1 Ladies Boat Club St. Michael s Head of the River Saturday 29th January saw the racing season kick off for DULBC at St. Michael s Head of the River, Limerick. It was an extremely successful day, and DULBC s huge turnout which included a Senior 8, Intermediate 8 and six Novice 8s racing throughout the day, as well as an Intermediate 4 and Novice 4, served to intimidate competition and set us up for some good results. For the Novice girls it was their first racing experience, and DULBC dominated the top of the Novice 8 table securing 2nd, 4th and 5th place overall. I think it s fair to say they all thoroughly enjoyed themselves as well. The Novice 4+ had an excellent race, beating closest rivals by over a minute, and the Intermediate 4+ were also celebrating as they came 2 and a half minutes ahead of the next Intermediate 4+. However the result of the day was the Senior 8, who beat multiple UCD senior boats to a 13second clear victory, giving them a huge boost going into the next few weeks of training approaching the eagerly awaited Colours Boat Race down the Liffey on St. Patrick s Day. DU Ladies Boat Club Alumni Dinner After a quick turnaround for the Inter/Senior squad, The Alumni Dinner kicked off in style in The Russell Court Hotel on the evening of 29th January. A huge amount of work has been put into building our alumni network in the past year, and the extremely enjoyable dinner showed this has really paid off. There was a great attendance from past-dulbc rowers, both those who have only recently graduated and those who left the club a fair few years ago! After a delicious three course meal we were joined by the Novices, the men s boat club, and the rest of the Islandbridge rowing community to celebrate the days racing results. The dinner was a great success, and we express our huge appreciation and thanks to Anna Walsh, Iseult Finn, Caoimhe Proud-Murphy and all those who made the night possible. Upcoming Events We are entering into a busy time with races every week for the next month. The Novices will be competing in the Head of the Shannon on February 26th, and then Dublin Head and Erne Head take place on the following two weekends. The Colours Boat Race will be taking place on St. Patrick s Day this year, as part of the St. Patricks Day Festival, so this is the main focus of the next few weeks of training as crew selection and preparation becomes the main priority. Boxing Club The Club lost out on the IUABA Seniors on the 11th & 12th of February. There were three winners from College; Michael Gibbons, Georgia Preston Maher and Thomas Spencer but lost out overall to UCD. Unfortunately the Club lost colours last night 5-2.

2 Climbing Club PINKS Congratulations to Darragh Sweetnam who has been awarded Pinks for his achievements in the climbing club, (notably climbing E6 6b Asterisk in Dalkey Quarry). Darragh began and has been an active member in the club for the last two years, and in this short time has reached an exceptional standard, bouldering 7b and climbing consistently hard routes, both in sport and traditional style, consolidated by a summer spent climbing in the French Alps. GLENDALOUGH TRIP available on our website. The Climbing Club brought 40 of its members to the Glendalough Valley in Wicklow this month, unfortunately the persistent rain throughout the entire weekend meant that no actual rock climbing took place but there was plenty of hiking and even table bouldering. A big thanks to our trips officers, Richard Duggan and Sorcha Ni Lideadha and of course the rest of the committee for all of their hard work. A detailed trip report will be IRISH BOULDERING LEAGUE The final round was held in NUIG with quality problems set by Howard Hebblethwaite. Great performances from all competitors and morale was high throughout the day. Overall league results have Darragh Sweetnam finishing 5th in the male category and Katie Coldrick finishing 6th in the female category, as relative newcomers to the League this is a well-earned result for both. They are both continuing to train for the Irish Bouldering Championships which will be held in the Ozone, Belfast on Saturday 2nd April. INTERVARSITIES Climbing Intervarsities are coming up at the end of this month (26th-28th February) and will be hosted by UCD. Last year Trinity took home the trophy so let s see if we can hold on to it for another year! Routes will be set by Ricky Bell and Michael Duffy, and Ricky Bell will open the event with a slideshow on Friday night. For those of you who don t know who he is we will be hosting a movie night on the 23rd of Feb in the Pav extension to watch Underdeveloped, a film about those pushing the limits in irish climbing Fencing Club News The Club retain the Sykes-Mooney Cup in DkIT sabre colours with an emphatic win over Dundalk. In the East of Ireland Open DUFC had all top-4 spots in men's sabre with Chris Mills triumphing in the final against Jean-Baptiste Muller and Jack Mc Hugh and Rodrigo Gonzalez sweeping up third place. Liz Fitzgerald beat UCCs Aoife O'Loughlin to win Women's sabre, while Helen Naddy achieved an impressive third place finish. Tal Coyle and Kate Cunningham came second and third in women's epee. And Anna Smith clocked up another win for DUFC in women's foil.

