1 Wednesday 19 August 2015 # 14 PAPAMOA SCHOOL NEWSLETTER Catch the learning wave, where all children can achieve! 312 Dickson Road, Papamoa Beach admin@papamoa.school.nz Phone: Absentee Line: Fax:
2 Papamoa School Issue # 14 Newsletter Wednesday 19 August 2015 Inside this Newsletter 1 Principal s message 2 PTA & School News 5 Sport News 8 Community Notices Message from our Principal Dear Parents and Caregivers, Spelling and Handwriting Books were sent home last Wednesday. We hope this has allowed you to become more aware of what your child is learning and where you may be able to support them. Please do not hesitate to drop in and chat to your child s teacher, if you would like some information on what activities you could introduce at home to re-inforce the concepts being learnt. At this time of year our Year 6 students will begin to be offered a number of opportunities to become more familiar with the Year 7 & 8 educational opportunities on offer in We coordinate this, so that you are able to select the school that you believe will provide the most suitable learning environment for your child when they leave Papamoa at the end of the year. We have had a very busy fortnight hosting a visit by Debbie McCauley, the author of two books: Motiti Blue and the Oil Spill: A Story from the Rena Disaster and Taratoa and the Code of Conduct: A Story from the Battle of Gate Pa. Debbie was a finalist in the non-fiction children s section of the New Zealand Book Awards and we were thrilled that she was able to spend some time sharing her thoughts and perspectives with some of our year 5 and 6 students. Our League Team competed in the WBOP 9 Aside Competition and were placed a creditable third. I know they were wonderful ambassadors and congratulate them on their success. My thanks go to Tiepa and those who helped support the team. We were thrilled to welcome parents to our Math Evening which was a great success. The guest speaker from the University of Waikato outlined the Math Stages, their links to the Curriculum levels and the identified examples of appropriate knowledge in a very personable manner. The evening culminated in the sharing of some games that can be played to consolidate selected Math knowledge. My thanks go to Jo our guest speaker, the Math Curriculum Team and all who were able to attend the evening. Selected students have participated in Beach Brilliance Arts Workshops. These were a great success and enabled them to share their talents with others across our Cluster of Schools. This week we will have more students attending the Math Workshops. Last week culminated in the Karewa Teddy Bears Picnic and a wonderful opportunity to provide more collaborative learning opportunities, as well as enjoying listening to some great stories. My thanks go to the Karewa Team and all who came along to support the day. This week begins with Mrs Gen Fuller and I attending a Tauranga Energy Consumer Trust evening, where the school is being donated $37,324 dollars to put toward extending the range of technology tools we have. This is a wonderful donation that will provide your child increased opportunity to engage in many awesome learning activities. Our sincere thanks go to the TECT Trustees. Have a wonderful week. Phil Friar ((Principal)
3 Wednesday 1922 August July 2015 (Page 2) 2) Our next PTA meeting will be held on Wednesday 9 th September at 7.00pm in the Conference Room. Our next meeting Board meeting will be held on Tuesday 25 th August at 6.30pm in the Conference Room. Daffodil Day Next Friday 28 August please wear yellow and bring along a gold coin donation to support the Cancer Society. This is one charity we all support as a community. Thank you for your support! School Mathathon: Lateness: Thank you to all who have made the effort and brought back your mathathon sponsorship money. For the remainder that still have to collect any money please attend to this as soon as possible, and bring it to your classroom teacher. For any outstanding money after this Friday, the PTA will be following up with a phone call. There is a worrying trend developing of children continually being late to class. Twenty minutes late a day will equate to 11 school days absent a year! Lateness is robustly monitored by the school and can lead to a referral to the Truancy officer. Teddy s Bear Picnic: Last Thursday our Karewa classes (years 1 and 2) had a very fun and educational Teddy Bear s Picnic. Here is a photo from this event. 19 August 19 August 20 August 21 August 25 August 28 August 2 September 3 September Newsletter Home Speech Competition (Motiti) Beach Brillance Maths day Girls Rugby Tournament Gordon Spratt BOT Meeting (6.30Pm) DAFFODIL Day (mufti day wear yellow gold coin) Sport and Team Photos Newsletter Home
4 Wednesday 19 August 2015 (3) Girls Rugby: Preparations are nearly complete for this Friday 21st August at Gordon Spratt Reserve for the WBOP Primary School Girls Rugby 10-a-side Championships. A huge thanks to Kendra Reynolds, Anita Trappitt, and Mike Nitz, for all their help in preparing our teams. Best of luck to the girls, have a great tournament. Rugby League: 3 teams represented us at this tournament in Week 3 at Grenada Park, Arataki.. As the photos show, conditions were very tough and our boys did exceptionally well. A big thanks to Mr Tahana, Wayne Bell and all the other parents that helped to prepare and transport our teams to this event. Rugby: 8 very talented rugby players from Papamoa Primary School represented Papamoa Rugby Club, winning the U10 grand final vs. Arataki on Saturday at Te Puna Rugby Club. What an outstanding effort! Congratulations to Kobi A, Lyric B, Micah H, Rico K, Harry McM, Kerry O'R, Kiwa R, and Billy S. Year 5 and 6 Winter Tournament: Sport Bay or Plenty are running a Winter Sports Tournament for Year 5 and 6 students in Week 10 of this term based at Blake Park and Links Ave. The sports involved are Rugby 10s, Football ( 7 a side), Hockey (6 a side), and Netball. All sports will have two divisions, Year 5 and Year 6. There is no longer a weight restriction in Rugby, there will be a year 5 and a 6 team instead. There is no Basketball, as the WBOP Primary School Basketball Champs were held in Term 2. Papamoa Primary will compete in a Mini-Cluster event against Golden Sands, Te Akau Ki Papamoa, and Tahatai Coast to qualify for the 22nd September WBOP event. The date of this Mini-Cluster qualifier will be Friday 4th September, and more information about this exciting new event will be revealed later this term. We are looking to have the Mini Cluster Hockey Tournament on Friday August 28th, due to turf availability. Orienteering: The WBOP Primary School Orienteering Champs is being held on the 22nd of OCTOBER, not the 22nd September as previously stated. Apologies for the confusion. This weekend the Papamoa Rugby Club is hosting the Under 10 Champion of Champions Tournament, and our boys will play the best from Central and Eastern Bay to find the Bay of Plenty U10 Champion. Games at start at 10am, there will be a sausage sizzle happening throughout the day so get down there and show your support for the Papamoa Rugby Club: am - Western Bay vs Central Bay 11.25am - Central Bay vs Eastern Bay 12:50am - Western Bay vs Eastern Bay Top 10 quotes that all athletes should live by No.6 "To win, you have to believe you can do it. You have to be passionate about it. You have to really WANT the result - even if this means years of hard work" - Sir Peter Blake Sporting Dates for Term 3 Friday 21st August WEEK 5 BOP Primary School Girls Rugby Gordon Spratt Reserve (All Day) Friday 28 August WEEK 6 Year 5/6 Mini Cluster Blake Park (morning) Friday 4 th September WEEK 7 Year 5/6 Mini Cluster Rugby 10 Papamoa Primary (morning) Year 5/6 Mini Cluster Netball & Tahatai Coast (morning) Tuesday 22nd September WEEK 10 BOP Primary School Year 5 and 6 Winer Tournament Football, Rugby 10 s, Netball and Hockey (All day) Tuesday 22nd October WEEK 10 BOP Primary School Orienteering Champs (All Day)
