The squad's scoring average has improved dramatically in recent campaigns, leading to record-setting efforts on a near weekly basis. Each of the last three years a Bronco player has been named to the Academic All-MAC Team and others have also claimed accolades for their efforts academically. Competitively, the Broncos have upgraded their schedule and are competing in some of the nation's top events on a regular basis. 20 THE MOORS GOLF CLUB The Moors Golf Club in Portage, Mich., serves as Western Michigan s home course for the seventh-consecutive season. The club is located off Highway 131, three miles south of Interstate 94 on Centre Street, a half-mile east of Highway 131. The course is located adjacent to the exclusive Woodbridge Hills community. The Moors par-72 championship course spans 6,727 yards with a United States Golf Association (USGA) rating of The course is interwoven through woods, water and wetlands. There are approximately 80 sand traps on the course, some being natural link-style bunkers reminiscent of a Scottish course. The trees, fairways and greens all consist of the finest bentgrass. The signature 15th hole, a par three, features, a green totally surrounded by water and is accessible only by a foot bridge. The four closing holes are known as the Cussin Corners. Built in 1979 and designed by renowned architect Arthur Hills, The Moors has been rated one of Michigan s premier layouts by Golf Digest. WMU is fortunate to call the Moors Golf Club home. No. 12 Par 5 20 EAST/WEST RIO VERDE COLLEGIATE INVITATIONAL Western Michigan golf has hosted at least one event in each of the seven seasons the program has been in existence. It began with a Bronco Triangular in the spring of 1999, an event WMU captured with a score of 375. It has built from that point, as has the Western Michigan women s golf program. This year, as in 2003 and 2004, the Brown & Gold will host two events during the 2006 spring schedule. The first will be fourth annual East/West Rio Verde Collegiate Invitational. The name has been modified a little but the quality of course and field remains the same. Western will host a field of the nation s top programs at the Rio Verde Country Club in Rio Verde, Ariz., on March 2-4. The Broncos claimed the inaugural title in 2003, besting the field of 11 with a team score of 614. Erica Bieniek had the season s best 18-hole (70) and 36-hole (144) individual performance during the event. WMU finished fifth the following year and ninth last season. The field has grown from 11 in the first year of existence to 18 last year. It is a true testament to the progress of the Western Michigan women s golf program since its inception in Head coach Cindy Trout, the program s only head coach, and her team have proven the ability to compete at some of the top tournaments in collegiate golf as well as host first class events of their own. This tournament is really turing into one of the premier Division I women s golf events of the spring. The community of Rio Verde and the club staff welcome us with open arms each year. Bronco head coach Cindy Trout. It is an awesome tournament to be a part of and the best we play all year. It isn t just the course, it is the entire atmosphere. It is the players, the parents, it is everything. I couldn t think of a better place for a spring trip. Bronco senior Jenna Walter Not to sound biased but It is truly the best tournament I have ever been to in my career. The community and everyone involved is very welcoming. The first time I ever saw mountains, was my first year there. I can t wait to go back. Bronco senior Caitlan Roschek
