4 CAPTAIN S Note Internalization & Internationalization Our club was recently voted the Best Private Members Club in the country in the Golf Malaysia Golf Course Poll 2007/2008. Other accolades received included the 3 rd best Clubhouse/Facilities in Malaysia and the 12th Best Golf Course in the country. In fact, for a number of years the golfers who voted in the biennial Golf Malaysia Golf Course Poll have ranked us amongst the top clubs, confirming the high regard most golfers have for KGNS. Our vision of being a Premier Membership Golf Club in the country appears to have been achieved. The question now is whether we can sustain our position of supremacy. And this will only be possible with continuous support from all. Golfers at home and abroad speak highly of our golf course. Inter-club matches on our home ground are always oversubscribed by other clubs members. In a recent review, the number of affiliated members patronizing our club far exceeded the number of our members using the facilities of our reciprocal clubs, forcing us to institute measures to maintain the balance. The number of requests to host private games, especially at the Putra course, has also been on the rise. However, in order to safeguard members interests, only top ranked internationally renowned competitions are to be featured to enhance and maintain the prestigious status of our Club. We are indeed very honoured that this year the MGA has selected The question now is whether we can sustain our position of supremacy. And this will only be possible with continuous support from all. us to host the 106 th Malaysian Amateur Open in May, followed by TSM GOLF In search of the Malaysian Tiger in June, and our very own inaugural KGNS Ladies Open in July. It should be only a matter of time before the Malaysian Open returns to Subang. At the international level, we are aggressively increasing our affiliation status with well-known golf clubs. We cannot help it, however, if some clubs decide to terminate their long-standing relationship with us for reasons that are beyond our control. The steps taken to maintain KGNS as a premier golf club are well known to all especially at the international level and they shall be actively pursued. Members who abuse club privileges and tarnish our reputation shall be severely dealt with. The long-standing KGNS land issue should also be amicably resolved. Members are asked to understand its implications and the long-term benefit that will be available once this matter is resolved. The various sub-committees have also been briefed to assist members in un- In order to safeguard members interests, only top ranked internationally renowned competitions are to be featured to enhance and maintain the prestigious status of our Club. 4 Berita Subang

5 Management Committee 07/08 Our Vision, Mission, Values and Plan of actions are formulated to bring about positive changes to our Club and to our members. As responsible members we ought to internalize these qualities to ensure togetherness in spirit and as support for us to make quantum leaps to greater heights. derstanding and supporting this issue when it is discussed at an appropriate forum. Towering individuals are being sought to occupy key positions to ensure efficient action and excellent management at our club. Members are also urged to exercise wisdom to select capable, honest and hard working committee members at our coming AGM. The adage that the burden is ours and the glory is yours! will also be reviewed to encourage participation of quality representatives. Practices at successful and reputable golf clubs will be examined and may be adopted as expectations of members today are very different from when the club byelaws were first drafted. As Captain, I am also obliged to note here that despite all the recognition and attention that KGNS has received, and in spite of the good image built, dedicated service rendered, and the aspirations communicated, some members continue to be indifferent, uncooperative, unfriendly and negative on all matters affecting the Club. A few are fond of seeking cheap frivolous thrills around the table through bad mouthing, back stabbing and rumour mongering leading to cowardly acts of poison pen letter writing and personal attacks, behaviour which should not be evident at a club like ours. These misdemeanors detract from the true spirit of friendship and from the good clubbing atmosphere sought by most members and is totally unacceptable at KGNS if we are to move forward. I categorically state here that being responsible club officials, club image is paramount and overrides personal interests. Any unsubstantiated accusations and wild allegations by anyone are purely malicious and will never be tolerated by us. Such irresponsible members should be ostracized by all. Our Vision, Mission, Values and Plan of actions are formulated to bring about positive changes to our Club and to our members. As responsible members we ought to internalize these qualities to ensure togetherness in spirit and as support for us to make quantum leaps to greater heights. It is so easy to criticize others without volunteering to share the burdens. If one really cares for the club, enjoys golfing and the comradeship of club members, please appreciate what we have and not be selfish by causing distress to others just to satisfy personal grudges! 