It is my pleasure to welcome the 2017 National Maori Hockey Tournament to Hamilton. It has been 7 years since Hamilton last hosted the tournament; it is great that we are able to host the event for a 4 th time. I am encouraged to see that the tournament is not just focusing on the competition but providing coaching clinics to support our junior hockey players. I'd like to extend a particularly warm welcome to those who are visiting our city for the first time. It's great to have you here and I'm confident you will be impressed by our city. While you are visiting Hamilton, make sure you sample some of our great hospitality. We ve got plenty of award-winning restaurants and eating places for you to enjoy as well as great shopping and entertainment. Take a walk or run along river walkways, around Hamilton Lake or through the international award-winning Hamilton Gardens. Waikato Museum, at the southern end of Victoria Street, presents the stories and history of our city and our region. Alternatively, please contact the friendly staff at the Hamilton i- SITE Information Centre on 0800 HAMILTON ( ), or visit them at their Garden Place location. I wish you all the very best for the tournament and hope you enjoy your time in Hamilton. Andrew King Mayor of Hamilton

4 National Maori Hockey History Maori have been involved in the sport of hockey for nearly a century in New Zealand. Early Maori hockey revolved around whanau or marae based teams that competed locally against other whanau or marae. As the sport grew in popularity, tournaments began to emerge. Through the mid 1900 s, Maori hockey tournaments were held throughout the country, mainly on the East Coast of the North Island, throughout the Bay of Plenty and in the Waikato-Maniapoto district. However, these tournaments were not enduring and slowly Maori hockey started to dissipate. Involvement by Maori in hockey dwindled with the reduced number of Maori oriented tournaments until there was few, if any, to talk about. Through the 1970 s and 1980 s, Maori hockey as an entity was nearly non-existent. It was not until the early 1990 s that a renewed focus on Maori hockey led to what we now have here today the National Maori Hockey Tournament. Marg Hiha is widely regarded as one of the key driving forces in ensuring that Maori hockey lived on. In 1992, Marg & a number of committed individuals introduced the first national tournament in Napier. Since then, the Aotearoa Maori Hockey Tournament has grown in both popularity and in stature across Aotearoa. The tournament has a proud tradition of hosting some of this country s best hockey players who have achieved at the highest levels playing for their country. And the presence of Maori players at the elite level continues to grow each year. Waikato Maniapoto last hosted the tournament in 2010 at the Gallagher Hockey Centre and are now proud to host the 26 th Annual Aotearoa Maori Hockey Tournament at the same venue. We look forward to helping ensure that Maori Hockey succeeds and will continue to be a breeding ground for our talented players as well as a place for our players to thrive.
