7 Fishing Report What s Biting And Where? By Arizona Game And Fish Department Continued from page 1 Tip of the week Are you a beginning angler? We all started somewhere! Fishing action really takes off during the spring, so now s a prefect time to study up! Good news: storms and run-off are still saturating the state and increasing flowing into many of our waters. One example: As of Thursday, the releases out of Horseshoe Dam were up to 1,500 cfs. Already muddy Bartlett Lake already has risen to 47-percent full. Once a sunny and calm stretch of weather comes, warmer water should put warmwater fish such as largemouth bass in a better mood. Until then, remember that trout fishing in desert regions remains a great option. We are stocking Community Fishing Program waters thoroughly with trout (expansion waters are being stocked this week). The online chatter from some anglers is that fishing s downright difficult right now. Some are saying this is one of the coldest winters we ve experienced in about 5 years. Water temperatures at Bartlett this week jumped back down to 51 degrees. So don t feel bad if you re not having luck. Fishing will pick up soon. Now looking forward to spring bass fishing. As experienced anglers know, bass tend to spawn earlier at western Arizona impoundments such as Lake Havasu and Alamo Lake than at the rest of the state because these large, solunar bowls warm up early and quickly. At Havasu, the average water temp has been around 54 degrees. See that report. Look to the March 20 full moon as a time when there might be a major wave of spawning activity. As always, if you re considering heading to the high country, check the Arizona Department of Transportation website for the latest road conditions. This week s scheduled stockings Rainbow trout: Patagonia Lake Fain Lake Watson Lake Verde River-Middle Community expansion waters Upcoming Fishing Events: What: Just for Kids Fishing Festival When: Saturday, Feb. 23, 2019, 8 a.m.-noon Where: Kiwanis Park, 5500 S. 11 Rescue Dogs Of The Week Animal Care & Control Volunteers Advocate For Those Looking For A Home By Pinal County Animal Care and Control Animal Care And Control Picks of the Week Big Sister (A211151) I am head over heels for this sweet baby bear cub. She is absolutely terrified in the kennel and outside. She let me enter the kennel to leash her up, but was frozen in place once we started passing all the dogs on the way outside. I took her into one of the enclosures and she sat in the corner against the fence and laid down shaking. She let me approach and pet her she didn t get aggressive at all but she didn t come closer or smell me at all. Eventually I got her to go for a walk outside and she started to loosen up. She flopped into some plants to lay down, but she did ultimately follow my prompts to walk more. By the end of the walk she was getting some smells and was slightly more inquisitive. She went back into the kennel easily and snuggled in with her kennel-mate. Daiquiri (A203612) Daiquiri was such a delight!! She was very well tempered and very well mannered. She didn t pull on the leash at all and just wanted to cruise and explore. She was easy to get in and out of the kennel and didn t react to the other dogs going wild when she walked by. If you d like to meet either of these sweet dogs, come down to the shelter or give us a call at Pinal Animal Care And Control 1150 S Eleven Mile Corner Rd Casa Grande, Arizona AnimalCare@pinalcountyaz.gov.STT Pg. 11
12 Road Work & Travel Advisory Important Commuter Updates By San Tan Times Staff & Local Towns Continued from page 1 San Tan Valley Hunt Highway Phase & Gantzel Road Improvements Project UPDATE. Hunt Highway Project is entering Phase 7 of the planned road work. Phase 7 is scheduled to run through the end of April of As part of the work on the east side of Hunt Highway, crews are constructing a box culvert under the driveway/roadway at the entry to Shops at Copper Basin, with the driveway to Shops at Copper Basin closed for this work. This work is nearing completion and once complete, the driveway will be reopened and similar work will take place at Quartzite Road. Quartzite Road will be closed for this work with no access to or from Hunt Highway, currently scheduled to begin Friday, February 15 and last through March 25. This work was originally scheduled to begin February 10; however, recent rains shifted this date slightly. The original schedule called for this portion of the project to run through February 27. But, rain has delayed the project so we anticipate this closure going beyond the original scheduled end date. In addition, crews are working to construct a box culvert under Copper Mine Road. This work is taking place one-half the road at a time so that one lane of traffic in each direction can be maintained on Copper Mine Road. As a reminder, speeds have been reduced through the work zone (25 mph) for the safety of nearby residents, travelers, and construction crews. Please obey traffic signage as it is placed for your safety. Business and resident access is being maintained, and we thank you for your continued patience during this construction.