6 CLUB News The will provide a stern test for participants KGNS hosts 106th Malaysian Amateur Open KGNS will play host to the 106th edition of the Malaysian Amateur Open (MAO) on May Billed as one of the oldest golf championships in the region, it was last held here in As in past years, the event is expected to draw an international field of golfers from far and wide and a large turnout is anticipated at Subang in For example, in 2007 at Nexus Karambunai Golf Resort, Kota Kinabalu, a record entry of 123 participants from 18 countries was registered. KGNS members may recall that the MAO has served as the launch pad for many a professional career in golf, sending Zainal Abidin Yusof, Tan Yee Khan, Eshak Bluah, P. Segaran and R. Nachimuthu into the pro ranks. Former amateurs/ participants who have since found international fame as professionals include the likes of Australia s Robert Allenby, Mardan Mamat of Singapore, Shiv Kapur from India, Filipino Juvic Pangusan and Thailand s Thongchai Jaidee and Prom Messawat. Immedietly after the Amateur Open, on May 2008, KGNS will continue to serve as venue for the inaugural Malaysian Match Play Championship. This is an all-new MGA sanctioned event where the top 32 players from the MAO will go on to compete, in a different but no less challenging format. In this respect, all MAO participants will be required to play 72 holes to qualify for the Championship. For a premier golf club such as KGNS, the staging of the Malaysian Amateur Open is yet another opportunity to showcase the pristine condition of our fairways and greens. More importantly, it is to serve notice, to demonstrate and reiterate to all and sundry our capability to run world-class tournaments, as we have done in the not-too-distant past. It is Alex Tiong, one of Malaysia s national players is a likely starter hoped that the Malaysian Amateur Open will be the forerunner for KGNS to be the host venue for yet another internationallyflavoured tournament, the Malaysian Open in the near future. 6 Berita Subang

7 COURSE Review Kelana Course, Anyone? There was a time when the Kelana Course was inappropriately nicknamed, in grave injustice, we might add, Kiddies Corner, with the connotation that it was suited only to novices and high-handicappers. The Main Course, now named Putra, was then, and still is, the place to play real golf, if you choose to believe some of us in the KGNS family. Possibly, this could be the underlying reason for the poor ( no quorum ) support, leading almost always to cancellations, of ABC Medals when scheduled at the Kelana Course. By contrast, there is a scramble for berths when the Medals are staged at the Putra! For many, though, the Kelana has its own inherent charm and challenge the fairways are narrower and, therefore, not altogether forgiving to errant shots! To approach the smaller and trickier greens, you would need to be straight and sure! Excellent conditions all, don t you think, for any golfer looking to sharpen his or her game before taking on the lengthier and wider Putra? And yet.. The Competitions Sub-Committee has taken stock of this and, to correct the anomaly, will continue to promote and run Medal events at the Kelana by combining all the categories, i.e., Men, Ladies and Juniors. This will more than make up the requisite minimum number of participants to validate the event and, more importantly, give to the Kelana Course the recognition and respect it deserves! Happy golfing! Kelana Course Sultan s Nine Hole No metres (par-3) Blue : 188 metres White : 176 metres Red : 131 metres Index : 15 This par-3, that plays 188 metres from the blue tee, is a straight forward hole but does not yield pars too easily. First, there s the length, necessitating the use of a metalwood or hybrid club for many. Then there is the danger of sending your ball out of bounds if your drive veers too much to the right. A bunker also guards the left side of the green. Once on the large putting surface, read your lines with care as three putts are common. Berita Subang 7

