Figure 22. Map of ocean related share of GDP in counties of the North and Middle Atlantic coastal regions in This map shows the share of ocean related GDP (value added economic activity) in 2009 for counties within the North and Middle Atlantic coastal regions of the U.S. The share of ocean related GDP in the lightest shaded counties was less than 5 percent; the next darkest shading designates counties with an ocean related GDP share of 5 percent to less than 13 percent, followed by a share of 13 to less than 30 percent in the next darker shade. There were no counties in the two regions with an ocean related GDP that exceeded 30 percent of the total economy.
Figure 23. Map of ocean related share of employment in counties of the north and middle Atlantic coast regions in This map shows the share of ocean related employment in 2009 for counties within the North and Middle Atlantic coastal regions of the U.S. Darker shading represents higher shares of ocean related employment. The lightest shade designates counties with less than 5 percent oceanrelated employment, followed by successively darker shades representing 5 to less than 15 percent, 15 to less than 30 percent, and 30 percent or greater. Higher shares of ocean related employment typically are associated with the presence of tourism and recreational industries.
Figure 24. Map of the share of direct ocean related GDP in counties of the South Atlantic coastal region in This map shows the share of ocean related GDP (valued added economic activity) in 2009 for counties within the South Atlantic coastal region of the U.S.
Figure 25. Map of ocean related share of employment in counties of the south Atlantic coast region in This map shows the share of ocean related employment in 2009 for counties within the South Atlantic coastal region of the U.S. Darker shading represents higher shares of ocean related employment. The lightest shade designates counties with less than 5 percent ocean related employment, followed by successively darker shades representing 5 to less than 15 percent, 15 to less than 30 percent, and 30 percent or greater.
Figure 26. Map of ocean related share of GDP in counties of the Gulf of Mexico coast region in This map shows the share of ocean related GDP (valued added economic activity) in 2009 for counties within the East and West Gulf of Mexico regions of the U.S. The share of ocean related GDP in the lightest shaded counties was less than 5 percent; the next darkest shading designates counties with an ocean related GDP share of 5 percent to less than 13 percent, followed by a share of 13 to less than 30 percent in the next darker shade. Counties shaded dark blue had an ocean related GDP share of 30 percent or more. Those counties with the largest share of oceanrelated GDP include Vermilion and Plaquemines, Louisiana and Refugio, Texas. Ocean related sectors in Louisiana and Texas are dominated by minerals and mining activities.
Figure 27. Map of ocean related share of employment in counties of the Gulf of Mexico coast region in This map shows the share of ocean related employment in 2009 for counties within the East and West Gulf of Mexico regions of the U.S. Darker shading represents higher shares of ocean related employment. The lightest shade designates counties with less than 5 percent ocean related employment, followed by successively darker shades representing 5 to less than 15 percent, 15 to less than 30 percent, and 30 percent or greater. The geographic distribution of ocean related employment within the Gulf of Mexico closely follows that of GDP.
Figure 28. Map of ocean related share of GDP in counties of the Pacific coast region in This map shows the share of ocean related GDP (valued added economic activity) in 2009 for counties in California and within the Pacific Northwest region of the U.S. The share of ocean related GDP for all counties on the Pacific coast was less than 13 percent, with the exception of Kitsap, Washington that is home to a large boat and ship building industry, which had a GPD of 18.4 percent. The lightest shaded counties had an ocean related share of GDP of less than 5 percent. Counties with an ocean GDP share of 5 to less than 13 percent are represented by the next darkest shade.
Figure 29. Map of ocean related share of employment in counties of the Pacific coast region in This map shows the share of ocean related employment in 2009 for counties in California and within the Northwest Pacific coastal region of the U.S. The geographic distribution of the share of ocean related employment for most Pacific coast counties is similar to that of GDP. The share of ocean related employment was generally greater than that of GDP because of the greater role of tourism and recreation industries in the regional economy.
Figure 30. Map of ocean related share of GDP in counties of the Great Lakes coast region in This map shows the share of ocean related GDP (valued added economic activity) in 2009 for counties in the eastern and western Great Lakes coastal regions of the U.S. Ocean related industries comprise less than 5 percent of GDP in most counties within these two regions. Notable exceptions are seasonal tourist destinations such as Mackinac and Keweenau, Michigan, both of which have state or national parks. Tourism and recreation dominate ocean related activities in Michigan, as well as throughout both Great Lakes regions.
Figure 31. Map of ocean related share of employment in counties of the Great Lakes coast region in This map shows the share of ocean related employment in 2009 for counties in the eastern and western Great Lakes coastal regions of the U.S. A significant number of counties in the two regions have from 5 to less than 15 percent employment in their ocean sector, of which more than 80 percent is in the tourism and recreation industries. As with GDP, the most concentrated area of ocean related employment is in Keweenau, Michigan
Figure 32. Map of share of ocean related GDP in boroughs and census areas of the Alaska coastal region in This map shows the share of ocean related GDP (valued added economic activity) in 2009 for boroughs and census areas in Alaska. Alaska s ocean related economy is dominated by minerals and mining, particularly in the north, and by tourism and recreation, most of which occurs in the southern part of the State. The fishing port of Bristol Bay is the one borough with more than 30 percent of its GDP from ocean related activities.
Figure 33. Map of the ocean related share of employment in counties of the Alaska coast region in This map shows the share of ocean related employment in 2009 in Alaska s boroughs and census areas. The North Slope is dominated by oil production, while most jobs in the Aleutians West and Bristol Bay are fishing related. The ocean economy surrounding Anchorage is predominantly tourism and recreation. Valdez Cordova is more diverse and has a significant share of ocean related employment from living resources, minerals, and, tourism and recreation.
Figure 34. Map of ocean related share of GDP in counties of the Hawaii coast region in This map shows the share of ocean related GDP (valued added economic activity) in 2009 for the Hawaiian Islands. Over ninety percent of the State s ocean related GDP is generated by its tourism and recreation industries. The ocean related share of GDP on the islands of Kauai and Maui exceeds 13 percent.
Figure 35. Map of ocean related share of employment in counties of the Hawaii coast region in This map shows the share of ocean related employment in 2009 for the Hawaiian Islands. The ocean sector captures the largest share of total employment on the island of Kauai. The smallest share of ocean related employment takes place on Oahu (Honolulu), although more people are employed in ocean related jobs here than on any of the other Hawaiian island.
