The clear days and warm summer evenings have provided for endless opportunities to enjoy a round of golf, an afternoon at the pool, dining on the terrace and taking in the live music of Cats at the Gate on Friday evenings. As we transition into late summer and early fall, we still have a host of activities for you and your guests to enjoy at the Club. 6 TURF TALK Tom Saunders Corporate Director of Agronomy Late summer is the time of year when we aerify greens, fairways and tees. We have scheduled the Banks course fairway and green aerification on September 30th and the Palmer course on October 13th. The respective courses will be closed on those dates. We will aerify tees during September and October without having to close the courses. With these late aerification dates, September is the best time of year to play. The warm days and cool nights of late summer are ideal for sodding areas that were lost due to the heat or insects. We have quite a bit of that to do on the Palmer course after our irrigation pump station became finicky during the July heat wave. We did what we could, but with two damaged pumps we had a lot of areas that didn't get the water they required. The pumps have been repaired and the damaged turf will be revived or replaced. The Banks course held up well while hosting significant tournaments such as the US Amateur Qualifier, the NJSGA Four-Ball Championship and the R.A. Schiavone Cup as well as our Club Championships. We raised the height of cut on all greens during the July/August heat wave and it certainly made it much easier to keep them alive and playable during that time. We lowered them once the weather broke and before the Club Championships started. We typically undertake a few projects during this time of year. This year, we will be expanding tees that shrunk over time. We will also continue expanding Banks course greens closer to their original footprint. Last fall we expanded #3, #8, #9, #13, #14, #15 and #16. Work is still needed on #3 and #9 but the others made it through the summer intact. On the Palmer course we would like to bring #3 green back to its original shape and add more putting surface to #10. Both will be significant projects. We will be continuing our Banks course bunker bank refurbishment. We have not decided which ones to tackle, but I believe the two most in need are the left green side bunker on #10 and the right green side bunker on #13. Everyone s participation and wonderful comments throughout the season have definitely not gone unnoticed, and the Grille staff and I hope to continue to make your experience in the restaurants a memorable one. We have a lot of great events in the Grille and Restaurant 37 planned going into this beautiful fall season. First up is Lobster Fest and the last night with the Cats at the Gate to close out the summer. I would like to thank Tom Herrmann and the many great bands that played throughout our summer season. They brought us big crowds and lively music every Friday evening. On September 25th we are having a Catena Wine Dinner in Restaurant 37 which will include a wonderful 4 course meal featuring excellent wines grown in the foothills of the Andes Mountains in Mendoza, Argentina.