10 Junior Golf Abdul Majid Md Yusof (Chairman - Buggies, Caddies, Driving Range & Sports Development)) Hisyam Does KGNS Proud! 15-year old Mohamad Hisyam bin Abdul Majid (A841-1G) did KGNS proud in finishing joint 3rd Overall in the recent Malaysian National Trials organised by Malaysian Golf Association (MGA). The trials, a permanent fixture in the MGA s calender held in early January each year is part of the Association s effort to scout for new emerging talent and also acts as a benchmark for selection to the national team and back-up squads Restricted to all amatuer golfers with handicap 6 and below, the 6-day Trials attracted 47 male golfers from all over Malaysia. The first two legs of two days each were held at Bukit Unggul Golf Club and Danau Golf Club, both in Bangi, where after a cut-off, the top 20 moved on to play the final for another two days at Bukit Jalil Golf and Country Club. Hisyam, handicap 4, played consistent golf during the first two stages (75, 75, 75 and 72) to make the cut and finish joint 4th. On day 1 of the 3rd leg, a brilliant 2-under 70 moved him to 3rd place on his own but a final round of 77 saw him having to share the spot. Syabas Hisyam, who has been selected by MGA for the national team! 10 Berita Subang

11 Besides having Paula Creamer as an idol, she also aspires to fly the KGNS banner high one day, on the international golf scene! Aisyah at Junior Golf Clinic If you ever pay a visit to our Junior Golf Clinics, chances are you will come upon a precocious eight-year old (as of 1June 2008!) named Aisyah bte Mohd Ismail (M768IF) engrossed in practice! Her interest for the game developed, possibly, out of the sheer boredom of having to tag along with her dad on his frequent sessions to the driving range. Be that as it may, the little lass now has a bona fide affinity for the game. She trains regularly at the KGNS Junior Golf Clinics, with a lot of encouragement and support from parents Puan Roslinda and Encik Mohd Ismail. Apparently, the friendly environment of these clinics helps make her very comfortable whilst training to the extent that she often asks for more time to improve her swing techniques! As an indication of her determination to excel, she can be a mite testy with Dad for his caring, though unsolicited, remarks during training about ball flight not taking off or I think you need more training! Aisyah attends a national type primary school (Chinese) in Kg. Subang and there is an older 13-year sibling Mohd Ilyas, who also accompanies her to the Sunday golf clinics at KGNS. One more thing, AIsyah is always unmistakably decked out in her favourite colour, pink. Does that ring a bell? Besides having Paula Creamer as an idol, she also aspires to fly the KGNS banner high one day, on the international golf scene! A tall order, you say? Well, you haven t met Aisyah yet! 13 Ushering the Year of the Rat, Gong Xi Fa Cai was the theme for Members Night held on the ninth day of the Chinese New Year. The evening s festivities began with the traditional Lion Dance, performed by the orphans from Ti-Ratana. Heralded by the pulsating beat of drums and the clashing of cymbals, the duo of lions went through their energetic dance routine, much to the excitement of the eager crowd. Making its way from the lobby entrance of the clubhouse up to Bilik Buaya, to subsequently collect their ang pow, the pair of lions even found time to delight surprised diners at the Eagle s Nest. The night went on with a number of breathtaking performances including a very skillful vase-balancing act by a Chinese acrobat, precision-timed sword play, face-change display and a Chinese dance troupe that amazed everyone with their super-flexible body contortions. As is the custom of KGNS, the Social and Recreation Sub- Committee invited some of the members in attendance to join in and toss the Yee Sang (raw fish) dish with fond wishes of prosperity, longevity and good fortune for everyone in the year ahead! 22 GOLF Updates What s Goes On In KGNS - The KUTU Game! Datin Zahariah (B 071), one of the pioneer spouse members of KGNS, mooted the idea of the kutu game after transferring back from Johor Bahru. In looking to rekindle ties and getting together with long-lost lady golfer friends, she came up with the interesting notion of pool and play. How it works is that the ladies, most of whom are homemakers, put aside (from their marketing money, we believe) and contribute RM 100 each month towards a common pool. Out of this central fund, the group then dishes out for themselves at each golf outing the requisite food, prizes and door gifts too, not to mention a big helping of fun and fellowship! We have gained more friends instead, says Datin Zahariah, and since most of us are high handicappers, we enjoy our games at the Kelana course we only play 9 holes. And that s not all to spice up the golf, the mode of