It is a wonderful game that usually retains its players throughout their lifetime. While generally regarded as a gentle aerobic activity that does not require superb fitness to play; strength from the tee and fairway is an asset to getting the ball as close to the hole, and on the greens, muscle control and accuracy become paramount to putt the ball into the cup. Golf provides a good walk with nature and exercise for the vast majority of body muscles. It even stimulates the mind, as a good performance brings excitement and enjoyment that motivates one to return for another round. Our club, at any time of year, provides a grand playing field for golf with a choice of four nines at your disposal. Your challenge of these 36 holes need not be a solo effort as 4,261 golfers are part of the club s 5,300 membership. Since golf is also a game that breeds instant friendships, it is near impossible at KGNS to not make a new friend that widens your social circle with each round of golf played. Alas, I also must sadly report that several club members have voiced to me that they have noticed unwanted changes in the attitudes of those they meet on the course. We all know the temperament of golfers is as diverse as their handicaps. Ernie Els is known to go about his job on the golf course with a gentle ease that has earned him the title the Big Easy, while Woods dominates the game with a zeal that parallels his first name - Tiger. Despite their differing approach to the game, however, neither of these professionals demonstrates poor sportsmanship. For those golfers at KGNS who are overly impatient about slow play or easily irritated by poor golf ethics, please do not become a snobbish, violent golfer who is worse than the players you are critical of. Let me reaffirm that we want KGNS to remain the firendly and peaceful place it has always been. The rules and regulations on golf are crystal clear on control of play, mannerisms and ethics. KGNS, while known to be a strict imposer of discipline, treats all members equal and we wish golfers to also treat each other as equals. Please be friendly and add to the enjoyment of others game, rather than robbing them of a relaxing round of golf. A brotherly reminder or friendly gesture is always better than becoming self absorbed in your game and risk the offence of others. Most matters between golfers can easily be settled on the course or, better still, over a cup of coffee or teh tarik after the game where a lasting friendship could evolve. The club strives to provide as many facilities as possible for the benefit of members but please do not abuse these privileges. For example, internet access and other vicinity of the clubhouse should be utilised with consideration and not to the annoyance of others. Let us together preserve our dignity and friendliness at all times and let the club be our home away from home, a haven where we can go to forget our miseries, if any. Happy New Year to everyone! Dr. Ismail Hashim Berita Subang 5

6 LETTER To The Editor This is an original piece of poem entitled Song of an Ancient Golfer which I have written for my forthcoming birthday. Song of an Ancient Golfer Praise to Thee, O God Almighty, For Thy infinite mercy. Merrily, steadily still standing at the tee Basking in Your glory - at seventy, I beseech Thee, O God! Grant me another ten, On second thought, make it twenty. My heart is filled with gladness when I see Shimmering white balls in the morning sun, The distant flag that flutters in the breeze, A soft pitch, a gentle chip rolling to the cup And the smell of grass from the freshly cut green. Ecstasy and jubilation - when I line my putt, the hole quivers In fearful anticipation. The little aggravations I have learned to control, When a game becomes a journey without destination, The incorrigible slice - that original sin, The ghastly hooks - destroyer of the soul, The cause of bleeding hearts from tee to green, And blessed be those nasty holes that refuse to stay still. When its time for me to tee-off For the final fairway beyond the stars, With a tinge of sadness and a drop of tear, To my only son I bequeath, My S-Yard, my Scotty Cameron and my ball retriever, So that he may cherish Life With its murky ponds, unyielding hazards and unforgiving sands And when, on a moonlight evening, you happen to see An ancient golfer on a distant green Fear not my friends, it s only my Spirit! For this crazy game - a sport of Kings and scoundrels who cannot count It is not just for the living to enjoy Dato Dr. Shamsuddin Kassim (S 728) Copyright@reserved 6 Berita Subang

