A lot has happened at the Club since I wrote you last. We held our Annual Business Meeting March 20 th. If you weren t able to make the presentation, the Board of Directors and Club Management reflected on 2017 and forecasted ahead to 2018, taking questions from the audience. It was my primary goal to ensure our membership understands just how diligent the Board has been with our Long Range Plan and accomplishing our Master Plan projects on time and within budget. As you know, we have some expensive projects to plan for: irrigation system overhaul; greens renovation; and bunker renovation. Additionally, we have several other necessary projects along the way, such as cart path repair, and tennis / pickleball court repair. Even more, we just never know when an unforeseen problem will arise. Inasmuch, the Board has carefully put a plan in place to accomplish these capital goals with minimal financial impact to our members. Capital Fees: I announced that the Board had voted to initiate a $10 capital fee increase (for all golf members) beginning in April. The capital fee increase was approved by last year s Board as part of the 2018 budget. However, rather than initiate the increase in January, we chose to wait until completion of the two Master Plan sessions and Annual Business presentation so we could explain to our members the reasons for the change. I think nearly everyone in attendance at these meetings understood the need for more capital, and further recognized how conservative the Board has been with dues and price increases over the years. I promise to our membership that the Board and Management will continue to be good stewards of your resources. Club President s Drink of the Year: Now, to offset the announcement of a capital fee increase, I want to tell you about something new that I hope becomes a Cowan s Ford tradition. If you haven t heard, the Club is offering the President s Drink of the Year, a $3.00 Tito s Vodka drink of your choice. As long as the Club is open Tito s Vodka cocktails are Three bucks! Some of you have expressed your eternal gratitude, while others have (re) considered making vodka their preferred beverage. Nonetheless, this is something fun that we can offer our members, and I m looking forward to seeing just how much Tito s we run through as the year goes on (from an economic, supply and demand standpoint, of course). Bylaws: The Board hopes to have a modest bylaws change to present to our membership by the next time I write you. This change revolves around permitting spouses the privilege to run for the Board of Directors without the need to convert the membership. This change is not controversial; rather we intend to correct some ill-thought provisions that yield only negative collateral results.

2 President continued Text Messages: The Club now has text messaging services to help keep our membership informed. You re missing out if you haven t signed up. Not only do our members get to choose what types of events and information they want to be alerted on, but it s the absolute quickest and most efficient way to know what s going on. You ll get reminders on upcoming events, noticed of cancellations, and we can announce weather delays and other breaking news through this system. If you don t want to sign up for yourself, sign up for the Club s overall benefit. To cite just one example, imagine how much more efficient it is to send one text regarding a frost delay as opposed to fielding dozens of phone calls. Our text messaging service goes with meeting our goal to improve and modernize Club communication systems, and become altogether more efficient. Finally, with spring, comes the Golf Season (thank goodness)! Dogfight Thursdays are back. The Masters is going on right now. Club tournaments and competition are upon us. The Ladies Member-Member, and the MGA two-man matches take place later this month. Also, I m happy to share that the Men s Golf Association is committed to working with the Board, and Tournament Chair John Gary on this year s men s events especially the Member-Guest. If you haven t flagged your calendar yet sign up opens April 5 th at the dogfight (the first day of the Masters), and the tournament will be held May All involved have placed an emphasis on setting a new standard with this year s Member-Guest. Thanks to all of you for your continued support. Let me hear from you if you have questions or suggestions. Together we can ensure you have the best experience possible at Cowan s Ford. Cheers! Green Committee Ray Chandler As you are aware, the Master Plan is completed. The three major projects, irrigation system, bunker renovation and green renovation are scheduled to begin with the irrigation system in The other two will start at a later date. In the meantime, there are smaller projects built into the plan. Plan work to be done in 2018 follows: Remove the forward bunker at #8 green. This will be done for the most part with in house resources. Improve drainage between #2 and #1 fairways. We will remove several trees and sod areas to prevent silt washing into the creek. This will be done with in house resources. Native areas to be established in several selected areas around the golf course. Drainage work around #11 green. We will contract this work. The drainage pipe under the cart path will be enlarged and extended behind the green as appropriate. This will prevent water overflow from moving both in front of and behind the green. In addition, the gravel road to the nursery green will be reshaped in order for the ditches to adequately carry the water. In addition, we will identify areas for cart path repair. Some cart path damage comes from age and wear but most comes from tree roots. Both asphalt and concrete paths are damaged by tree roots. We plan to evaluate the process of root pruning and if appropriate, incorporate on our course. As you can see, considerable work is proposed this year in an effort to enhance playability for our members. In the meantime, enjoy spring weather and your round of golf. Page 2