play is varied each time, e.g.. Stableford format or 4-club competition or, when so inclined, the Texas Scramble. Just a thought may husbands join in? As caddies only? Chicken Run at KGNS With the focus on fellowship and to promote social interaction among golfers of all ages, the Chicken Run, a 9-hole fun event, is open to all members (men, ladies and juniors) with valid handicaps. Played off both the 1 st and 10 th Holes on Stableford format for each Nine, the inaugural event held on Wednesday, 16 th January 2007 at the drew much interest from golfers though the final turnout was smaller than anticipated. Nevertheless, it was encouraging enough to warrant a follow-up fixture scheduled for: Date : Wednesday, 16 th April 2008 Time : First tee-off at 4.00 p.m., last at 5.00 p.m. Place : Entrance fee : RM per head (includes high tea and prizes) Prizes : 1 st Nine 1 st place 2 roast chickens 2 nd place 1 roast chicken 2 nd Nine 1 st place 2 roast chickens 2 nd place 1 roast chicken All are welcome! Early bird registration on a firstcome-first-serve basis allows you to pick your preferred tee off times while slots for walk-in competitors will be subject to availability. So pass the word to your friends and fellow golfers and come around for a fun afternoon on 16 th April The Sunday Boys When good friends get together, someone is sure to come up with a bright idea that works wonders. And so it was with the Sunday Boys, an ensemble of 20 or more golfers that slug it out only on Sunday afternoons, for loads of fellowship and fun and a healthy dose of charity. Captained by a charismatic and multi-lingual A. Subramaniam (aka Japan Maniam for his fluency in Japanese, as well as Thai, Mandarin, Indonesian, etc), the group includes stalwarts like Suppiah Subramaniam (S 476), S. Subramaniam (S 670) and many others. Their setup is simple and pretty informal someone in the group is designated to book flights and inform the others, the format or mode of play is fixed, then all chip in RM30.00 (for refreshments) into a pool and, last but not least, show up at the tee box! Underpinning it all, though, is the serious side of contributing to charity group members fork out RM to be disbursed to support the needy, viz., an orphanage, in the name of the late Chandra Kumar s family. Obvious as it may seem to some, membership in the Sunday Boys is not restricted to any particular ethnic community but open to all. Anyone is welcome to join in and there have been occasions when guests from Japan, Thailand, USA and Europe have been known to join in the fray. For K.J. Singham (J 075), playing with this group for more than three years has very much improved his golf game. We rotate flights and in case of shortage in pool money, we top up. We even have our own T-shirts, sponsored by S. Subramaniam! he said. 22 Berita Subang

24 LETTER To The Editor What s in A Name? KELAB GOLF NEGARA SUBANG or KELAB GOLF NEGARA, Subang In the case of KGNS, our club is the first and the only golf club in the country opened and established by a Prime Minister of the country! What s in a name? A name brings recognition and identity. In this respect, KGNS or Kelab Golf Negara Subang is quite misleading in a sense. It is situated in Kelana Jaya rather than in Subang, and is only in the vicinity of Subang airport. That too has been closed and is now known as KLIA, located near Sepang. Arguably, although the KLIA is situated in Sepang district, the international airport is the main gateway into Kuala Lumpur and hence the KLIA designation with no reference to Sepang. In the case of KGNS, our club is the first and the only golf club in the country opened and established by a Prime Minister of the country! Secondly, KGNS by its name, and mind you that in itself was created by an Act of Parliament, is a NATIONAL GOLF CLUB. It is not a golf club for the Subang nation or negara Subang, as the description implies! If in our Vision we want to be the Premier Membership Golf Club in the country, then that national status must be boldly emphasised. We have to seriously consider a change to suit our given stature. Would it not, therefore, be more appropriate to call our club, in full, KELAB GOLF NEGARA, Subang, i.e., with its designated name highlighted in bold letters to keep its identity and national status intact, and a comma and small lettering for Subang to indicate locality? Accordingly, in translation, we would effectively be called NATIONAL GOLF CLUB, Subang. Simple though it may be, this little change reflects a lot of difference in our character and validates our standing as a national heritage club. Perhaps like all other organisations of similar status, we too would be deserving of an annual allocation from the government for our upkeep and development! Anonymous 24 Berita Subang

