1 Volume 35, Issue 2 February 2018 Prez Sez The club held one of its most important meetings this last month. The annual budget meeting establishes the clubs financial plan for the next year including projecting revenues and determining budgets for various events. There is often much debate and discussion around how the club will utilize monies. Some of my personal highlights from the meeting included: a five year commitment to stocking leech lake fish, funding for musky research, money allotted for a high school scholarship, funding for the youth event, and some money set aside for a new project involving weed control at Olbrick and Olin boat landings. Our budget reflects the generosity of club members, so I would like to extend a big THANK YOU! If you have any specific questions about the budget please contact me or our treasurer April Cook. Someone recently asked me if I ice fish and I replied no. I am somewhat intrigued by the process, but generally enjoy some time off from fishing during the winter months. It gives me a chance to catch up on some honey dos that I avoided during the spring, summer and fall months. However, I can still get my musky fix by going to various events and musky shows. The club has a number of upcoming events such as the annual awards ceremony on February 12 th. On March 17 th, Waunakee high school will host our annual musky school, which is a great opportunity to take notes with some of the best sticks around. The school is offering a class on using your electronics that I hope to attend. On April 21 st our annual fundraiser will feature speaker Mike Keyes. This is one of the biggest fundraisers of the year, so please plan on attending. In addition, there are musky shows in Milwaukee and Wausau and the Wisconsin Fishing Expo here in Madison. Come out to see our booth at these shows, or plan on attending the Wisconsin fishing expo for chance to win a ranger boat and to score some gently used baits at the Clubs garage sale. We need some help manning these booths, so if you can help that would be great. For me, attending these types of events or shows makes the winter months go by quickly and serves as a way of preparing for the upcoming season. Please note, that the monthly meeting in March has been moved to the first Monday March 5 th. The speaker is Rick Krueger. Rick, who specialized in underwater diving, has a plethora of information about the lakes from a unique underwater perspective. As always, see our website or the newsletters for upcoming events or to sign up for the musky school. Finally, GO make some memories. 8 The Waunakee High School Fishing Club announced that they will be conducting a fund raiser to help with the Take A Vet Fishing event on Lake Waubesa in June. They want as many people as possible to come to the Waun-A-Bowl and take advantage of the 50/50 Raffle, Bucket Raffles, Meat Raffle, $2.00 bowling (includes shoes bring the kids), and some food/drink specials. The Fishing Club members are also looking for businesses, organizations and individuals who are willing to make a donation of money, merchandise, or gift/discount cards. 9 Garage Sale Items Needed CCMI will again have a presence at the Wisconsin Fishing Expo in February We have information on the club, the musky school, and the annual seminar. We also use this as a fundraising opportunity by having a garage sale of lures and tackle donated by our members. If you have any lures you would like to donate to our club for this garage sale, you can bring them to a general meeting and deliver them to Tony Enger. 10 14th Annual Iowa Hawg Hunt Outing-Saturday April 14, :00 a.m. 6:00 p.m. OPEN TO PUBLIC - EVERYONE IS WELCOME You don t have to be a member of Muskies Inc. Join the fun at the 14 TH Iowa Hawg Hunt. At the Pleasant Creek Recreation Area located 15 miles Northwest of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. See: Urbana Inn (Formerly Super 8) in Urbana, Iowa at is offering a discount for rooms and is not far away from the lake (mention muskie outing). Rules: Eligible fish must be caught between 8:00 a.m.- 6:00 p.m. on 4/14. A witness is required (another outing participant is o.k.) and a photograph is required. Fish entries including photos must be submitted to Geoff Crandall before 7:00 p.m. Eligible waters are waters within the Pleasant Creek State Recreation Area. Must comply with all IDNR regulations. Catch & release only, live bait is permitted, no transporting of muskies & measured to the ¼ inch, 30 muskies or longer are eligible for an award. To be eligible for the non-cash prizes your fee must be paid & received prior to the start of the outing. Award certificates will be given for: 1) Longest Muskie & 2) Second Largest Muskie. (Winners may win only one category). Awards banquet will be held at the Urbana Inn at 7:00 p.m. and the additional meal cost is $10 per person. $10 to participate in optional contest + $10 for meal = $20 p/person to do both.
