6 3. Recruitment Many mediums are used to recruit members to DUCAC Sport Clubs. Students, Graduates and Staff are entitled to join DUCAC and Sport Clubs at Trinity. Freshers Week This is the main recruitment drive for Sport Clubs where students set up stands in Front Square and organise taster sessions during the first couple of weeks of term. Sport Clubs are also publicised at the Orientation Talks which take place throughout the week in the Ed Burke Theatre. Schools and Clubs DUCAC targets 2 nd Level Schools and Sport Clubs around the country to encourage sports students to come to Trinity College to compete with Trinity Sport Clubs. The Gaelic Development Officer targets County Minor Teams and Development Squads. He attends training sessions and matches and meets players to speak about GAA at Trinity College. Students within the GAA Clubs visit their old schools with the GAA Development officer. TAP (Trinity Access Program) Orientation Catríona Kennedy was asked to present again this year to incoming Trinity Access Programme Students during their orientation week to encourage and support their transition in to Trinity College and to promote active involvement in DUCAC Sports Clubs. Trinity College Dublin Open Day During the Trinity College Open Day held in December 2013, a number of clubs presented to potential students. These included the DU Football, GAA, Boat and Hockey Clubs. DUCAC also had a stand during Open Day in the Arts Building and provided two presentations in conjunction with CSC and the SU. Global Relations International Students Refreshers Event DUCAC, in conjunction with the Global Relations Office, took part in an initiative aimed at encouraging international students to get involved in the sports clubs and societies. Sports clubs and societies were invited to the new Global Room, located in the Hamilton Building beside the new Academic Registry Office, to chat with Erasmus and visiting international students about sport, to answer questions and to sign up potential new members. Turnout was steady but small. DUCAC hopes to build on this to make it a larger inclusive event in P a g e

7 4. Courses and workshops DUCAC Annual Report A number of courses and workshops were held for Club Officers to support them in their roles. These workshops are very beneficial to the volunteer Club Officers, creating opportunities for outside the classroom learning. Skills such as communication, leadership and team building are lifelong skills necessary for the development of the student body, thereby increasing the professionalism of sport clubs. It is also a chance for students to work with other volunteers and to expand their networks. Two Captains and Treasurers Workshops were held in the Sun Room in the Pavilion. The Captains Workshops were held during the first week of term. These informed the incoming Captains of DUCAC s role, Captains roles, Alumni Engagement, Volunteering, and Administration and Leadership skills required. The Treasurers Workshops were held during the second week of term and informed incoming Treasurers of the procedures for claiming allocations and offered advice on budgeting, fundraising and sponsorship. All Treasurers must complete an annual budget at the start of the academic year and manage their allocations throughout the year, giving them much needed budgeting skills required in every area of their futures. DUCAC sent four students to the 2 nd Student Sport Ireland Student Networking Event which took place at Google, Portlaoise in October. The event covered areas such as Event Management and Fundraising which are vital for the continuance of Trinity Sport Clubs. DUCAC arranged a First Aid Training Course, which was well supported by Sport Club personnel. This included students and coaching staff. This is an intensive course which requires a commitment of three hours for five evening sessions. Only those completing the whole course successfully get first aid certification. Many of our Sport Clubs provide additional courses for their members including grading for martial arts clubs and practical diving instructors and open water instructors courses for the Sub-Aqua Club. This year the GAA Development Officer offered GAA members coaching courses which included fundamental skills and referee skills along with sport-specific first aid. 8 5. Research DUCAC is currently supporting the Student Sport Ireland national research project. This research project s aim is to examine participation of third-level students on the island of Ireland in sport, physical activity and related matters. The project has been awarded to a joint partnership consisting of experienced researchers from Dublin City University, University of Limerick, University of Ulster and Waterford IT. The decision to award the contract worth up to 120,000 was taken by Student Sport Ireland following a rigorous examination and assessment of all the tenders received in advance of the 30 th October, 2013 deadline. The joint partnership includes researchers with extensive experience and expertise in working in the third-level education sector, with specific expertise in undertaking research in exercise and physical activity. The research team