North Palm Beach Green' s Committee Notes February 10' x', March 9`4, 2016 General Comments Spring has arrived already! We have shifted into growing mode, and are fertilizing wall to wall to get the turf moving again. Good turf health is essential to us being able to perform our herbicide treatments effectively. That will be our focus in the upcoming weeks, to knock down the winter weeds that have sprouted in the short grass. We will also be doing some plantings, and getting started on sodding some of the beat up areas around the course.. 7 I'*.-JICKL-.AIJ-Cs 2/ 26/2016 Ms. Casey Mitchell North Palm Beach Country Club 951 US Hwy One North Palm Beach Fl DESIGN Agronomy Services Via cmitchellgvillage- np6.or Re: Visits of February 5 and 8, 2016 Dear Casey: i was very pleased with the condition of the golf course this visit, which is traditionally the time of year when things don' t look so good at North Palm Beach Country Club. The unseasonably warm temperature certainly has helped as the fairways are holding up to the cart traffic better than I have seen in recent years. Even the narrows of #1 has grass on it this winter. Likewise, the greens have good color, density, and root depth showing that Rick' s more aggressive aerification program is paying off. Even the Off Type Mini Verde was barely visible this visit, though by no means do I think it is going away. Rick' s stepped up grooming of the bunkers was again evident, and the weed control program is producing very good results in the main play areas. The tees were also holding up well and in spite of the frequent rainfall the course was relatively firm throughout. All of this added up to a picture of a well groomed golf course that meets the Nicklaus standard of maintenance set forth for this golf course U. S. 8 GREENS RESURFACING We spent a lot of time discussing the potential resurfacing of the greens this visit which may now be connected to the clubhouse reconstruction project. Chris Cochran and I returned the following Monday to make further recommendations and the result is a general plan to move forward with setting up cost estimates. I' ll summarize those recommendations as follows: Based on the depth of the organic buildup and the various layers of topdressing sand within this material, it was decided to strip off 4 inches from the surface down and adjust the tie -in elevations accordingly. This should bring the greens back very close to the original surface levels requiring only minimal sand mix to be replaced before replanting. The green contours will be adjusted so as to expand pin areas and soften transitions between high and low elevations. Since there is no gravel blanket beneath the greens on this golf course, it will not be necessary to adjust the sub - grade. The subgrade being sand based allows the surface to be adjusted to a greater margin of depth than would be the case with a gravel blanket without causing problems with internal drainage. Nevertheless, the target depth of the rootzone material will still be in the range of 12 inches, plus or minus 2 inches. Greater latitude can be taken in the high and low areas depending on the surface and sub - surface water movement. Page 2 of 6
The area of disturbance around the greens will extend well into the approaches and fairway wrap - around areas in order to make smooth tie -ins and keep water moving to the catch basins. It will also encompass all greenside bunker tops to restore proper design contours for stability and playability. GREENS GRASS SELECTION It is my,recommendation that new Mini Verde bermuda be the replacement grass for the contaminated Mini Verde. I realize this is controversial, but my reasoning is shown as follows: e Mini Verde is still the best ultradwarf to handle the winter play pressure at North Palm Beach, Since Rick has put the greens on the proper management program, the greens are some of the best in the area this winter. TifEagle, on the other hand, has suffered at many courses along the coast due to excessive cloud cover and high temperatures. Mini Verde is more low light tolerant and doing well both at North Palm Beach and The Bears Club. Mini Verde is deeper rooting than either TifEagle or Champion. This is a genetic advantage which gives MV better drought tolerance and a greater margin for stress in general. The risk of contamination from off-type variations of Mini Verde and other bermuda grasses has been reduced to a minimum by the license holder and parent grower, King Ranch. This was accomplished by destroying all existing product at the foundation farm in Cleveland, Texas and eradicating the main production field near Indiantown. The contamination was traced back to Texas and it was here that King Ranch started over. It tools four years before they were ready to produce Mini Verde again after putting a meticulous program in place to identify and eliminate any and all contaminants. This was proven with a trial putting green planting at The Bears Club two years ago which remained clean right up to the replanting of all greens on the golf course last summer with new Mini Verde. 1 have personally seen several instances of off -type variations in TifEagle greens that look very similar to the OTMV patches. Loxahatchee, Lost Tree, and Concession all Page 3 of 6
