaleDiva was formed seven years ago they ve always been known as a group of ordinary women doing extraordinary things. They are an a-cappella chorus of seventy women from Derbyshire and are mums, daughters, grandmothers, students, teachers, nurses you name it. They love to sing anything from pop hits to show tunes and classics, and work hard to improve and share their wonderful hobby with their audiences. In the few years since they began they ve won numerous medals on the national competition stage, performed as part of the BBC s Last Choir Standing and Children in Need appeal, and were invited to take part in Radio 3 s Choir of the Year. They also won Channel 5 s Don t Stop Believing, a search to find Britain s best show choir. Having won at the National Convention last May, they are going for gold at the World Championships in Las Vegas in October, singing against the best choruses in the world on the famous MGM Grand Stage. This is DaleDiva s second appearance at Winster Wakes. It will be the full chorus, but tailored to fit into the Burton Institute. This is one of a packed programme of performances and fundraising events to help them get Vegas. 6 Friday 3 July 5 pm Duck Hunt for children. Starts outside the Bowling Green. Find the yellow ducks hidden around Winster. Separate categories for all age groups. Entry: 50p per child. No advance booking needed - just bring a pencil and turn up. Organiser: Andy Clapham (650934) If it is very wet, this event will not take place. 7.30pm Winster Family Night - Winster's Annual Talent Show. Presented by Phyllis Mason and Kerry Wigley. If you can do a turn please contact Phyllis (650241). The show will be in marquee at The Playing Fields. FOR THIS YEAR ONLY THIS WILL BE A FAMILY EVENING, WITH CONTRIBUTIONS FROM OUR ITALIAN VISITORS. NEXT YEAR BACK TO THE USUAL WINSTER NIGHT. When the supply of volunteers runs dry, Winster Night will cease to be. So, please, don t be shy. Do your bit, whatever your age! There will be a barbecue and a licensed bar. Bar open from 7pm. Since so many people are both performers and members of the audience, we ask all performers and organisers to make a contribution at the door. 7 Saturday 4 July - Wakes Day No parking on Main Street on Wakes Day. Please use the car parks and the common. Thank you. Street Stalls on Main Street. Contact Mandy Marsden (650181). Stalls are 15 ( 10 for Winster residents). Provide your own tables and gazebos (if required) Fancy Dress at Leacroft with cash prizes for first, second and third. Entry is free - just turn up on the day, then help to collect along Main Street during the parade. You can only enter one category.
