A TWO BALL DRAW WILL TAKE PLACE, ALLOWING PEOPLE TO CHOOSE WHOM THEY PLAY WITH. HOWEVER, EACH TWO BALL ENTERED WILL BE DRAWN AGAINST OTHER TWO BALL PAIRINGS. THE COMPETITION IS INDIVIDUAL POINTS STABLEFORD. This week s article is PITCH MARKS Ball marks - also called pitch marks - are the bane of smooth-putting & healthy greens on golf courses all over the world. They're the little depressions, or craters, made when a golf ball descends from the sky & impacts the putting surface. (Most golfers think they don t make them) Repairing ball marks isn't just important for the health of the greens, and for smooth-rolling putts, it s also a matter of golf etiquette. It is our obligation to help take care of the golf courses we play & repairing ball marks is a big part of that obligation to the game. Repairing those little depressions is very important. Equally important is doing it the right way, because, while many golfers fail to repair ball marks & shame on you if you re one of them - there are also many well-meaning golfers who do "repair" the pitch marks, only to do so incorrectly. A ball mark can cause the grass in the depression to die, leaving not just a scar, but also a pit in the putting surface that can knock well-struck putts offline. Repairing a ball mark correctly restores a smooth surface & helps keep the grass healthy. Studies have shown that, on average, a golfer will make 8 pitch marks during a round of golf. If 130 rounds are played per day, that s over 1,000 pitch marks made per week. No surprise then that it can be difficult to hole a putt. A correctly repaired pitch mark will recover in 24 hours. An unrepaired pitch mark left, unattended for two hours will take up to two months to recover. Unrepaired pitch marks also foster disease & infections in the green. When it comes to repairing pitch marks there is a right way to repair that really aids their recovery. In summary, you should take your ball mark repair tool & insert the prongs into the turf at the edge of the depression. Do NOT insert the prongs into the depression itself, but at the rim of the depression. Then push the edge of the ball mark toward the centre, all the way around using your ball mark repair tool. Do not insert & attempt to push up the depression as this only leads to tearing the root and killing the grass. So, golfers, let's all start fixing our ball marks and doing it the right way. If you have a moment and if there isn't another group of golfers waiting behind you - fix one or two other ball marks, too PLEASE! Thanks, Mike
