1 PUKETAPU PUKETAPU SCHOOL SCHOOL NEWSLETTER NEWSLETTER WEEK 3, TERM 3, 2018 EMPOWER ALL PEOPLE TO BE HEALTHY, LIFELONG LEARNERS Kia kaha - do your best * Kia māia - be courageous * Kia manawanui - have a heart PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE Kia ora koutou, It's really exciting to see so much learning around our topic for this term He Aō Mo Tātou - Sharing the Planet. As a sta we have been working hard to organise authentic learning experiences in and out of the classroom walls. Tamariki are investigating why our own backyard is so important to other living things and what we can do to help make a positive di erence, from the problems of plastic and reducing waste to creating great environments for other living creatures. Walking around the school has been really enjoyable talking to students about their learning. Matua Ngatai BIODIVERSITY AND BUGS Last week on Thursday and Friday the Totara team were extremely lucky to have Ash from the Lake Rotokare Sanctuary come and talk to us about the magical place where she works.

2 We had the best time ever learning about biodiversity, conservation, the sanctuary concept, pets and predators; the attributes of di erent plant and animal species and sustainability. We also got our brains active and our hands dirty as we made a bug hotel, we went bug catching, we learnt about lizards, such as skinks and geckos, about butter ies and we started to plan our various gardens (a lizard friendly garden, a butter y garden and a sensory garden). To follow up our awesome experiences with Ash we are lucky enough to actually visit her at the Lake Rotokare Sanctuary on Monday, 13 August. To be able to go on this unbelievably awesome trip each student needs to return their signed notice/slip and $4.50 to cover costs. We will be busing there, so children will need a packed lunch, drink bottle of WATER, a hat, a coat, a jersey, gumboots, or sneakers. We are also in need of parent support to help us explore the sanctuary. If you can help please let your child's teacher know. Spare notices can also be requested if they have gone missing in the school bag black hole.

4 RETHINKING PLASTIC Last week the Kaitiaki group did a beach clean up on Bell Block Beach. We were amazed at how much plastic we found and collected in a very short time. Today the Kaitiaki group and Green Team leaders met with Lorella from the Rethinking Plastic Revolution. She talked with them about all the plastic that is in the ocean. What we learned left us shocked, disappointed and sad... and wondering what we can do to make a di erence. Have a look at Lorella's Facebook page:

9 All netball is now nished for the year. We would like to say a huge thank you to all the coaches and helpers for all they have done for our teams. If you have a netball uniform (or any borrowed uniform at home), please return it to the o ce to avoid being charged. Breakfast Club We are needing tins of fruit please. Bring your tin to the o ce and you will go in the draw to win an amazing carrot cake from the White Pear. Delicious! Bring your tin in by Tuesday 14 August to go in the draw. Last call! We want your voice If you have not already had your say about our curriculum going forward, you have only a few more days to have your say online: Community Conversation 2018 Quiz Night - Thursday 23 August Home & School are holding a fundraising quiz night on Thursday 23 August at the Plymouth Hotel. Tickets are $10 each or $50 for a team of 6. Tickets will be on sale at the school o ce or on the door on the night. DECK REPAIRS We are so pleased that our Hall Deck is being repaired. The broken plastic panels are being replaced with timber, so we will have our stage back very soon. Mr Quince and Gary are working hard to get it xed up. PUKETAPU SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY: FUN RUN & WALK (NOT DAWDLE) Not long to go now! A massive thanks to Mr Quince for mowing the course. It looks fantastic!

10 It is wonderful to see everyone out training and the kids being excited about the event. Cross Country Sponsorship forms are out and the challenge is on to get asking people to sponsor. Every sponsorship form returned goes into the draw to win prizes and all the money raised goes to help our school. It is a fun run/walk (not dawdle), so the expectation is that every child takes part, both in training and on the day. The focus is on health and well being, challenging ourselves and taking part. It will be a dress up whanau event so we want everyone to dress up in their whanau colours and have a great time. Marshalls and Photographers are needed to help us run the event. If you can help, please let Paula or Kim know. Harold is on his way! The Life Education Trust Bus will be at school from Week 5 with another wonderful programme of learning about positive choice for a healthy mind and body. The whole school will be part of this. The cost of this is just $4 per student, which can be paid at the o ce. Lemonade Rimu 1 made lemonade with real lemons! The lemons have to be chopped in half, squeezed to get the juice out and then sieved. Then we add some sugar and some water and... it's lemonade!

Tom was very Brave Ameliah and Liana worked very hard on their reading. They drew these beautiful pictures of Tom and his Mum.

13 TECHNOLOGY IN KOWHAI 1 In Kowhai 1 we have been using an app to share our new learning and ndings with the class. The app is called Verso. We can watch a informative video and write a response to share with the class. Here are some kids in action recording their learning and sending it to the main screen so we can all discuss it. This has been a great way to brainstorm about our topic sharing the planet.