7 Club News Introduction Night 2 Following on from the 30 th July affair, 38 new members, flanked by proposers and family, were formally inducted into the KGNS fold at the second instalment of Introduction Night held on 10 th December The larger-than-usual intake comprised 29 ordinary members, including 4 Government servants, and 9 others who were upgraded from the ranks of junior membership. In his welcoming speech to the new members, KGNS President Y.B. Dato Ir. Donald Lim remarked that the evening s ceremony, mandatory under Club Rules, served as formal confirmation of their status as full-fledged members. He added though privileged with access to all golfing, social and recreational facilities and the right to vote at Annual General Meetings, new members should maintain discipline at all times and contribute by participating in club events and activities. He also reminded that being a premier club, there is a need in KGNS for quality members. The President also announced that KGNS is currently pursing reciprocity arrangements, particularly with golfing establishments in the ASEAN region and, to-date 3 affiliations are being considered. Members of the Management Committee, the Membership Sub-Committee and the Editorial Board were then formally presented to the assembly before the dinner bell. During the event, Berita Subang took time to talk to a random sample of the newly-enrolled for their views, impressions and/or thoughts Norlida Aris - A businesswoman and an avid golfer with 14 handicap (introduced by Wan Aziz Hj. Wan Ali). Golf-wise, KGNS offers me what I needed. Aside from the close proximity from my house, it s a friendly club that offers cheap and good food! Yeoh Keong Lee, 23 - works in Singapore finance company (introduced by dad Mr. Yeoh Cheok Swee) said, he is familiar with the club since early age and took up taekwondo and swimming lessons then and intend to be a golfer soon. Syed Azharuddin Syed A. Rahman, 35 - An accountant (introduced by dad, Syed A. Rahman/Dato Jamal) who has been keen on KGNS since his younger days said I had wanted to join the club earlier but my heavy work schedules had deferred me from doing so. I am attracted to KGNS because the food is good, the course is beautiful and its location. Aspires to play golf and spends more time now at the range Dr. Anuradha a/p Pathmanathan - An anaesthelogist (introduced by Mr. Bala/ Dr. Krishnamoorthy) was drawn to KGNS because it s a premier golf club with good junior programme, good massage centre (husband has tried it) and the food (Eagle s Nest). Intends to take up golf and enrol her daughter as well. Nicholas Ng, 23 - A law graduate with Masters from the University of Sheffield (introduction first initiated by dad, late Mr. Freddie Ng). For Nicholas, KGNS has a mixed bag of good sports facilities e.g. swimming, squash, golf & tennis besides reasonably good food and friendliness of the members. Berita Subang 7

Course Review Kelana Course Sultan s Nine Hole No metres (par-4) Blue 340 metres White 321 metres Red 281 metres Index 11 The 6th is a slight dogleg-right hole. At 340 metres from the blue tees, this is not a long hole but to score well here, two accurate strikes are needed. The drive has to clear the trees on the left and right and up ahead, two bunkers guard both sides of the fairway at the 160 metre mark. Clear these hurdles and you have an open view of the green. Just be careful to avoid the bunkers on both flanks leading to the putting surface. 8 Berita Subang

15 COURSE & Grounds Lau Ang Khim (Chairman - Course & Grounds) Course and Grounds Sub-Committee Chairman Lau Ang Khim Committee Members Hani Abdullah Chou Kan Yin Gurucharan Singh Wan Rasdi Wan Ahmad Isa Shukri Dr. Mahmud Hj Abdul Wahab Lt. Col (R) Lim Ong Heng This Sub-Committee is tasked with, amongst others 1. Maintenance and upkeep of the fairways of Putra and Kelana courses at the highest level of play. 2. Course beautification and aesthetic touches. 3. Drainage and irrigation to ensure efficient distribution and/or supply of water. 