I simply want to congratulate Dr Sara Shinton and Andrew Morris for pulling together what proposes to be a fantastic Bang Goes The Borders Science Festival this Saturday. Their hard work deserves a fabulous turnout which I am sure they will achieve. School is in full flow and for match reports and various updates on outings please scan the website. Enjoy your weekend. ROALD DAHL DAY Upper Transition were a rather scruffy looking bunch last Friday as they came into school in some interesting uniform combinations, some of them even with their clothes on inside out and back to front! We were in fact celebrating Roald Dahl Day, held each year on the author s birthday, 13 th September. We have had fun making our Roly Poly Birds, playing tricks, giving treats and reading books and learnt some interesting facts about Roald Dahl too. 2 PRE-PREP MACMILLAN COFFEE MORNING It is that time of year again when Pre-Prep start baking with Chef ready for our Macmillan Coffee Morning. Please join us for coffee and simple homemade cakes on Thursday morning (26 th September) between 8:45am and 9:45am in Lower Transition and Upper Transition classrooms and help us support Macmillan s world s biggest coffee morning. Let s see if we can beat last year s total of 233! Thank you and we look forward to seeing you. Miss Renwick, Miss Wight and Mrs Currie DINARD TRIP RETURNS! I am pleased to report that our 15th St Mary's French Trip to Dinard has been successfully completed after an exciting week in France. A wide variety of activities and challenges were tackled with good humour and great enthusiasm from our new Form 8. They have worked hard learning the perfect tense in French and also practising their conversational language with the members of the community at the Maison St François with some very entertaining results! Classroom sessions every evening provided opportunities for discussion and further language preparation. We covered many miles on foot, travelled to St Malo on the Bus de Mer, spent our very last centime at the market, soaked up the architecture in Dinan, captured the local atmosphere in our art pads, marvelled at the Rance Barrage tidal power station and experienced Sunday morning Mass at the chapel in the Maison. There was also time to relax with daily swims in the sea, much sampling of pâtisseries and glaces and dinner at a crêperie in town. Mr Mill's challenges were tremendous fun and I do not think that I will forget his aerobics in the tidal pool in St Malo nor will the population of St Malo!! Thank you Mr Mill for your energy and enthusiasm this week! I would have to agree with Fergus Burn when he described Mrs Hardie as a wonderful "Right Hand Man" and I cannot thank her enough for her support and hard work during the trip as well as her excellent guided tour in the Eglise St Malo and also for organising what most pupils would agree was the most entertaining challenge of the week. Thank you Mrs Hardie for helping to make this a very special trip for one and all and also for returning in one piece!! I will soon be organising a slide show for Form 8 parents and pupils (and any Form 7 parents who might like to find out more about the trip) - watch this space for more information. 5 MUSIC AND DRAMA DEPARTMENT Production Rehearsal Dates There will be full cast rehearsals on the following dates in the Lent term. Full attendance is politely requested. Middle School (Forms 3, 4 and 5): Saturday January 18 th 10am 4pm. Upper School (Forms 6, 7 and 8): Saturday March 8 th 10am 4pm. Many thanks in advance, Miss McRae. Auditions Auditions for the Senior Show (Forms 6, 7 and 8) will take place on Tuesday October 1 st between 4.00pm and 5.30pm please note the later pick-up time of 5.30pm. Junior Show auditions (Forms 3, 4 and 5) will take place on Thursday October 3 rd during the school day. Last Monster in Scotland DVD DVD s are now available for those who have placed an order. If you have not already done so, please leave payment of 5 at the school office as soon as possible. Orders can still be placed please let Ms Birdsall or myself know should you wish to place an order. Jedforest Instrumental Band Jedforest Instrumental Band will be holding their Autumn concert in Jedburgh Town Hall tomorrow evening, Sat 21 st, at 7.30pm. MARY S DO NOT READ ANY FURTHER IF YOU ARE A PRUDE Fifty Shades Of Stewart Tuesday 8 th October Time to get your ruffs out for our roaring tumble through the life of Mary Queen of Scots. International TV star and social historian Lesley Smith is gracing our portals to take us through the ups and Down of the famous Queen. Ms Smith the resident historian on television blockbuster "MOST HAUNTED LIVE" has a particular interest in the history of reproduction (know what I mean?).she will be letting us into some bawdy secrets about the enigmatic Scottish Monarch. So book early to avoid losing your head, by ing friarshaw@btinternet.com. We need to know numbers for goblet and victual activities... 5

6 Darnley sausages need to be ordered in advance in these times of austerity. I would draw your attention to the fact that the event is not suitable for the under 16s, those who shock easily, or those who are of a nervous disposition. Tell all your friends and bring them along, the event is free but donations will be welcomed by the wenches at the door and the odd highwayman. It promises to be an hilarious event and is the last hurrah for our outgoing charity the Borders children's charity who support young people in our community in distress and poverty. It really is a fantastic local organisation directly benefitting children in need. Dress optional but you can go RUFF if it takes your fancy. Winter market THE place to purchase all those Christmas presents for the stroppy God-daughter, great aunty Madge and your darling mother in law (sadly no ear defenders just yet). Don't buy a thing until you visit us. The market will take place in the Morrison Hall on Saturday 9 th November. If you are interested in taking a stall contact retail supremo and taste policewoman... Mrs de Gier. Coven activities I mentioned last week the departure of dear Witch Crawford but failed to mention two new arrivals on the committee. We are delighted to be joined by Jane Oliver ad Rachel Cross. Mr Bell is busy with the latest orders for broomsticks. It would appear our charismatic new additions require no tuition in the art of flying. I failed to mention too, that a prominent member has been elevated to the position of Vice Chair and is in some considerable pain! The date of our next meeting is Thursday 10 th October in the dining room at 8.30am. All welcome. There will be no further elevations so no need to worry. Fiona Nisbet MACMILLAN CANCER SUPPORT COFFEE MORNING I will be running a coffee morning in support of Macmillan Cancer on Friday, 27th September 2013 at Kirklands, Ancrum, TD8 6UJ, from 9.30am-12noon.
