1 Tēnā Koutou Katoa, Greetings to you, POMPALLIER CATHOLIC COLLEGE Te Kāreti Katorika o Pomapārie learning excellence for life Newsletter 6: 13 May, 2016 When you look at the face of God, what do you see? Do you see a stern task master, a righteous judge, a distant presence, a strict parent, or do you see a forgiving and compassionate presence desiring all that is good for you? What you see is what you get. In the Gospels, Peter sees a forgiving and compassionate God who gives him a sense of hope to manage his failings. Judas sees a stern God who has little compassion for failure. Get it right, or you are in deep trouble. One becomes the chief financial officer, the other chief executive officer. One takes his own life, the other has his life taken from him. How did this happen? What was God thinking? Isaiah (55:8-9) tells us that it is not an easy question to answer. For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. However, an answer might be found by examining their educational background in the context of today. After all, education is meant to influence your future. Unfortunately, it s hard to find data on Judas so we will focus upon Peter via the Gospels and two letters (Epistles). Academic Outcomes Peter is a very academic student when he wants to be. He readily demonstrates this when the curriculum is adapted to reflect his own interests. He knows a lot about fishing so his teacher places much of his learning in that context. In one recent topic, his teacher gave him an initial pre-test to gage his understanding (Luke 5:2-11) and then the same test post resurrection (John 21:6-8). Fortunately for Peter that second time around it was a group based task so John helped him to get an Achieved outcome. At another time he was asked to address a significant theological issue (Mark 8:29) and topped the class with an Excellence endorsement from his teacher. Some days it is hard to predict which Peter will turn up in the classroom. Soft Skills At our College we place an emphasis on the following: relating to others, participation, managing self, literacy skills and thinking. Relating to others. On a recent overnight EOTC event Peter took a knife with him. When a group of outsiders confronted his group and the teacher, Peter thought it was appropriate to wave the knife around and in doing so, he cut the ear of another person. Once again the teacher had to intervene. On another occasion he denied being a member of our community. The possibility that he might get into trouble resulted in his declaration that he was not one of us. We expect more from our students. Participation. Peter can be relied upon to follow things through. He is always ready to be part of the group and is often the last one to leave an activity. He works well with others and is never afraid to take on the difficult tasks. He is someone who leads from the front by his deeds and takes a very active part in all our College events. Managing self. Peter recently jumped out of the boat to get to shore when we were still in deep water. This placed himself at considerable risk and also depleted the others ability to work as a team. Had it not been for the teacher s intervention there may have been a very tragic outcome. He needs to develop this skill further. Literacy Skills. Peter is Above the standard in Hebrew and is Below the standard in Greek. At times he elects to use an appointed writer to record his ideas in Greek. This is a good strategy and one that he should consider further when he needs to communicate with a wider audience. Thinking. Utilising critical thinking is something that we want all our students to evidence. It is valuable for the students and helps the College to attain more Excellence endorsements. Peter does not demonstrate an ability to consistently apply critical thinking at this stage. He still prefers to work at lower levels of thinking, such as a basic recall of good fishing spots, mixed with a tendency to jump to impulsive conclusions that show limited application of discernment or reasoned judgement. But he does demonstrate significant insight and critical discernment at other times that enables him to address complex situations. It is still a work in progress. In summary He is impulsive, opinionated, of mixed academic ability, lacking in the social refinement of any city living, and his rural background makes him willing to be somewhat physical when dealing with others. He also fails to follow through on some of his promises. However, his fellow students greatly respect him as a leader. They admire his tenacity, strength of character, his willingness to be always at their side when needed, and he readily acknowledges and addresses his own failings. He will also take one for the team if needed as he strives towards living out the values of his teacher. Some think he will be a good student leader. Possibly a future Head Boy. God only knows! Richard Stanton PRINCIPAL VISION STATEMENT Pompallier Catholic College is a Catholic community with a Marist charism that challenges all students to excel in their endeavours. We promote Christian values, excellence in learning and quality relationships to enable students to be outstanding citizens. Our College shall be a place where all...encounter the living God who in Jesus Christ reveals his transforming love and truth.

If you love netball, hockey, soccer or basketball because of the skill and speed of the game, then you will love Ultra Rip. Question: Do I need to come as part of a club or team? It would be great to have groups of players or clubs all come along together. But if you just come alone or with a friend we will put you in a team on the night. Question: How much does it cost to play? Women s Ultra Rip is FREE OF CHARGE!!! Just register by clicking on the link below and turn up on the night. 4 SPORTS continued from page 3 WHANGAREI BEARS (RUGBY) TRIALS - YEAR 7 & 8 AND UNDER 57KG PLAYERS Our first Open Development day was held on Sunday 8 th May at Marist Rugby Club. On Sunday 15 th May we will have our Bears trials, where we will select players from the Development day to trial out, then we will cut the squad down to 30 players. The trials and first training will be held at Kensington Park. Selected players take part in the Taniwha Cup which is held in Dargaville from 12 th - 16 th July (the first week of the second school holidays). Any questions or enquiries can contact Peter Pofaiva on SPORTS FUNDRAISING RAFFLE The Sports Department is fundraising to purchase new tracksuits for College sports teams. A recent funding application was unfortunately not successful. We will now be looking for a local business to assist us with sponsorship. They would have their name/logo (to be decided between parties involved) on the back of the tracksuit tops, so that their Company would be prominently advertised by travelling Pompallier players, tournament teams and volunteer student helpers. All players in Pompallier sports teams (Basketball, Football, Hockey & Netball) are being given tickets to sell either by Mrs Yorke at training, or perhaps their team Manager or Captain if they were absent at this time. Once tickets are sold the students should return the ticket butts and cash in the plastic bag provided to the College reception office please. PLEASE get around your neighbours, business areas or workplaces to get tickets sold. We hope to get this done very quickly so we can draw winners for the six prizes! (See flyer included in this newsletter). We are also going to offer students the option of purchasing their own tracksuit more details will follow. One of the most fascinating and perhaps scary discoveries was the knowledge of gross, health destroying additives in our foods. You can check this out yourself by purchasing an app called Chemical Maze or simply snap these evil numbers and check out the food packets you purchase especially if you experience seemingly unexplainable health issues/concerns. Bad E numbers are: Johanna Luiten-Parker TIC HEALTH TOTARA GROVE SCHOOL 50th Jubilee Celebrations Friday 3 & Saturday 4 June, 2016 Registration forms are available on our website or by contacting the school on , or event@totaragrove.school.nz. Registrations close on 20 th May Please pass this information on to anyone who may be interested. PAST PUPIL UPDATE... There was a recent article in the local paper about the visiting Navy ship Rotoiti. The article focused on a former Whangarei boy and Pompallier student, Sean Kerwick, who is a warfare officer on the ship. It is always wonderful for staff and students to see read about what our former students are doing, and see them working hard to achieve their dreams. For the full story, click here. BUS PASSES... If your child loses their pass, they can apply for a replacement by paying $6.00 to the College office. A temporary bus pass will be issued, and a new pass will be ordered for them. As these are printed off-site, this can take a few days. Page 4
