1 Thursday 13th September 2018 Kia ora koutou katoa, greetings Parents and Whanau, This week we are celebrating Te Wiki o te Reo Māori /Māori Language Week and the theme is Kia Kaha te reo Māori. Kia Kaha is a well-known phrase in New Zealand, meaning be strong. We often talk about language health, strength, and revitalisation. So when we say Kia Kaha te Reo Māori we re saying - Let s make the Māori language strong'. Yesterday our FHS Kapa Haka, along with Whaea Nat walked to Smales Farm and joined in with the Westlake High Schools students to promote Te Reo Maori in Maori Language week. This event is being supported by Auckland City Council and Te Taura Whiri (Māori Language Commission) and was one of 3 events being rolled out in greater Auckland for Māori Language week (10 16 September). Today, our FHS Kapa Haka with Whaea Nat were also part of a wider community event, proudly performing kapa haka items at the Glenfield Mall. Nga Mihi Principal, John Marwick Our FHS Kapa Haka 2018 Check us out on the news! stuff.co.nz

2 Red Nose day is on Friday 28th september. We will be holding a wacky red mufti day to fundraise money for Cure Kids. What is Red Nose Day? Red Nose Day is Cure Kids biggest annual appeal, and this September we need your help to raise $1 million for child health research. When: Red Nose Day is on the last day of Term 3, Friday 28th September. Why: To raise $1 million for Cure Kids. The money raised will be used to fund important child health research to improve, extend and save the lives of our children. Cure Kids vision is a healthy childhood for everyone, focusing on raising funds to enable high impact health research to find the cures our kids need. The Year 3-6 ESOL students from Mrs Fitzgerald s classes will be organising a fundraising event for Cure Kids. We will be organising a mufti day for Friday 28th September. All children that are wanting to make a gold coin donation will be able to wear red mufti clothes (crazy red hair, red clothes, red footwear, etc). Students will give their gold coin donation to the teacher on that Friday morning. There will be a prize for best dressed boy and girl from each year level. Over the next few weeks ESOL students will be going into classrooms to advertise the upcoming event. The ESOL students will also be selling red noses and badges outside the ESOL classroom on this day. We will be there from 8.15am until 8.50am on Friday 28th September. Red foam noses will cost $2 and badges will cost $3. (Students will need to bring extra money on top of their mufti donation if they would like to purchase these) If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me:nfitzgerald@forresthill.school.nz

4 Pupuke Cluster Schools Cross Country On Thursday 6th September, 22 students from Forrest Hill School attended the Pupuke Cluster Schools Cross Country at Killarney Park in Takapuna. The weather was not the kindest to our runners compared with our school cross country and the children were challenged by the cold, the rain and a gruelling, muddy course. All of the FHS runners showed awesome sportsmanship by all finishing the course with smiles on their faces and cheering each other on in each race. We had some amazing achievements, namely: Sam Glackin (Y6) and Daley Pohio (Y4) came 1st place in their respective races. Zion Morgan-Tafea (Y4) came 2nd place and Mackenzie Guy (Y6) placed 3rd. Thanks to Karen Burke, Aaron Schmidt and Natalie Sharp for offering to help with photography, the tarpaulin and general support. 5 Auckland Museum This week our International students went to the Auckland Museum. The students loved exploring around the Museum and looking at all of the exhibits. They especially loved going into the Marae and going into the volcanic eruption simulation. A big thank you to Paran Jung and Angela White who also came on the trip, they really enjoyed showing the students around the Museum.

6 Garden To Table in Room 12 A core part of learning in Year Five at Forrest Hill School is the Garden to Table programme. We endeavour to integrate this into our daily programme and build the curriculum around it. Over the course of this year, the students of Room Twelve have been keeping a journal in which they record their various experiences in the kitchen and garden. Writing about such things too often can be a little uninspiring and counterproductive, so we sought recently to introduce many of the descriptive techniques we have learnt about in the world of narrative into our own reflections on the programme. See how many of these techniques you can find in the excerpts from student work below: topic-specific vocabulary, onomatopoeia, hyperbole, simile, personification, alliteration. Elizabeth: Arghhh! Millie and I were carrying what seemed like the heaviest bucket of water in the world, and the water had just splashed all over me. My skorts were wet and I looked like I had peed my pants! Jeremy: I made rainbow carrot salad. I peeled the carrot and cut the spring onion. I squeezed to get lemon juice. It sounded like squish. I mixed it all together. I tasted a little bit, it was very yummy! I ate banana pikelets and rainbow carrot salad. I even ate pasta! Ralik: Kapow! the knife hit the greens. I was carefully cutting the vegetables. My group were cutting the freezing cold vegetables Evan: Swish! I m sweeping the floor carefully trying not to bump into anyone Seoyeon: Sizzle! went the pikelets. The pikelets were running away from the spatula! It was a race! A cross country! We made sure they were a nice golden brown colour. The more gold-ish the more scrumptious! Angela: Growl! The water in the sink churned around and around inside and formed a spinning whirlpool. Seppi: Drip, drip, drip, I m soooooo hot! I m carrying a wheelbarrow from the Hugh Forrest monument and then I overheard the best idea I ever heard in history! How about take your jacket off, the best idea ever! Eassin:...we went back into the hall and had herb rolls, veggie soup and crunchy croutons (though they weren't crunchy anymore since they were drowned in soup). Sidney: Ewww! the compost was full of creepy crawly slimy bugs. Evelyn: SPLAT! Water splashed on my face while I was washing dishes. Millie: I could see the slimy worms slithering around in the soil.