30 KGNS STAFF Highlight Muzani Bin Musa In much the same fashion as his senior colleague Maintenance Supervisor, Azaman, KGNS Personnel Officer, Muzani bin Musa, 38, began his career at the club in the F & B sector as a daily-rated waiter! That was back in October A little over a year later, his position was made permanent and he continued serving at what was then called the Mixed Lounge. In 1991, not long after computerisation arrived at KGNS, Muzani was promoted to POS (Point-of-Sale) Clerk, mainly a cashiering function in the Accounts Department. It was an opportune time for the enterprising lad to enroll in night classes in computer studies on part-time basis at the then Binary Business School, with an eye towards career advancement. In 1998, however, all POS Clerk functions were taken over by the F & B Department and the position, in turn became redundant. This proved fortuitous for Muzani who had the opportunity to move to Administration and serve as a personnel clerk under Department head, the late Mohd. Hashim Bin Hamdon, whom he still holds in high regard to this day. I have learnt a lot, says Muzani, and he was always there to guide me. When Hashim was medically boarded out, in 2002, Muzani was promoted to assume his current post of Personnel Officer. The father to a 4-year old boy, Muzani, who hails from Tasek Gelugor, Seberang Prai Utara but has lived in Selangor since infancy, has many memories of KGNS, both fond and bittersweet. He recalls the elation he felt when the move to the new clubhouse was completed back in 1996, as it provided the sense of a new beginning! February 2002, was a sad time for him, however, with the passing of Osman Ali, then F & B Supervisor and Union Chairman, a good friend and colleague. Muzani regards KGNS as his second home and he hopes that someday the club will gain international recognition and that the values, as embodied in our Vision & Mission statement, are universally practised. The latter, he reckons, will strengthen the bond between club members and staff, regardless of the change of guard in Management Committees. In this context, he looks forward to continued development in KGNS particularly in the area of facilities, given that our golf course is already top class! Bon Voyage, AMIR After 26 years of dedicated service, Amiruddin bin Kassim, Golf Supervisor, has called it quits at KGNS. He first came to us in December 1981 when, at the tender age of 17, he commenced employment at Poolside as a part-time waiter, in which position he was confirmed the following year. His true calling, though, was golf and Amir got his break when, in 1989, he was transferred to that department to serve as Caddy Master. Here s how he has progressed through the intervening years: April 1994 Nov 1994 March : : : : Competitions Clerk Chief Caddy Master Sports Assistant, involved in day-to-day administration of Golf Department, scoring, score cards and handicaps update, daily staff roster, registration of guests and reciprocal members, amongst other duties. Position re-designated as Golf Supervisor until 29/02/08 In cataloguing his experiences in the near- 3 decades at KGNS, Amir recalled the 80 s as a time of much close inter-action with members and staff alike and in the 90 s the incident, when as Caddy Master, he was struck on the head by a caddie, fainted and was on M/C for a month! The real challenges, though, were in the last 9 years when, fully exposed to golf and a host of new golfers, he had to learn how to settle down and keep a happy mind at all times! In any case, the most unforgettable experience in his books was the time when he had to testify in a court of law on a wrong score suit! Amir s immediate plans are to venture into the business of fish and chicken breeding in Paya Jaras, Sungei Buloh. For now, in acknowledging his thanks to all past and present Captains, Lady Captains, Management Committees, KGNS members and staff, he has singled out for special mention his sifu, Encik Shukri M. Said (M980) for all the guidance and knowledge given over the years. Here s what others have to say about Amir: Sifu Shukri bin Said (M 980) : When I was a Junior Golf Executive of KGNS, I observed a hardworking and responsible waiter and gave a strong recommendation for Amir to be promoted to Sports Assistant. He was willing to work odd hours without any hesitation. I m proud of him for his excellent performance. Sad to see him leaving and wish him all the best. Alex Hong (H 136) : Good staff and very dedicated to his duty. Wish him all the best. Sorry and sad to see him cos he has managed to handle competitions very well and smoothly. Mahrome Mohamed (M 597) : The most hardworking and trustworthy staff of KGNS! 30 Berita Subang
