Whilst this seems to be an easy way of fundraising, it is in fact illegal unless the seafood is obtained from a legitimate source such as a commercial fisher, a licensed fish receiver or a dealer in fish (all of which have regulations that must be followed in the obtaining of legitimate seafood). The raffling/selling of recreationally taken seafood undermines the quota management system put in place to protect New Zealand s unique resource that is there for all to enjoy. The buying, selling, raffling of illegal seafood is an offence against the Fisheries Act 1996 and carry heavy penalties provided for in legislation including fines of up to $250,000. If you have any questions regarding your obligations under the Fisheries Act, or would like to report any suspicious fishing activities, please do not hesitate to contact the Kaitaia Ministry for Primary Industries office on (09) or any other Ministry office via the POACHER hotline. Yours faithfully Chris Spiers Senior Compliance Officer, Ministry for Primary Industries KAITAIA Tai Tokerau Kapa Haka Competition Sept 5th, Te Rangi Āniwaniwa To be hosted by Waitangi Cultural Committee Friday Sept 4th Pōhiri and return taonga Saturday Sept 5th Performances junior and secondary divisions.