4. Course improvement and upgrading as directed by the Management Committee. The most ambitious project for 2007 was the buggy track for the Putra Course completed in September. The track, besides its obvious benefits to the golfer, is also a smart track in that it acts as divertand-drain-off system during rain, thereby reducing the time to resume play by 15 minutes! Other projects include i) The installation of multi-purse gazebo at the car park adjacent to Hole No. 1. The gazebo serves as a bag drop and registration point for competitions. ii) The newly-constructed body of water at the same Hole in place of the lateral drain (see accompanying photos 2 & 3). This is linked to the recently upgraded pond on the right of Hole 9, doubling up as a much-needed catchment area and reservoir. It is not, as some irate golfers remarked, a watery gravesite for trapping errant shots! 2.Before Lateral drain across fairway #1, Putra Course. 3. After Catchment areacum-reservoir across fairway #1, Putra Course. 1.GAZEBO at car park adjacent to Tee-Box #1, Putra Course. Our priority and attention is also given to the Kelana Course. Works are complete on the Sultan s and Tun s Nines e.g. drainage improvements made at Holes No. 14 and 15 (see accompanying photos 3 & 4). Also new and higher netting has been installed on the right side of fairway No. 3 for safety to the road users on the other side of the boundary. Continued on page 16 Berita Subang 15

16 Course COURSE & Grounds & Grounds Continued from page 15 This Planned Programme will surely take us a few steps nearer to being the truly World-Class golf course - Lau Ang Khim (Chairman - Course & Ground) Proposed Irrigation Facility, Putra Course. beautification programme, the Sub-Committee hope golfers will also contribute towards our course care, i.e. replacing divots, repairing pitch marks and raking bunkers. The major task that we have however, is the irrigation facility at the Putra Course (see schematic diagram). When completed, it will end our water woes and will give KGNS an additional 40 million litres for storage or use. Even so, with more water features it will make the course more challenging to the golfers. Note Members wishing to air their views (on the irrigation facility) may have a sit-in dialogue with the Sub-Committee. Projects pending approval. 1. Excavation works to create two man-made ponds in the low-lying wooded area between Tee Box No. 3 and Green No. 4. These two ponds will, in turn, link and feed to the existing pond just left of Green No. 5. Course beautification has also been carried out and this include the main entrance to the clubhouse. The area adjacent to the 2 nd Tee Box has been spruced up and landscaping is in progress at the mid-way hut and strategic areas of the Putra Course (see accompanying photos 5 & 6). In pursuing the Building of an earth bund at the other end of the lateral drain, near the tree line on the right of Hole No. 5, to function as a catchment area and giving a cascading waterfall effect. Flooding of the existing lateral drain across Hole No. 5 (which may require widening and/or re-modelling) to channel flow of water into the above-mentioned two ponds. 16 Berita Subang

17 4.Before Drainage improvement in progress at fairway #14, Kelana Course. 5. After Drainage improvement completed at fairway #14, Kelana Course. 6. New look at the main entrance to the clubhouse. Presently, KGNS is dependent (with the good offices of MBPJ and developers) on water from the pond beside the newly-built Plaza Kelana Jaya for the fairways and greens located at the far reaches of the Putra Course fronting Jalan SS 7/2. This loose arrangement, however, comes with a price. The Sub-Committee foresees supply disruptions during any significant drought or change of heart by the Plaza residents. The biggest challenge faced by the Sub- Committee is to be constantly mindful of the need to weigh cost benefits against available resources. Key questions i) To outsource work to contracted labour or deploy in-house expertise? ii) To plan the costly long term objective or cheaper short term demand? For instance, the request by trolley-toting golfers for a constructed pathway to cut across and avoid the buggy track looped around Tee Box 16 of the Putra Course. Pulling a trolley along the track is a metre walk (isn t it for this reason golf is played in the first place?) whereas a 10-metre shortcut would certainly deprive one of the exercise - and cost KGNS another financial expense! On a bright note, we would advise all trolley bearers that kerbs on either side of the buggy track has been built up/sloped/stabilised, making it easy to get on or off. The Sub-Committee is working towards making the course in KGNS easy on the eye, easy on the body and easy on the money! 