Election News! As you all know we have been planning for the election of (7) new members to the Board of Directors which is due to take place at the Annual Meeting in March. In October we opened nominations and during the last 3 months we did indeed receive petitions from (7) Candidates. But because of Article 5.7 (pg. 11) of our Bylaws, Uncontested Elections, we don t have to actually vote on these candidates. When at the close of nominations, the number of qualified candidates nominated does not exceed the number of vacancies; the candidates may be declared elected without need for balloting and shall take their seats on the date set for the membership meeting. At the Annual Meeting we will seat these candidates and proceed with the selection of Officers and Committee Chairmen. Thank you to all those who have volunteered to serve on the Board during the term. They are alphabetically: Carl Aleccia, Bud Brown, Jennifer Haymore, Tom Kasterko Kathy Lindbergh, Robert Lombardi, Scott Munro. On January21 Board Meeting the Secretary announced that there were 8 nominees for the 2015 Election. In accordance with the New Horizons bylaws if the nominee exceeds the number of vacant seat, then it requires an election, In order to avoid lengthy and costly process of the election Jacob Aslay withdrew his name. 3 TORRANCE COMMISSIONER ON AGING People ask me, what s happening on the Commission on Aging. The Commission deals with the needs and issues confronting senior citizens in the community and provides a voice for senior citizens as a community group. The Commission has a direct liaison to the City Council. I serve with 6 other Commissioners and I was appointed a year ago by the Mayor and City Council to a 4year team. The Commission on Aging meets on the second Tuesday of each month, at 9:30am at the Bartlett Senior Citizens Center, 1318 Cravens Ave. (Downtown Torrance). All meeting are open to the public. The Agenda and Minutes are posted on the City of Torrance Home Page at At every meeting, we discuss Senior Citizens Concerns. Specifically, the topics are: City Council Activities; Housing, Health, Transportation, Community Programs, Focal Point Programs, and Elder Abuse/Fraud. It s been an honor to serve the great City of Torrance, and live in New Horizons, a model community for Senior Citizens. -Submitted by, Paul Cohen, Commissioner on Aging Conservation Club News Men s Wednesday Golf Results 1/21/2015 We invite all male golfers to join us on Wednesday morning for golf and friendship. 4 PREVENT FIRES - BE SAFE USING SMALL ELECTRICAL SPACE HEATERS During the cold spells many residents prefer to use small space heaters rather than the overhead grid to heat their condos. While these heaters do a good job of heating a small space they do present certain fire hazards so one must be vigilant when using them. 1. NEVER EVER GO TO SLEEP with a space heater on!!!! 2. DO NOT place them near fabric (drapes, bedding, sofas and chairs) which can heat up and burn. Feel the carpet underneath the heater to see if it is hot. 3. DO NOT LEAVE THEM ON FOR HOURS AND HOURS The directions usually recommend a short amount of time, turn them off, let them cool down and then turn them on again. DO NOT RUN FOR HOURS AT A TIME. 4. FEEL THE ELECTRICAL OUTLET YOU HAVE THE HEATER PLUGGED INTO. If its "HOT" turn the heater off. 5. DO NOT USE OLD HEATERS.life span of these space heaters is usually a year or two - then get a new one. Old ones have wires that can short out and spark up! Replace your heater according to manufacturer s directions. 6. NEVER EVER PLACE THEM NEAR WATER.. not near tubs/sinks etc. 7. DO NOT PLACE ON COUNTERS where they can fall into water or spark out on you and begin a fire. 8. KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE HEATER Do not place the heater in another room where you cannot see it. If a fire starts (and it has happened here) you will not see it until your whole room in engulfed!!!!!! -ByJoanie Jones, Insurance Chairman ***************************************** DOGS, CATS & Other PETS: Many condo associations do not permit pets. We are privileged to be allowed 2 dogs or 2 cats or 1 of each as well as fish and birds. One resident has a duck which I guess might qualify as a bird. However, in the past few months, residents out walking have reported being startled by unleashed barking dogs on upper decks and back patios. New Horizons has always prided itself as being a pleasant, friendly place to live. Pet owners should be considerate of other residents, and please do not make pets out of squirrels. They dig up potted plants and other areas looking for nuts they didn t plant there in the first place. -Margaret Stadvec, Secretary Condo Code Enforcement. TRAVEL CLUB NEWS for By Ed Reilly We have just returned from the Lawrence Welk Resort in Escondido where we enjoyed a delicious brunch and saw a terrific musical show. We have never been disappointed with any show we have seen there. All have been very professional and beautifully staged. This was readily apparent with the resort s current show, The King and I. Beautifully staged with simple, suggestive sets, the show was given it s classiness by the quality of the actors and the elaborate and beautiful costuming. It was a thoroughly enjoyable outing. In keeping with our decision to cut down on the number of trips we will be taking this year, our next outing will take place in March, on Tuesday, March 17 to be exact. March 17, for all you non Irish folks out there, is St. Patrick s Day. And tradition states that the day should be observed in grand style. That is precisely what we are going to do. Our day s salute begins as we don our outfits with touches of green and step aboard our coach in front of the clubhouse at 10:30 AM. Our coach will whisk us across town to beautiful downtown Burbank and the site of our Gaelic revelry, the beautiful Castaways Center. There we will be seated at reserved tables nicely arrayed for our upcoming feast. Several savory entrees await us including, of course that delicious Irish must have, corn beef and cabbage, done to perfection. After dessert, the tables will be cleared and we get ready to agree with our hosts that It s a Great Day For The Irish! This is always a fun day, a day when everyone is Irish. Our trip signup sheet is on the board and we welcome any and all. The cost, if we can muster 38 or more, will be $94.00 p.p. It will be ten dollars more for The price includes round trip motor coach transportation, the luncheon with entrée, salad, dessert, beverage, tax and tip and the afternoon variety show. It s a great way to celebrate the day. Do you enjoy traveling? If so, how about joining us? The Travel Club meets the first Thursday of every month at 7:00 PM in the Clubhouse. We always we conduct a little business, discuss new and upcoming trips, see a travel related film and enjoy a social hour with refreshments. It is a lot of fun. Our next meeting will take place on Thursday, February 5, 2015 at 7:00 PM in the clubhouse. If you would like additional information, please call Ed Reilly at (310) , or Sharon Rose at (310) Copyright 2015 New Horizons South Bay Association Page 4
