Troy Sears, Next Level Sailing, is making a West Coast tour with the yacht to give the opportunity for enthusiasts old and new to tour the vessel and take a sunset ride. According to Tony Sears, the tour is not just about promoting the America s Cup, but it s also about generating greater interest and awareness among today s youth. We re looking forward to welcoming young minds aboard America to explore the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM disciplines) that have always been an integral part of America s Cup racing. Kevin Bryant, Harbormaster, reported that the event was well attended. Although the ship was scheduled to leave in the morning, they stayed into the afternoon to accommodate the visitors. Walter Chuck will be serving as President, Ken Brown as Vice-President, and David Jincks as Secretary/ Treasurer. The Commission has been busy, meeting at several work sessions in addition to their regular meetings, addressing such issues as the Rogue expansion proposal and the development of McClean Point. The Bent Brick Restaurant of Portland took home the grand prize in the professional division in the 2015 edition of The Great Albacore Tuna BBQ Challenge Saturday at the Port of Newport. Chef Ryan Mead took home the top prize over Homegrown Public House and Chef Kelsey Terry of Florence. People s Choice Award went to Hook, Line and Sinker s Chef Beatrice Kemp of Tualatin. In the amateur division, Black Bee BBQ, a local team headed by Wil & Sarah Black won the title with last year s champion Tuna Trolls with Jason & Katie Phillips and crew finishing second. The People s Choice Award was won by Lorna Davis of the Greater Newport Chamber of Commerce. The event was a sell out for the second year in a row and was a presentation of the Port of Newport and the Oregon Albacore Commission benefiting the Newport Food Pantry and Operation Snackpacks emergency food programs for the city. Port Commission President Walter Chuck presents a check to Jim Myers for the Newport Food Bank, donating the proceeds from the boat launches related to The Great Albacore Tuna BBQ Challenge 2

4 PROFILE OF PORT EMPLOYEE JIM DURKEE Jim began working for the Port of Newport in October of 2003 at the commercial marina in maintenance and operations. I did some jobs at the port while I was working Century Lighting and I loved the environment. Who wouldn t? When a job opening came up, I jumped at it. Jim replaced Ron Smith as the Terminal Operations Supervisor in He enjoys working with the commercial fishing fleet to get them ready for whichever fishery opens next. The guys in the fishing fleet have really made me feel appreciated. In September, Jim took over as NOAA Facilities Manager, a position which was vacated when Rick Fuller moved to Director of Operations. Jim was born In Brisbane, Australia, but he spent most of his early life in the mountains west of Denver, Colorado. Before moving to the coast, he went to the University of Colorado, Joined the Marine Corps and worked in the steel industry. Jim has been married to his wife Mary for 22 years. They enjoy taking road trips all over the western U.S. and Canada. That was how they first came to the Oregon coast. We liked it so much we just kept coming back. Jim and Mary live in Waldport with their dog and travelling companion, Graysea. Let me introduce myself, I m Karen, the new Administrative Assistant at the Port. This is my first issue of the Port and Starboard; I look forward to putting together many more. As of June, I am new to the area: new to the Port, new to Newport, new to Oregon, and new to the Pacific Ocean! I have lived on the East Coast all my life, but I am looking forward to making my home here with my husband, daughter and son-in-law, grandson and grandson on the way. 7 International Terminal TERMINAL FACILITY SUPERVISOR Pete Zerr has joined the Port as the Terminal Facility Supervisor. Pete comes with twenty-four years experience in the maritime industry and a degree in marine engineering from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. He has worked as Marine Superintendent and Port Engineer in California and Oregon, served as the Marine Operations Supervisor at HMSC and most recently, and was Interim Director and Marine Superintendent at the Seward Marine Center Alaska campus. A resident of Newport, Pete says he is excited to be working with the Port of Newport and serving the needs of the International Terminal operations. National Marine Fisheries Service, a part of NOAA, completed their first fish survey for the year out of Newport. They lease private commercial fishing vessels to help them with that work. F/V Last Straw and F/V Excalibur unloaded the survey gear and switched back over to other fisheries. F/V Noah s Ark and F/V Ms. Julie will load up for round two of the survey work. F/V Perseverance returned from Alaska (Pictured). Devin Whaley ran the crane for them, stripping their gear to help them hurry up and get ready for Pacific Whiting fishing. The rest of the fleet has been keeping the dock busy with repairs and fuel stops. Trident Seafood s meal plant is busy processing Whiting and has had a steady stream of trucks running in and out. We have had a full dock recently, with a few vessels doubled up (rafted outboard). The Port had to turn down a request for a 200 foot Trident vessel that wanted to fuel, because we are out of space. Most of these vessels are in because the fishing has not been productive. Also, we had a site visit from two personnel from the U.S. Coast Guard Portland Office of the Waterways Management/Facilities Division to review our Facilities Security Plan. Way to Go Commercial Fleet! NOAA S September, 2015 report Fisheries of the United States 2014 shows Newport as 1st on the West Coast, lower 48, in quantity at 124M lbs., and 2nd in value at $53M. Of the nation s top 10 ports, 5 are in Alaska, some of whose catch finds its way into Newport for processing through the International Terminal. 7
