Passage options for climbing lamprey: If you build it they will come Kinsey Frick, Steve Corbett, Mike Hanks, Mary Moser Northwest Fisheries Science Center, NOAA Fisheries

Lampreys and barriers to migration Sea lamprey (Petromyzon marinus) Pouched lamprey (Geotria australis) European brook lamprey (Lampetra planeri)

PNW fish ladders are built for SALMON

Pacific lamprey (Entosphenus tridentatus) also need to pass the dams

Improving lamprey migration success at barriers Velocity reduction Lamprey-friendly structural modifications Lamprey-specific fishways

Taking advantage of Pacific lamprey climbing ability

Could we use lamprey behavior and vertical climbing ability at Bonneville?

Wetted Wall Climbing Structure Overflow supply Sidewelling supply pan 15 cm 50 cm exit: 10 cm crest Upwelling supply 1.6 m wall 50 cm

Experimental Design 3 ways of supplying water: Overflow Sidewell Upwell 3 flow levels per type Upwell Low Overflow High Cascading volume (gpm) Overflow Sidewell Upwell Low Medium High

Experimental Design Lamprey individually marked 2.5 hours per trial Up to 8 individuals simultaneously, until 10 total had interacted with the wall Response variables: First wall touch Time to crest Time out exit Number of attempts Upwell Low Overflow High

Results: Wall touch to Exit 120 Overflow Overflow 120 Sidewell Sidewell 120 Upwell Upwell Time (mins) 60 Time (mins) 60 Time (mins) b a 0 Low initial-exit Medium initial-exit High initial-exit Low final-exit Medium final-exit High final-exit 0 Low initial-exit Medium initial-exit High initial-exit Low final-exit Medium final-exit High final-exit 0 Low initial-exit Medium initial-exit High initial-exit Low final-exit Medium final-exit High final-exit N

Time spent vertical vs. in the pan 100% 90% 80% Proportion of time Proportion of time 70% 60% 50% 40% 30% Pan Wall 20% 10% 0% Low Medium High Low Medium High Low Medium High Overflow Sidewell Upwell Overflow Sidewell Upwell Flow treatment Flow Treatment

Experiment conclusions Pacific lamprey climb and exit at all tested flow levels. Recommend for field testing: sidewelling water supply of 6-20 gpm. Great potential for field applications.

Lessons Learned 1:20 1:00 y = 5E-05x R² = , P<0.01 Lengthen the pan to ease passage for larger fish. Time in pan (hh:mm) 0:40 0:20 0: Weight (g)

Lessons Learned Lengthen the pan to improve ease of passage for larger fish.

Lamprey climbing relating to barrier passage Understand species behavior and abilities Engineering lamprey-specific designs are key to success

Thanks to: Jeff Moser, Galen Wolf (OA) Bill Wassard (NOAA Fisheries, Pasco Research Station) Sean Tackley, Nathan Zorich, Andy Traylor, Ida Royer, Ben Hausmann, Brian Bissell (USACE)