will have a management committee of six people, consisting of Professor Marie Murphy from the University of Ulster, Dr Catherine Woods from Dublin City University, Dr Ciarán Mac Donncha from the University of Limerick, Dr Niamh Murphy from Waterford Institute of Technology, Professor Alan Nevill from the University of Wolverhampton and Kyle Ferguson from the University of Ulster. Prof Murphy will be the research principal with Dr Mac Donnacha, Dr Murphy and Dr Woods as coinvestigators. The research team has a record of collecting and analysing data in order to create an evidence base to inform policy, development and practical implementations with a range of stakeholders. Dr Woods, Prof Murphy, Dr Murphy and Dr Mac Donncha were appointed as academic experts on the National Physical Activity Steering group for the past 4 years and wrote the physical activity guidelines and physical activity plan for Ireland. The group is now represented by Dr Woods on the Special Action Group on Obesity, which directs national obesity related policy in government and currently advises Healthy Ireland on the final version of Ireland s first national physical activity plan as part of the Health and Wellbeing Framework Prof Murphy, Dr Murphy and Dr Woods are currently in receipt of CARDI funding to analyse data on the national longitudinal study of aging (TILDA), and are also collaborating on producing Ireland s first national physical activity report card. Additionally, these researchers are active at steering group and working group levels in the European Health Enhancing Physical Activity Network, which is supported by the World Health Organisation. The Third Level Research study, which is the first of its kind undertaken in Ireland, has been made possible through significant funding contributions from Student Sport Ireland s member institutions, the Irish Sports Council and Sport Northern Ireland. ISC and SNI representatives are actively involved in the management and oversight of the research study. Detailed planning and preparations for the study commenced in January The collation and analysing of data will be undertaken throughout 2014 and early 2015, with the study s final report expected to be ready for publication in mid P a g e

Whether this programme can continue with the imminent demolition of the Luce Hall remains an imponderable. Students on the Certificate in Contemporary Living (CCL) Course at the National Institute for Intellectual Disabilities attended weekly classes at the Trinity Sports Centre from the beginning of the Michaelmas Term These sessions involved contributions from DUCAC Clubs as well as the Sports Centre staff. This development was made possible by an Equality Fund Project Supporting students with intellectual disabilities to become credited sports coaches. Front row: Sandra Roche, Simon Rooney, Redvers Skelton, Elaine Reddy, Kyle O Sullivan. The Redvers Skelton Three Weapons Trophy A reception in honour of Redvers Skelton, DUFC Hon President , was held in The Pavilion on Saturday 15 th March. DUFC honoured Redvers for all the work he had done for the Club. During his presidency Redvers helped the Club in many different ways. He coached beginners whenever possible and sponsored individuals so they could attend fencing training courses/competitions both in Ireland and abroad. He helped to fund many trophies and events and accompanied the Club on many trips both within Ireland and abroad. He encouraged all fencers to do their best. He represented the true essence of good sportsmanship. Redvers Skelton was instrumental in founding the Patrick Duffy Memorial Épée competition in 1988 which has since gone from strength to strength. When he retired, he was elected a Knight of the Campanile in recognition of his outstanding sporting contributions. Redvers Skelton, who was accompanied by his wife, Kathy, gave a moving speech, touching on the Club s strong tradition, the success achieved during his tenure, and his pride at being involved with a club such as DUFC. To honour Redvers the Redvers Skelton Three Weapons Trophies were designed by and presented to the Club by a former Captain, Geraldine Flynn ( ). Since the Intervarsities are such a significant event in the Club s fencing year, it was fitting that these trophies be presented to the best performing individual male and female fencers from all three weapons at the Intervarsities. He presented the perpetual trophy to the first recipient of the Best Male Fencer in Three Weapons Maxton Milner (DUFC). The event was also attended by Redvers s daughter, Amanda and her family along with alumni of DUFC and former coaches, Tony Quinn and Shirley Duffy. There was a great turnout from DUFC along with King s College London and UCD. Professor Cyril Smyth (Chairman, DUCAC) was also present and awarded the Trinity Alumni Sports Clubs Hall of Fame Trophy to DU Fencing Club for The current Club Captain, Maxton Milner, accepted the trophy on behalf of the teams which had won the Intervarsities 13 consecutive times between 1979 and 1991, several of whom were present at the event, and the more recent teams who had won the Intervarsities Championship for seven consecutive years P a g e