have these patches, though they do not show up as strongly or in such volume as they did at North Palen Beach CC a few years back. I am not condemning TifEagle for that reason, but I am pointing out that no grass is immune to throwing off types. - Several articles have been written in the past two years addressing this. The key to having clean greens for the longest period lies with the grower' s elimination program in the foundation and production fields. Therefore all grass is at risk for contamination. To help better understand what an off-type grass is, I am including here several links to the articles mentioned above. htt :/ 1 si df.lib.msu.edu /tie df.? file= /article /lowe -off df, http: //gsrpdf.l ib.msu. edo /ticpdf.py?tile= /2000s/200.9/ pdf, littp:// iiiturfseniinar.com/ i-nooi-e handout off-type berm uda sass. pdf FAIRWAY GRASS ROUGHS Page 4 of 6
bunker edges and then going to the larger areas on a priority basis using Bahia health as a guide. If it looks ugly, replace it. As stated earlier, I recommend using Latitude 36 based on what I saw at Loxahatchee. It is superior to 419 in all respects. BUNKERS I ; Chris Cochran made a big concession with regard to the bunkers. It is clear that the " distressed edge" look does not work at North Palm Beach Country Club. Like the Bahia, it needs to go the way of good ideas from an aesthetic viewpoint that went bad in practice. The edges have almost all been. broken down from erosion, maintenance and foot traffic and have now stabilized at the top of the bunker face. If the edges were to be restored to the original design concept, it is likely that the whole process of edge erosion would play out again. Therefore, Chris and I agree that the edge should remain at the top of the face and generally follow the contours that now exist. Chris will add a bit of character to this edge during the green resurfacing, but they will otherwise look much like they do now; It would be a great investment to install a bunker liner, at least in the greenside bunkers, to keep the gravel from continuing to contaminate the sand. Both Better Billy Bunker and Capillary Concrete can be looked at with demonstration bunkers that could be installed this summer. As for the sand, I know you said you are getiing complaints about consistency and depth. Rick is gradually fixing the depth problem, but one has to remember that this is natural sand from the old dune beneath the course. It cannot be perfect like' one would find at the more expensive and exclusive country clubs around Southeast Florida. That sand costs a lot of money. The PGA TOUR no longer requires that host clubs go out and buy expensive designer sand, and neither should your members unless they want to pay for it. Bunkers are still hazards and places that any golfer should not want to be in. We agree that they should be clean, relatively firm and dry, and evenly raked at a depth that will allow a golf club to travel through it without hitting bottom. Your bunkers, or at least the ones that Rick has worked on, meet that criteria. That said, the same sand being used at courses like The Bears Club is available from Florida sand companies. All one has to do is write the check. DRAINAGE If and when the fairways are converted, it would be an excellent time to add more drainage. There are not very many remaining areas that need work, and this would make a big difference in the firmness of the course during wet weather. It already has on holes Rick has worked on. Of course there is still the limitation of the water level in the lakes when it gets too high and that is an engineering issue that hopefully will be resolved one day. In the meantime, installing drains where they are needed for the times when the water is low enough to accept pipe flow is recommended. CART PATHS Not to be forgotten, the course still needs cart path extensions that will help spread cart wear. We have covered this many times in previous reports so I won' t dwell on it. I doubt if there will ever come a time when tee to green cart paths will be constructed on all holes, but the existing Page 5 of 6
paths can still be more effective if the recommendations that were laid out by Chris and me can be added. PRACTICE RANGE I doubt if there is ever a more used practice tee in the county than at North Palm Beach CC. With the advent of light poles, the evening hours yield no rest to the beleaguered turf. Between the foot and divot wear on the tee to the pounding that the range floor takes from the ball retriever it really has no chance. I will say that Rick has done a monumental job of improving both to the point where they are today. I can' t imagine the man -hours of work that go into this effort. That said, there is a limit to what can be done without starting over. That would include the installation of artificial turf on part of the tee and sand capping the floor. Once again, this is a very expensive project. I think the Members would do well to just appreciate what they have. NTIU _ Im- " The reason I didn' t go into any more detail on the condition of the golf course is stated in the first paragraph. I have said many times that all I am looking for in my visits is progress and it was evident in every area I looked at. Is the golf course perfect? No, we' ll reserve that for places that charge a lot more money to belong and play golf. Can improvement still be made? Of course, and the major improvements are discussed in this report. That doesn' t mean that Rick can now sit on his laurels and stop pushing for more. On the contrary, I can see that isn' t in his character. It will be interesting to see just how far he and his staff can go with the conditioning regardless of the course projects discussed during the visit. I look forward to seeing the next installment on my next visit. I wish all the best to you and the North Palm Beach Country Club team. You all can be proud of the work you are doing.
