1 HIKUAI SCHOOL NEWSLETTER 30th June 2017 Our People, Our Environment - Photo by Grace Macready BREAKING NEWS HIKUAI SCHOOL WINS THE REGIONAL EPro8 CHALLENGE!! WOW!!! What an amazing achievement by our Year 6 EPro8 Team at Morrinsville Intermediate today. Congratulations to Antonio, Ethan, Elijah and Keira. SCHOOL-HOUSE AND GROUNDS REJUVENATION DAY Saturday 15th July 9:00am to 4:00pm - See you there!! The schoolhouse is an important part of our beautiful rural school and it s now in need of some TLC as part of its annual upkee p. We need as many adults, kids, cousins, aunties and uncles as we can to come in and help us prepare the house for our next family to the school. If you could make it on this day please call the office ( ) and let Michelle know. A list will be sent out shortly as to tools and products that we might need on the day that you could bring if available. We ll make sure everyone that helps is rejuvenated as they work with a free sausage sizzle too. See you there!!

2 A STORY OF TRUE SPORTSMANSHIP Two teams were playing Tapuwae. Both teams were giving it their all but at half time one team had a substantial and commanding lead. The teacher looking after the team that was behind at halftime noted that the team who was ahead had gathered together without their teacher and were deep in discussion. Oh no, they're thinking of more ways to beat us! the teacher thought. The halftime whistle blew and the second half began. The team behind started well, scoring one..two...three...points! Yes! thought the teacher We re doing okay this half. That s when the teacher noticed something, something special. It wasn't obvious and perhaps only a teacher may have picked up on it. That player on the side that was ahead who was super fast last half was now running a little bit slower and...yes... that student who could throw a mile, now wasn't throwing as far. The teacher clicked The other team weren't planning on more ways to beat us, they were planning on ways to give us pride in our performance! The game ended with the the team ahead at half time still being well ahead at the end of the game but more importantly two teams left the field happy, encouraged and enthusiastic about their day. The teacher that witnessed this was so moved by what they had seen called me on Tuesday night to let me know what one of our teams had done. They expressed the sentiment that they had never seen such an act of selfless sportsmanship from a group of children in their 20 years of teaching. These are the students that our community create - simply amazing. Jared Stein - Hikuai School Principal DON T FORGET TO VISIT OUR NEW SCHOOL WEBSITE Room 3 - Our Junior School DID YOU KNOW? Did you know you can eat a science experiment? Room 3 have been mixing different white powders with water to see what happens. Some go hard, some dissolve and some mix to a dough. This week we took science a step further: mixed a white powder with water, kneaded it, rolled it, cooked it in the electric frypan, spread it with butter and golden syrup...and then ate it! Matariki by William. Matariki is a sign of a Maori new year. It s a time when Maori go to get a lot of fish to celebrate a whole year. I like Matariki. Matariki by Brooke. Yesterday we had a Matariki celebration. I like my feather that I made and I like my sparkling, pink kite. It was amazingly colourful. There was a lot of pink, blue, purple and yellow. The best was the feather. Matariki by Kyle. At Matariki, Puketui, Totara and Pinnacles made kites. I flew my kite on the skate ramp with Scott and I made my kite do a flip. Before we made our kites we made stars in Room 3. I started in Room 3 and after lunch we swapped over and went to Room 4 and then Room 5. In Room 5 we made feathers. I liked it when we made feathers in Room 5. It was spectacular.

3 Room 4 - Our Middle School With the America s Cup becoming more about flying than sailing (way to go ETNZ!), flight has become a bit of a theme in Room 4. Here we are making whirlybirds, a paper glider that will stay in the air for as long as you are walking behind it. How to Make and Fly a Whirlybird- By Kade Y6 Step 1: Cut two strips of phonebook paper 230mm long by 45mm wide. Step 2: Put one over another strip and leave 3 cm for tape. Step 3: Open your whirly bird to an oval shape. Then you re ready to go. You can use a book to make it fly. Step 4: Hold gently at the top, and make it do a little backflip then it should fly by spinning. Step 5: Hold the book on an angle and follow the whirly bird just underneath. If you do it properly the whirlybird won t stop, and won t touch the book. Matarik i- By Brayden Y4. On Tuesday, Hikuai School made Maori masterpieces. The three houses, Pinnacles, Totara, and Puketui, went around the classroom doing art and activities. Room 3 made wooden Matariki stars, Room 4 made kites, Room 5 made feathers for a Kakahu (school coat). Matariki - By Ruby Y4. On Tuesday we had a Matariki celebration. In Room 4, we made kites (Manu Tukutuku). First we cut out the shapes of our Manu Tukutukus, then we decorated them. We glued our supporters on and our feathers. I did a dragon face! I managed to get my Manu Tukutuku flying outside on the skate ramp. Room 5 - Our Senior School On Tuesday the 27 of June Hikuai school celebrated Matariki. Each block the three houses Puketui, Pinnacles and Totara switched between our 3 classrooms and each classroom had a different Matariki activity. In Room 3 there were a few different stations where you did a whole lot of different things but all were based on weaving. In the picture we had weaved stars. In Room 4 we made these really cool kites called Manu tukutuku and in Room 5 we designed our own cool little feathers that will be featured on a school cloak. Each time a new student comes to Hikuai school they make one and put it on the cloak. STUDENT PROFILE: This is Luke. Luke is relatively new to our school and he has been an amazing addition to our Room 5 class. Luke is exceptionally creative. During morning tea and lunchtimes, if he s not playing with his friends you can guarantee a pair of scissors, pieces of paper and anything else he can get his hands on to create things aren t too far away from his work space. He is inspired by the things around him and when combined with an imagination that is second to none he will produce some of the most incredible art

4 work. In the picture above he created three super-hero creatures. Luke, we encourage you to keep following your dream and keep creating. You just could be the next George Lucas! From Room FLASHBACK Fee for Transporting Children Just a note that there is now a charge for school trips where parent transport and/or the school minivan are being used. We understand that there is an inherent cost to parents who help out and for fuel for the van so it s important we go someway to helping out where we can.