3 Ladies Gaelic Football With the addition of a Trinity ladies intermediate team this year, the future prospectives look bright for the club. The intermediate team who were just set up this year, did exceptionally well to reach the Division 5 all-ireland final against Marino (Match report below) having beaten UCD in the semi final. The senior ladies Division 2 league campaign started out with a game versus St.Pats. who narrowly won by just 1 point. The ladies then beat DIT but unfortunately loosing to Maynooth ended their league campaign. With the championship just under-way, the ladies won their first game against Athlone IT (match report below) and are now set to play UCD next tuesday the 22 nd to decide if they qualify for the weekend in Limerick. Trinity 0-04 Marino League final Trinity Ladies seconds team suffered heart break after being defeated in the league final in Clan na Gael last week. Marino were the only team to defeat Trinity in their group games and following comprehensive victories over Froebel and UCD Trinity were confident that they could avenge their first round defeat. Marino got off to a blistering start though and within the first ten minutes they had six points on the board. Trinity were finding it hard to get any possession and when Marino were attacking it was impossible to break them down. The few times that Trinity attacked, Marino were always there to close up space and deny the home side any shooting opportunities. Trinity stood their ground through an outstanding performance from goalkeeper Clare Foley ensured Trinity still had a chance of a come back. Maeve Breen won the ball in the fullback line and sprinted up the field before combining beautifully with Jacinta Brady for Trinity s solitary point of the half. When Trinity showed glimpses of their fitness and footballing skills and actually took the game to Marino they made them look very ordinary. The problem was they couldn t get possession to do this enough. The teachers tagged on a few more points before half time to leave the score 9-1 at the break. Overcoming an eight point deficit was always going to be an uphill struggle but Trinity were exemplary in the second half. They stood toe to toe with Marino in every sector of the field matching them for every score. Unfortunately it was too little too late and the goals that Trinity needed to haul themselves back into contention never came. The heart and desire shown in the second half in particular though was a credit to the team and in their first year in existence getting to a league final is no mean feat. The future of Trinity Ladies football is in good hands! After a long bus journey following a late venue change the Trinity girls got off to a sluggish start with Athlone registering two points before Sinead O Sullivan got Trinity off the mark with a free kick. Trinity espoused the maxim that your attack is the first line of defence, with tenacious tackling in the forwards overturning the Athlone kick out and once again O Sullivan was on hand to convert a free kick and bring the sides level. The game cracked to life when Marie Ni Mhuineachain rose the highest to fist the ball to the net past the Athlone net minder who was outstanding throughout. Siobhan Melvin then gave an exhibition of the core skills of the game when she took a wonderful catch and turned and slotted the ball between the posts. Athlone responded in style driving through the heart of the Trinity defence to get a point. They attacked again but good pressure from Kathryn Rice forced the shot wide. Marie Ni Mhuineachain again showed her predatory instincts reacting quickest to slide the ball to the net after Sinead