7. Course beautification - Landscaped area adjacent to Tee-Box #2, Putra Course. Above 8. Course beautification - Buggy track and landscaped area at mid-way hut, Putra Course. Left 9. 22 SOCIAL & Recreation Hj. Nazri Dato Mohd Hashim (Chairman - Social & Recreation) KGNS Family Day A Roaring Success The KGNS Family Day 2007 was opened not only to members but also to staff and their families. A big crowd comprising members, staff members and guests turned out for the Fiesta which was held mainly around the Poolside Area. There were food stalls and booths set up around the area. Strudels were invited to set up their pastry booth to the delight of the members at the Golfers Terrace. Lots of activities were organised throughout the day to keep all the crowd happy and busy. There were karaoke for those to show off their singing talents, picture drawn by the caricarturist and the children were excited to have their faces painted. The clowns were busy sculpturing animal balloons that were given away, and stilt walkers were also giving out candies to everyone. The highlight of the occasion was the fire eaters providing a fiery 22 Berita Subang

Among the favourites for golf enthusiasts were the Longest Drive, Crazy Putting, Best Bunker Shot and Chipping Contests. The kids had their fun also as they participated in the Colouring Contest and Musical Chairs. The swimming contests came on at about 4.00pm with Spoon and Egg, Coin Collection and First Bite of the Apple. The greatest excitement for the children was when the 50 cent coins were thrown into the wading pool for them to collect in the Coin Collection Contest. What is a better way to get yourselves familiarised with KGNS the who s, what s and where s within the compound of our own beloved Club? 26 GOLF Updates Hyundai-KGNS Selangor Amateur Open An international field of 120 amateur golfers representing 9 countries, including Malaysia, turned out at the MGA sanctioned Hyundai-KGNS Selangor Amateur Open Championship held at the Putra Course from November A practice round on Monday the 12 th preceded the over-subscribed 3-day event for which the organisers unfortunately had to turn away more than a score of would-be entrants! Kim Dong Hyun. MGA golfer Mohamad Arie Irawan (0) set the pace on Day 1 to top the leaderboard with a 3-under 69 gross whereas Lebanese Karim Sinno (10) returned a creditable 66 on count back (ocb) in the Nett-category. Playing conditions, by general consensus, were ideal with sunny skies above and fairly firm fairways and responsive greens. It was a complete reversal of fortune, though, on Day 2 when morning showers pelted down to make things wet, to say the least. Despite the rain- delayed start, the mood was buoyant with new leaders taking charge - MGA scratch golfer Akhmal Tarmizee Mohd Nazari made his presence felt with a 70 Gross and KGNS very own Juliandri Nazaini (10) finishing with a Nett 66 ocb. On Day 3 and with opening roundlike weather prevailing, it was Akhmal Tarmizee who stormed ahead improving by 5 strokes from the day before to return an inspiring 67 Gross and, in the final reckoning, a winning tally of 211! 7-handicapper Korean Lim Sung Hyun posted a Nett 65 to lead but only for the day and had to be contented with 2 nd placing in the Nett category. It is challenging, the whole layout, greens (speed) and pin positions. However, you need to take care of the apron especially during wet season. For the record, it was also at KGNS that Akhmal Tarmizee won the TSM Challenge held in July this year! In interviews with Berita Subang, here is what some of our other visitors had to say about the Subang experience Alistair Guthrie (2), Scotland - has been in Malaysia for past 9 years, plays in KGNS 2-3 times a year - Though cow grass, superb playing conditions here with greens true and fair. Marshals did a good job. I would rate KGNS among the top 5 in Malaysia. Kwak Hong Won (4), Korea - located in Malaysia for past 3 years - Course very good and very challenging from tee to green. This was my second time playing in KGNS. I like the course very much. Will come back and play again. 