1 NEW HORIZONS WEEKLY NEWSLETTER The Official Publication for the Board of Directors, Residents and Owners WEBSITE: (see progress report below) July 12, 2013 E.MAIL: Maple Ave. Torrance CA Phone: (310) EDITOR: Jacob Aslay (Office) Fax # AD. MGR. : Paul Cohen (Office) ============================================================================================================================= ====== The Fourth of July Picnic was a huge success and lots of fun. There were so many grea t people who came with their families and they all seemed to have such a good time. The boat races were fun and a little challenging thanks to the wind conditions. The picnic was very enjoyable and everyone seemed to enjoy the HOT DOGS - they were delicious. The picnic would not have been so great if it wasn't for the incredible efforts of all of the volunteers. They put such hard work into everything that needed to be done to make the picnic run so smoothly. There are so many of them and I give a GREAT BIG THANK YOU!! We will do this again at Labor Day, September 2, 2013, which will be great too. Jeannie Rennhack Chairman, Recreation Council The progress continues. - from the Editor. Dear Readers, 1. THANK YOU The beauty of any community work is that just a couple hours availability a month, on to a determine flexible schedule, whether one we can will do publish worthwhile things along others. We here at the paper asked for your help, and now we have 2 volunteers for web administ-ration, and 3 volunteers for labeling our paper for delivery. HOWEVER; we still very much need proofreaders, reporters, columnists, "official" (or not-) photographers, article contributors. (Under half-page size is best.) 2. To make our website easier to reach, we've added a new web address using only the initials of our full name; 4 letters rather than 19. We are also expanding our website. Please comment, suggest. CONDO CODE INSPECTION Arlo Diane Creamer, Chairman The Condo Code Enforcement Committee will be inspecting ALL garage spaces, parking areas, patios & balconies in Area 6 during the month of July. If you reside in this area, please take a few minutes to review the New Horizons Rules & Regulations booklet, pages 6 through 9. Be advised, we will issue violation notices where necessary and possibly have illegally parked vehicles removed from the complex. All vehicles owned by residents MUST display an identification decal in the rear window. Any garage being used as a "storage area" is in violation if a vehicle cannot be contained within the space. Thank you for your consideration. IN MEMORIAM We are sad to announce that Lura Wallace passed away on June 23, She was a Latin teacher, and tutored many students in her retirement. Active in many organizations, she'll be missed by many. Our condolences to her son Larry, daughter Linda, and three grandchildren. Zelah Curry passed away on July 2, 2013, at the age of 94. She was an avid golfer and worked on the Newsletter for many years. She's had twelve nieces and nephews, and spent her last couple years in a board and care facility in Torrance. At her request, no services will be held. 1

2 TRAVEL CLUB UPDATE. 7/12/13 by: Ed Reilly, Club New Horizons Chairman Phone: Unfortunately, due to insufficient signups, we have had to cancel our July 18 trip to Pechanga Casino and the Wilson Creek Winery. Thus, since we haven t enough time to make other arrangements, we will not have any trip in July. We also had to cancel our July meeting, since the meeting occurred on Thursday, July 4. Please mark your calendars. No meeting at all in July. The next Travel Club meeting will be on Thursday, August 1. Our August trip is faring a little better, but we still need your support. On Saturday, August 10, we will be attending a special outdoor concert of the California Philharmonic Orchestra. This concert, called Festival on the Green, will take place at the beautiful Santa Anita Race Track, (and no, it has nothing to do with horses). I wouldn t be surprised if it doesn t turn out to be a highlight of the warm summer music season. We will have reserved table seating in the infield to enjoy the 7:30 pm performance of the Rodgers, Hammerstein and Gershwin concert. We understand from others who have done this trip last year that it is a lot of fun and certainly unique. This outdoor experience will be similar to going to the Hollywood Bowl. Just prior to the concert we will enjoy a boxed dinner from Boudin s Catering. (We ask that you select what sandwich entree you desire when you sign up. There are three entrée selections a Turkey Avocado sandwich, a Fra Mani artisan Ham and Brie sandwich, or a Roast Beef sandwich. You will find these offerings on the board beneath the trip signup sheet). The cost for this unusual picnic style concert trip, assuming we have at least 38 passengers, is $ This money is due now. You will find the signup sheet for this trip posted on the Clubhouse bulletin board. ************************************************ DISASTER MANAGEMENT TEAM MEETING On Thursday, July 18th at 1:30 pm in the Clubhouse Lounge. Please be sure to bring your Walkie-talkie phones to this meeting. We will be working on specific roles for the Area Directors and Search and Rescue members of our team. We will also discuss a possible Board or Workshop presentation in September. Sumie Imada RECYCLABLES PICKUP - July 12TH new collection site access #1 Friday, July 12 th will be the next recyclables pickup date due to the 4 th of July holiday. Please have your recyclables out for pickup by 9:00 AM. Thank you for your cooperation. Julie Dojiri, Conservation Club 2 BUILDINGS AND POOLS Minutes Tuesday, June 25, 2013 Meeting called to order by Chairman, Carl Aleccia at 9:35am. Roll Call: Carl Aleccia, Kathy Lindbergh, W. Scott Munro, Tom Kasterko, Gail Standley, Edie Crater, Gary Smith, Bud Brown. Guests: Paul Cohen, Deon Munro, Marlene and Bob Kraft, Gerry Johnson Carl introduced Randy, from Randy s plumbing to discuss scoping the sewer lines of the buildings with a camera to see where back up is. Randy said that probably not all building need the excessive flushing out. The scoping would address the problem areas. This would be the best way. Randy discussed his bid, as well as Carl said he has (2) other Bids. He could do possibly 2 buildings a day. Question was asked about tree roots. Randy said that even when a tree is removed the roots still grow. Also, question was asked about the pin hole leaks we are experiencing. He mentioned this is happening all over Torrance, no way to prevent the leak, but try and catch it early so that extensive damage does not occur. Randy suggests replacing the whole section of the pipe with better material and the lines that are weak. Question was asked about New Horizons purchasing our own Video Camera and training our employees, Randy said the Camera is very expensive, have to have a safe location to store the equipment and very expensive to repair because the lines sometimes get caught and break. Would not be recommended. Bids for Camera Scoping by the bidding plumbers will be discussed at the July 2, 2013 BIS meeting. Other business Carl Discussed: Maintenance on NH Fire Extinguishers will be taking place in 2 to 3 weeks. Bids are in and again using Maximum Fire Protection to do the work, same price as last maintenance. Work request on broken steps. Another leak in building 507 Unit B Nadine Circle. Building 213 in a unit, the washing machine hose leaked. A problem was reported about the pool deck at the sports center breaking apart. Also, the life saver ring needs replacement and was mentioned that the patio furniture at the sports center pool needs to be painted or replaced. Carl mentioned that was Clubhouse. Buildings and Pools over budget, plumbing is our biggest expense; we do use our employees when necessary to save cost. They do a great job. Meeting adjourned 10:20am Respectfully submitted Kathy Lindbergh, Vice Chairman July 1, 2013

6 Fourth of July Golf Tournament Results. As usual, the June Gloom lifted for our 4th of July golf tournament and picnic. 29 golfers teed it up on this warm morning. There were some really good scores. It seems that most of the golfers are peaking for the summer season. The greens are improving, but it seems we may be facing a long hot summer, which will stress the greens. Keep repairing those ball marks on the greens.