4 O Sullivan s initial shot had been well saved. Again though, the westerners showed a lot of character and after a period of sustained pressure got the goal they deserved to leave just 3 points between the teams. On the stroke of half time the referee awarded a throw up in the heart of the Athlone defence. Karen O Shea won the ball and in one fluid movement turned and struck the ball low to the net giving the College a six point cushion at the break on a score line of 3-4 to 1-4. Siobhan Melvin opened the scoring in the second half and an immediate reply from Athlone reflected the way the half would continue for every point Trinity scored Athlone broke up the field to reply and vice versa. Despite their sustained pressure Athlone never really looked like getting the big score they needed to haul themselves back into contention and a few Sinead O Sullivan points and a superlative effort from Carol Dooher was enough to leave the final score reading 3-10 to 1-08 in favour of Trinity. The challenge of facing UCD in Belfield is a serious one but the Trinity side showed glimpses of the form they are capable of against Athlone, with some brave tackling, excellent well worked scores and some good passages of team work. Considering this game was the first competitive outing for the senior ladies team after a long lay off they can take many positives from the performance. As always with any UCD - Trinity match the stakes are high and a victory will see Trinity qualify for the Lynch Cup weekend in Limerick on 19 th March which is where every college team aspires to be. The girls lost out to Trophy holders Railway after a Rachel Scott goal had put them at 2-1 with 5 minutes to go, Railway s Kate Dillon banging home two drag flicks in the final moments of the game to make the score 4-1 at the hooter. But the girls bounced back taking Glenanne 1-0 in a tight match to come second in the group and qualify for the Semi s on Sunday. The girls faced Armagh on Sunday and held a 3-2 scoreline with 7 minutes to go, but unfortunately it was Armagh who triumphed in the final few, popping one past the Trinity corner defence to seal the deal and a place in the finals against Railway. Armagh went on to beat Railway 2-1 with a corner scored on the final whistle of the tournament, and will go on to represent Ireland in the European Indoors next year. Colours Success for DULHC: The ladies' 1st and 2nd XI both won their Colours matches this Tuesday in Belfield. The 1st XI took a 2-0 scoreline at full time against Leinster League 3rd Place and Current Irish Senior Cup holders UCD, with Eanna Horan bagging a double for Trin. The first goal came after sustained pressure from Trinity resulted in a series of short corners, with E Horan scoring with a strike beating goalkeeper Stella Davis. Horan bagged her second shortly afterwards, knocking one in from play to put Trinity in a more comfortable position. Sister and Trinity Captain Maebh Horan caused the UCD defense some trouble throughout the game, coming

5 from deep to break their defensive lines. UCD were not without their moments however -a late strike from Irish International Chloe Watkins nearly put UCD back in the running, but goalkeeper Jessie Elliott saw the ball to defender Caroline Murphy to keep a clean sheet. GAA Football Club The Men's Senior Team were very unlucky to be knocked out in the second round of the Trench Cup last Thursday by a very strong Tralee IT team. After comfortably beating Tallagh IT in the opening round, the team had high hopes for the competition. Unfortunately despite a great effort from everyone, Tralee ended the game four points ahead. Coach Brian Talty said "Everyone involved can take great pride in the effort they put in today". Particular note should go to Jeff Hart and Mickey Boyle who both had great performances. The Men's Intermediate Team are partaking in a blitze competition in DCU on on Monday. They hope to continue the strong form they shown aleady this year in a win over St. Patrick's College and a narrow loss to DCU. Anybody who would like to come along to DCU in support would be very welcome. The Fresher Team have yet to begin their championship but have been steadily improving since their opening friendly game. Coach Paddy McNulty said he expects them to go far in the competition." I have to make an amendment to the Freshers Team news. They were unlucky to be knocked out of the championship in the first round by St. Patrick's college who beat them by a narrow margin. Head Coach Paddy McNulty said " The lads have been great all season and were unlucky to be knocked out so soon." Kayak Club