Ed Reilly hosted the ceremony by the flagpole. Lynn Bateman, with her lovely voice, led all present singing the national anthem. Boy Scouts Troop 388 presented and raised the new American and MIA/POW Flags donated by the Conservation Club. Celebration continued in the Meeting Hall as Ed read the tribute prepared by Deon Munro. The reading centered on a table dressed with items that were symbolic of the courage and sacrifice made by our armed forces in war, and their effect upon those who loved them. Names of the departed and of current resident veterans were read by Paul Cohen, Scott Munro and Charles Haymore. At the end of the roll call, veterans who were present stood to receive heartfelt applause. Refreshments were prepared by members of the Recreation Committee under Jennifer Haymore, Chairman s leadership. Don Madsen, a Rec. Council member, added his homemade pies to the Stars and Stripes Flag cake. Nick Blaney played memory lane tunes while guests mixed and chatted. It was a memorable affair. Submitted by Elsie Wu, Rec. Council Secretary Approved by Jennifer Haymore, Rec. Council Chair Pg. 1

4 A week or so ago I changed our holiday tour date from December 13 to December 9 for reasons I thought were important at the time, only to be beset with the slings and arrows of irritated club members. Having since eaten crow over my actions, I have now rebooked the trip for Sunday December 13. I apologize to the club and to whoever else might was affected and hereby promise that I will not do this again without getting the club s approval. So, on December 13 we are slated to travel south to the Lawrence Welk Resort to enjoy a delicious lunch and attend a classic holiday musical in the Welk Resort Theater. The show we selected is the holiday classic, Meet Me In St. Louis. Based on the 1944 motion picture of the same name, this musical is about a family living in St. Louis on the eve of the 1904 World s Fair. This musical had long, successful runs on Broadway, off-broadway and in England. The cost for this fun day of a delicious luncheon and musical nostalgia will be $ pre-paid due now. In light of what happened in November, we ask that if you sign up for this trip, please do so with a genuine intent of going. The signup sheet is on the board in the Clubhouse. See you on the bus. Going through the new Main Street catalog that has just come out, one outing seems like a winner for January. It s a comedy entitled You Can t Take It With You. It s a classic. Do you remember it? Thoroughly delightful, this golden oldie will be playing at the Glendale Center Theater. I must tell you that we have come to respect the shows at the Glendale Center Theater. This show urges us to be unconventional, live large, and have fun. Even with the all too predictable reconciliations at the end, the play has always been a hoot. I can pretty well guarantee that we will leave the theater with smiles on our faces. Judging by what my TV Guide provides for our viewing pleasure these days, this says a lot. And of course, that s not all; We will be having lunch at the Tam O Shanter restaurant. The show date is Saturday, January 9, It is a Matinee. The cost for this day of fun and good food is $88.00 for passengers or $ if we have folks. The signup sheet for this trip is on the board in the Clubhouse. Questions? Call Ed Reilly at (310) or Sharon Rose at (310) (From our cruising leader, Judy Foster) Travel is what inspires me to dream. Travel is not a luxury. It is a necessity. So come along on our April 16 cruise up the coast of California. Seven days of luxury and fun. Now is a busy time of the year, isn t it? Well, keep our upcoming cruise in the back of your mind and think of this as a Christmas present to yourself. Put those quarters and dollars in a sock and dream of cruising with the Travel Club. Costs as low as $100 a day, all inclusive can t beat that! 5 FIRE PREVENTION: Smokey the Bear says, Only you can prevent fires. Step One. Before a fire turns into a roaring blaze, you are best protected by good smoke detectors. Sixty percent of house fire deaths occur in homes with no working smoke alarms. Install smoke alarms throughout your home, but particularly inside bedrooms and anywhere you may nap. Purchase and install smoke detectors labeled by the Underwriters Laboratories (UL) or Factory Mutual (FM). Consider installing 10-year alarms. (I put them in all four of my units.) 10-year smoke alarms feature extended life batteries or power cells that provide long service without battery changes. First Alert model SA340 Smoke Alarm, for example, has three non-removable Lithium power cells sealed into the battery pack. Remove Hazards. The most effective way to protect your home is to identify and remove fire hazards. Some things to consider: Space Heaters Need Space. Keep portable and space heaters at least 3 feet from anything that may burn. Never leave heaters on when you leave home or go to sleep. Don t leave them unattended. Always keep grandchildren and pets away from them. Smokers Need To Be Extra Careful. Never smoke in bed or when you are sleepy. Carelessly discarded cigarettes are America s leading cause of fire deaths. Be Careful Cooking. Keep cooking areas clear of combustibles and wear short or tight-fitting sleeves. Keep pot handles turned inward so they don t over-hang the stove. If grease catches fire, carefully slide a lid over the pan and smother the flames, then turn off the burner. (Microwaves will be in an article to follow.) Matches and Lighters are Dangerous. In the hands of a visiting child, matches and lighters can be deadly! Store them where kids can't reach them, preferably in a locked area. Use Electricity Safely. If an appliance smokes or has an unusual smell, unplug and repair it. Replace frayed or cracked electrical cords and don't overload extension cords. Don t run them under rugs. Only use a heavy duty extension cord on a space heater. Be Careful of Halogen Lights. If you have halogen lights, make sure they are away from flammable drapes and low ceiling areas. Never leave them on when you leave home. Don't put anything over a lamp. Things thrown over a lamp (like blankets or clothing) could catch fire. Submitted by Judy Foster, Insurance Committee member CENTENARIAN CELEBRATED Friends from New Horizons helped Bobbi Schmidt celebrate her 100 th Birthday in October at the Elephant Bar -- a favorite of hers.
