There is still plenty of time to get your yearly pool and golf passes. The golf course is improving weekly and the pool will be opening Memorial Day weekend so why not make plans to come out and enjoy the lodge! On May 13th we kicked off the official opening of our Tiki Bar with Bullet Proof providing the entertainment, fun was had by all that attended. Please check the June calendar to see what the entertainment committee has planned for us this month. We will also have numerous golf outings in the month of June so please come out and join us for a day of fellowship and good times. On April 29th, I attended the State Elks convention in Columbus, Ohio as did quite a few our lodge members. It was truly an absolute honor to be honoring one of our own Elk members as 2017 Elk of the Year. Mike Mason Sr was awarded this honor out of 17 candidates state wide, Mike has been an Elk member for 32 years; his application was sent in by Donnie Flora. CONGRATULATIONS MIKE!!!! May 14th we celebrated Mother s Day at the Elks. We had a fantastic turn out for both sittings and once again the food was excellent. Please if you get a moment, thank the kitchen staff for the work they did that day to make it a great success. On June 11th this month we will be holding our yearly Flag Day service, if you have not seen this service performed before I invite you to attend. We will be honoring retired flags at the end of the service that day also. In closing, I would like to thank all of the members who continually support the lodge, officers and trustees. Dinner Specials June 2 Chicken Enchiladas June 16 Salmon Patties June 23 Spaghetti & Meat Balls June 30 Swiss Steak Name Shelly Watts Kate Willson Nathan Xavier Stephen T Zimmer OHIO ELK OF THE YEAR On April 29, 2017 at the Ohio Elks State Convention in Columbus it was with great honor and pride BPOE #51 members, family, and guests watched Mike Mason be awarded the 2016 Ohio Elk of the Year Award. Mike was nominated for his many selfless contributions in helping our Lodge during his years of membership. His nomination form and acceptance pictures are posted in the Lodge social room for everyone to review.

3 Bill Marine Ladies Golf Invitational Tournament... will be held on Saturday, July 29th with a shotgun 8:30 am and check-in between 7:45 and 8:00 am. A $25 entry fee includes green fees, cart, lunch, refreshments on the course, gift bag and cash prizes. Pick your own foursome or enter as an individual, pair, or threesome and we will put you with a group. The tournament is limited to 72 entrants. This tournament is open to members and non-members; experienced and not so experienced golfers. There are entry forms in the Social Room and at many of the local golf courses. We would like to thank the Bill Marine dealership for their generous support in making this tournament possible at the Springfield Elks Lodge #51 golf course. Veterans/Safety Forces Committee... We will be celebrating Flag Day on Sunday, June 11th at 2:00 pm with the lodge officers performing the annual Flag Day ceremony inside the lodge. All members and guests are invited to attend. Golf Shop... Gouff, gowf, gowff, gouf, golph, goif, golfe. Golf (g.o.l.f.) first appeared in written form in 1457 when King James II banned it and fut bal (football) in lieu of archery. King James IV became a gowfer, spelled it goulf and lifted the ban in Though it doesn t really matter how you spell it or when or where it started, for some it s an obsession, some it s a way to escape the home front or for some of us it s just a hobby and need a laugh. The Scotts are credited for the more modern version we play today, with its rules, regulations and at times, all its aggravations. Maybe that s why they also invented whiskey. The first written record of Scotch Whiskey was in 1495 and the distiller was a Friar named John Cor. So, is it a sin to play golf on the Sabbath? The way some people play golf, it s a sin any day! Maybe you ve heard about duffer Bob who was so bad he has an unplayable lie when he tees it up. He was so bad, to keep from buying balls constantly, he starting putting return addresses on them. Duffer Bob turns to his buddy after putting a ball in the water and says, I m going in after it and drown myself, his buddy replies, do you think you can keep your head down that long? You know the reason a pro tells you to keep your head down? It s so you can t see him laughing at you. I m sure we all have some war stories from the golf course that would either make us laugh or make us cry. I remember or I ll never forget one league night at Snyder Park. Marty Schlicher and I were partners and on number six the short par four, against Marty s advice, hit driver (hey, it was downwind) into the second pond. Dropped and chunked the next ball into the water, they are probably still lying next to each other. Another drop and bladed that shot over the green into a huge pine tree that used to be behind the green. Being the talented player that I am, I stepped through the branches and from my knees, choked down so much neither hand was on the grip and took a whiff at the ball. Not to be deterred swung again and the ball hit a branch and went sideways into the bunker. Dug a little too deep and put that ball, still in the bunker under the lip. If you remember the two tiers on that green, the pin was up top and with no shot at it, went almost sideways and managed to keep it on the front edge of the green. I was actually even par before that hole and the guy I was playing against gave me that thirty footer for a ten. So yeah, I can laugh about it now, then no. But g.o.l.f. is a funny game, so do we blame the Scotts or do we laugh at ourselves for some of the predicaments we get into on the course? You might as well laugh because you should know that the others in your group are laughing at you (with you?). Fairways & Greens, Bob Horner Get Your Foursome Ready!!! 4 Americanism Contest... There will be a pizza party for the winners of the Elks Americanism contest on June 14th at 5:00 pm. Everyone parks at their own risk. Reminder... Members, please remember, you cannot sign anyone s name other than your own for the drawings the quarter and dollar daily and the Building Fund weekly.