The kayak club have just returned from a weekend at Varsities in Cork. The canoe polo team performed very well and were placed second overall, having won their group stage. They just lost out to Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology in the final. Long distance saw Tom Brennan come 2nd in men's high performance after a sprint finish between himself and the winner. Clare Quigley also placed 2nd in Women's General Purpose. The freestyle team also impressed in what was a tricky sluice feature and were awarded an impressive 3rd place. Overall the Trinity team placed fifth at varsities. Six paddlers from the kayak club competed in the Colligan Gorge BoaterX Games in mid November. One of the teams was placed fourth and Deirdre Bannan, the Captain, came second in the ladies category

6 Lawn Tennis Club News Trinity Tennis club s Floodlit League success Trinity Tennis club is currently celebrating a great result from their Floodlight League campaign. All three men s teams and the ladies third team contested finals in their respective divisions. Considering the fact that teams compete in each division, four of the club s six teams reaching the final of their division equated to an extremely impressive achievement for the club. In the men s finals night Trinity I were unlucky to come out the wrong end of a 2-1 score line to a very impressive Monkstown Ist team. Despite the loss, the squad of Chris Ma, Mark Carpenter, Gavin Gilhawley, Simon Clarke and Mark Crowley can be justifiably proud of their campaign that resulted in them achieving promotion to the league s top division for the first time in the club s recent history. Trinity II had a well-deserved 2-1 victory in the final over Shankill I. Throughout the campaign the squad was captained by Ian O Connell, and consisted off, Stephen Ludgate, Martin Bachwerk, Jack McHugh and Ross Pender. Trinity III rounded of an extremely impressive campaign beating Greystones II in a convincing fashion. Paddy Kilcoyne secured an early singles victory and was backed up by the doubles team of Andy Stevenson and Peter Wu. This meant that the team captain Justin Hintze did not need to finish his match, of which he was leading anyway, as Trinity had secured an overall victory by this point. Elsewhere Trinity Ladies III beat Ratoath I. Rachel Thompson beat her opponent comfortably 6-1, 6-3 and Aimee O Hanlon put an end to Ratoath s chance of a victory in the final with her score of 7-5,6-1. That meant that the combination of team captain Sarah Brooks, and ladies club captain Grainne O Halloran, could bring a premature end to their doubles match. After a very successful Floodlit League campaign, Trinity Tennis club is looking in great form for the annual tennis Intervarsities which is due to be held in Galway next week. Best of luck guys! Snowsports Club News Shane McShera (JF MSISS) competed in the World University Games in Turkey (held on the 4th-6th of Feb). He competed in the Giant Slalom and Slalom. Shane finished 69th out of 108 competitors in the Giant Slalom but had difficulty on a very difficult slalom course and unfortunately skied out (retired from the race). Shane was only 1 of 2 Irish competitors at the games with Nick McKelvey (Dundee University, Scotland) being the other. He also competed in the FIS Ski World Championships in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, where he competed in the Giant Slalom and Slalom. With an extremely strong field featuring some of the top names in Alpine Racing from across the world, such as Bode Miller and Ted Ligety, Shane finished a very respectable 111th out of approximately 180 competitors in the Giant Slalom. This is the first time in DUSSC's club history that we have had a member represent us at one of the highest levels of ski competitions and we would like to wish Shane the best of luck in all his future races over the next few years. Catheine Hillard (JF Education) has qualified for the British University Indoor Snowsports Championship Finals in both the Women's Ski Slalom and Women's Ski Slope-style. The finals will take place in SNO! Zone, Castleford on the 9th of March, 2011.

