3 TRAVEL CLUB UPDATE.2/15/'13 From: Ed Reilly, Club New Horizons Chairman Phone: We enjoyed a reasonably nice turnout for our February 7 meeting and got quite a bit accomplished. As reported last week in the February 8 newsletter, we had to cancel our March 21 trip to the J. Paul Getty Villa for lack of signups. So one of the first bits of business was to replace the Getty Villa trip with another. We regret we had to take this action for there were a modest number of you who really wanted to see this international educational center dedicated to the study of the arts and cultures of ancient Greece, Rome and Etruria. It truly is a fascinating attraction. Our replacement trip should appeal to our members who enjoy musical comedy theater (and who doesn t?). On Saturday, March 23, we will be going to the Glendale Center Theater to see the award winning show Crazy for You. This riotously entertaining show is a romantic musical comedy filled with a number of George and Ira Gershwin s classic songs. Crazy For You won the 1992 Tony Award for best musical and the Laurence Olivier award for best musical revival. We ve seen several plays at the Glendale and each one has been a winner. Lunch will be at the Outback Steak House. The cost for this exceptionally entertaining afternoon is $77.00 per person with 38 or more or $85.00 with 29 to 37 folks. The signup sheet is on the board. When you sign up, we ask that you also make your meal selection. Choices are: Sirloin steak, Chicken, Salmon or a veggie plate. We ll be leaving at 10:00 AM and returning at 5:00 PM. Let s make this trip a go. In April we are taking a cruise to Hawaii. The dates are April 10 through the 24 th. At our February 7 meeting we were fortunate to have one of our travel agents, Jo Tuzzolino of All Stars Travel, give us an over view of the trip. She was able to give us answers to a number of questions pertaining to the cruise. We sail round trip from San Pedro on the Golden Princess cruise ship. This means we won t have to do any flying, thereby saving us the hassle of going through LAX. Of course we visit all four islands. If you would like to go, give Ed Reilly a call at (310) and we will have the club make your reservations for you. We will need to know your name, who you wish to room with and whether you desire a stateroom with a balcony, a room with an ocean view or, perhaps, a mini suite. This will tell us how many cabins we need to have blocked and in what category. Once we determine what type of accommodations are desired, we can move forward and price according to individual desires. cont'd TRAVEL -cont'd. You are also free to make your own arrangements assuming you have a specific travel agency you like to use. Again, the ship is the Golden Princess and the dates are April 10-24, I ve just learned of an extra incentive for you men and women who might be veterans. The cruise line is offering a $250 shipboard credit in addition to other incentives if you are a vet. It makes no difference when you served. To be eligible, you only need to submit a copy of your discharge papers (DD-214) or a copy of your military retirement papers. If you have any questions, please give Ed Reilly a call. **************** WOMEN S GOLF TOURNAMENT THURS., 2/7/13 Beautiful day.. but not many players. Nine ladies. We hope for more next week. The goal is to make each tournament a social experience. We want players to mingle, get to know each other and have fun. We are planning eight (8) tournaments, with after-golf activities including food and beverages. Most will have a theme, and a shotgun start. Some on Saturday, others on Sundays, and of course the holidays of Memorial Day, the 4th, and Labor Day We created an "a la carte menu" of new games from which the players can pick and choose, and include 50/50 raffle that everyone can enter, not just golfers. "Inside the Rope" is another game, and in the larger tournaments we will have blind draws for gift cards. There will be a team of volunteers at every tournament to help sign up players, explain the games and do the scorekeeping. We encourage single players to sign up, and we will put the groups together. Invite your friends to play with us. We are also working on a miniature golf tournament, a summer evening golf league, and other ways to get together for fun. The tournament entry fee has been raised to $3.00, and the prize fund raised too. The 50/50 raffle tickets are $1.00 each or 7 for $5.00. Please contact me at genecando@gmail.com with questions, comments, suggestions Gene Aurand, Golf Committee Tournament Director.