30 INTER-CLUB Match KGNS vs Bukit Darmo Golf Club On 31 st October, a contingent of golfers from KGNS comprising 5 ladies and 23 gents left KL for Surabaya for a scheduled inter-club fixture with Bukit Darmo Club. Arriving just before noon at Juanda International Airport and en route to our lodgings, we stopped over at the scenic Ciputra Golf & Klub Keluarga for a social game. However, due to an early sunset in East Java, not all of us had time to complete 18 holes and some had to console ourselves with the breathtaking view that the location had to offer! We are seeking affiliation with Come 1 st November morning, off we went after breakfast to yet another scenic spot, a fantastic course called the FINA Golf Club, for what can best be described as an interesting social game! For starters, there was a quiet stillness in the air, possibly due to a recent incident of mudflow. Then, as we played through their fairways and fast greens, cotton trees (pokok kapas) were seen everywhere, even on their wellmaintained grass! The caddies were no help either, with their discomforting news that we were golfing in the midst of active volcanoes! Finally, on Day 3, all decked out in our red T-shirts, dark blue pants and caps bearing the KGNS logo, we were ready to do battle on foreign soil for club and country! After a very warm welcome extended by Bukit Darmo Club General Manager, a Malaysian himself, and the customary exchange of gifts and souvenirs, the KGNS team went on to triumph 8 to 4, our first inter-club win, at home or away, for 2007! The prize giving-cum-dinner was an enjoyable affair, with tokens of friendship exchanged yet again in fond remembrance of our trip to Surabaya. All too soon, it was time to head home and, with trophy in hand, the team returned safely on 4 th November Mr. Rajakulasingam, GM of Bukit Darmo, holding the souvenir as the KGNS Captain speaks. 34 KGNS STAFF Staff Annual Event A big thank you to all generous members for their donation in making the annual staff party possible and succesful. This annual event not only brings all the staff of different departments together in closer rapport, but also gives them a sense of belonging. We love KGNS and proud of KGNS. KGNS BOLEH! 34 Berita Subang

35 KGNS Staff Profile Sathasivam a/l Doraisamy N ow into his 35 th year of service, mandor (overseer) Sathasivam a/l Doraisamy, 52, has seen it all at KGNS, from its formative years under the presidency of Almarhum Y.A.B. Tun Hussein Onn right through to the present. With the distinction of being the longest serving staff at Subang, Sathasivam s tenure dates back to 3 rd April 1973, the day he joined the workforce at age 18 as labourer/field hand. In the ensuing years, he moved progressively up the ranks to machine operator, handling rough mowers, bush cutters etc, and later, tractors. The father of 4 who hails from Shah Alam, Selangor, is one of 2 overseers in the Course and Grounds Department, reporting to Course Superintendent Encik Shamsul Bahrin, and between the pair, they supervise a team of about 40 workers. For Sivam, a typical work day begins pre-dawn (or earlier, on competition days!), with muster at 6.30 a.m. and dispatch of field staff to their scheduled assignments, e.g., planting, weeding, bunker raking or cutting. Supervision aside, his responsibilities include upkeep of machinery and equipment and, when called upon, filling in for absent and/or indisposed workers. Then, there is an hour s break, taken at a.m., and thereafter work resumes until the end of day at 2.30 p.m., but not before some administrative chores are attended to and machines and tools are cleaned and stowed for use tomorrow. Workday extensions, if any, are occasioned, more often than not, by emergencies, e.g. trees felled throughout the course during severe storm, or final preparations for a major golf event. To a query by Berita Subang, Sivam reckons that, excepting the controversy over our greens in the run-up to the 1998 Malaysian Open, he has encountered little in the way of big problems at KGNS. Our terrain, he adds, is generally quite gentle and this helps us in our work. Also, as an old club, we do not have all these Bermuda types of grass for fairways and greens which are difficult to maintain in our Malaysian climate. On his future plans after mandatory retirement at 55, he hopes to continue enjoying good health and to find gainful employment, wherever available, in his chosen line of work! Berita Subang 35