7 The Irish Snowsports Intervarsities will take place in the Ski Club of Ireland, Kiltiernan this coming weekend. With over 30 competitors already signed up, DUSSC have got a great chance of finally taking home the gold which has eluded us over the past few years. Squash Club News Trinity Squashing the opposition at the 2011 Intervarsity Championships by Tony Simpson After months of intensive training, the weekend of the squash intervarsities finally arrived. The two men s teams and the ladies team made the trip up to Queens University Belfast to compete in the 2011 Inter-varsity Squash Competition. The ladies A team had the disadvantage of being a woman down. However this did not faze them. Their first match was against Galway. This turned out to be the toughest of the day for the courageous sports women. The Club Captain Sarah Corcoran as usual played her best and led her team to victory. They faced DCU in their second game of the tournament. As you might expect victory was easily achieved. Now all that stood between them and glory was UCD in the final. Though UCD put in a noble effort they were no match for Trinity s best. The final was won 4/1 making the Trinity Ladies A the 2011 Intervarsity Champions, continuing their winning streak for a second year in a row. The first match for the Mens B team, captained by Dave Mulligan was against RCSI. This was a thrilling encounter and closely fought match. After a disappointing start in the first two games it was felt this may not have been their day. But then Ed Miles lifted their spirits in the third game with a clinical 3-0 win. This gave then Mens B the confidence they needed to go on and win the next two matches in impressive style. This meant they moved on to the next round, which was going to be against UCC. After their earlier win the Mens B were confident that they could triumph. Skipping the details they were right. Now the final beckoned against Trinity s arch-nemesis UCD. Trinity had beaten them in the colours earlier in the year but they feared that UCD had improved and were out for revenge. Trinity should not have been so worried. The final score was 5/0, meaning that the Trinity Mens B team were the Intervarsity Champions. Led by their Captain Doug Doherty, the Mens A got off to a great start trashing UCC 5/0, which enabled them to advance to the semi finals where they would meet UCD. In a near replica of the colours match our team disposed of them with ease insuring them a place in the final against Queens. Trinity put up a great fight in the final and certainly gave Queens some great resistance. However having the advantage of home soil Queens had that extra spark leading them to winning. All in all it was a very successful weekend enjoyed by all and a big thank you must be said to Queens for putting on a great tournament. There is no doubt that Trinity will compete against these teams next year and be even more successful.

8 Trampoline Club Trinity Trampoline Club Win Colours Saturday 12 th of February saw the return of the Colours competitions between Trinity s Trampoline Club and their rivals from UCD. The day began early as the trampolines were set up and competitors from both clubs made the most of the remaining time to practice and perfect their routines. The routines consisted of 10 consecutive moves which ranged from shape jumps to double somersaults with multiple twists for extra difficulty. With the judging panel ready the competition began and Trinity s club excelled from the out set. TCD gathered an astonishing 17 medals in total, taking first place in the categories of novice men, intermediate men, intervanced women, intervanced men and advanced women. The standard of both clubs was extremely high. However, Trinity won overall taking back the Shield from UCD for the first time in 5 years. January saw the belated hosting of the annual Mini Triathlon. Our largest yet, 28 eager participants completed their very first triathlon composed of a 200m swim, 5km static bike ride and 1.5km run. Congratulations to all participants, but special accolades to Jennifer Ryan and Graham Campbell for winning the female and male categories respectively. The event helped raise over 200 for the extremely worthwhile Trinity Takes To The Streets. Many thanks to the Sports Centre and Pavilion Bar staff for helping make it such an enjoyable day!

9 During RAG week, the Triathlon Club teamed up with SVP and other societies to provide the Static Ironman. The most grueling of all triathlons, one team composed of Maread Finn, John Reidy, Simon Coyne, Sarah Eftonga and Quentin Crowley pooled efforts to swim 3.9km, cycle 180km (on a stationary club bike in Front Square) and run a full marathon around the cricket and rugby pitch all for a good cause. A special mention goes out to Annelies Pletsers for organizing and running the event on the day. Our lecture series continues and we re pleased to be able to announce that Bryan Keane (Irish professional triathlete) will be coming to give a talk on the trials and tribulations of triathlons at the beginning of March. Ultimate Frisbee Club Open: Trinity men competed in Uni-league recently in WIT which acted as a qualifying event for UK Outdoor Nationals, their second place finish earned them a spot Division 2 in Sheffield on the 17th/18th of March. Womens: Afterwinning their 3rd Indoor varsity final the Trinity women earned a place at UK Womens Indoor Nationals where they preformed very well improving upon last years 16th place by 8 positions, finishing the weekend at 8th. Beginners: Trinity Ultimate won the tournament In ITT on the 12/13th of February which was an entry/intermediate level tournament. Ireland: The following Trinity players were selected to represent their country in 3 different divisions in Europe Ultimate Championships in Slovenia. This includes a win over Dublin VC who are currently second in the league.
