3 CEO S UPDATE BY ADAM WALLISH As we progress through this difficult period I would like to thank participants for their strength and their resolve. We understand that many very good people have been affected by the actions of a few and as we move forward we are committed to providing the best conditions possible in the industry for those that do the right thing. The investigations into the live baiting allegations at the Tooradin Trial Track have resulted in charges being laid. In regard to comment about these matters they will be reserved for after the RADB hears the cases. We are unable to comment further on them at this time. We appreciate your patience and understanding. The Board held a member forum at The Meadows in April to garner the view of the participants on a range of matters. There will be another three member forums held in the coming weeks/months. Dates for these forums are as follows: Warragul Greyhound Racing Club Friday 15 May 4pm - 6pm Ballarat Greyhound Racing Club Tuesday 2 June 5pm - 7pm Shepparton Greyhound Racing Club Tuesday 16 June 12pm - 2pm In other news during April, we introduced a number of changes to grading, with the full details within this edition of the Informer and also available at the GRV website The main change relates to the Associated Greyhounds guideline. This guideline will no longer be applied because of the adverse impact it was having on racing operations. A lack of nominations and support for the guideline meant that nominations for too many meetings were being extended. This meant the guideline didn t function as it was intended. There are a number of changes to grading that are again aimed at increasing the opportunities available to all participants within the sport. We will continually review the changes and are open to feedback on these matters. Finally, I would like to commend the brilliant work of the Greyhound Adoption Program (GAP). April was a sensational month for the program, with 105 adoptions. This is a record for a single month. During April GAP also equalled their single-day adoption record with 24 greyhounds finding new homes at a special Adoption at The Meadows. The continual support from the industry and also the general public for GAP is vital in the ongoing success of the program. The program is something that all participants should be proud of. It is a busy time for the organisation and the industry. Owner Paul Bushell, despite not owning Superman at the time, has fond memories of his victory in the Group 1 Perth Cup in 2006, in which he overpowered the brilliant Trewly Special. Going into the race a lot of people thought Superman wouldn t be able to hold out the super strong Trewly Special, who surprisingly led early on after Superman missed the start slightly. Superman not only caught up to him, but he won running away, and I remember the race caller saying Superman, Trewly Special, Superman super run superstar. It still makes the hair stand up on my neck every time I watch the replay, he said. Superman retired to stud in 2007 and despite limited interest from breeders he currently ranks fourth on Victoria s Metropolitan sires list. His best progeny includes Group 1 winners Kilty Lad and Amakler Girl, as well as Group 2 Horsham Cup winner & track record breaker, Crump. 5 By Andrew Copley PUNTERS Picture courtesy of Paul Munt As Melbournians enjoyed a race glimpse of the lunar eclipse that took place on Saturday April 4, it was ironic that a promising greyhound named Lunar Eclipse won a race at The Meadows in the midst of the unique event. PREMONITION It appeared punters were aware of the omen too, backing the Cameron Bahen-trained greyhound into $2.20 favourtism, and he didn t let them down, winning by a whopping nine lengths in the exceptionally quick time of sec over the 525m. This was the last total lunar eclipse or blood moon to be seen in Australia for some time, with the next one scheduled to occur in 2018.

6 Important changes to Racing and Grading MAY The following grading guidelines will be removed: 1. The application of the LR28.7 Associated Greyhound rule from the Grading Guidelines (1.8) noting it remains within the Local Rules for re-introduction should it be again deemed necessary; APPLICABLE: Meetings graded from 1st May onwards. 2. The $50K restriction on provincial Mixed 4/5 events within the Grading Guidelines (6.3). APPLICABLE: Meetings graded from 1st May onwards. The following grading guidelines will be added: 1. A weekly Ranking Limit meeting in lieu of a current Tier 3 with Grade 5 s to be Non Penalty events. This will be applied to one provincial meeting per week. 2. Standing Advertised Events at Metropolitan Meetings. (All Distances, Restricted Win and GR5, VICBRED and No City Wins) APPLICABLE: Meetings as advertised from 13th May onwards. APPLICABLE: Meetings as advertised from 13th May onwards. 3. Weekly Ranking Limit advertised event at both Metro Provincial meetings (MEP & SAP) with the Grade 5 s also to be Non Penalty. APPLICABLE: Meetings as advertised from 13th May onwards. 4. A Reserve right for the Metro Full Stake meetings; INTRODUCED: June 5. All Qualifying Meetings will be limited to a maximum of 96 greyhounds with Maiden qualifying events using the All Maiden Meeting selection method giving preference to First Starters, and the remaining greyhounds selected at random. Trainers nominating more than one greyhound should advise the graders via of any preference for selection. The aim is to simulate race meeting conditions at qualifying meetings. 6. Graders ability to create a Restricted Win race based on nominations received. This will be at graders discretion and will be used for Greyhounds with 1-6 wins with a focus on Distance racing. 21 GAP Partners with Luxury Five Star Kennel in Melbourne s South East By Andrew Copley The Greyhound Adoption Program is now more easily accessible than ever thanks to a brand new relationship with the Dogs Country Club & Kennel Resort located at Baxter, just a 45 minute drive south east of Melbourne s CBD. The first lot of greyhounds arrived at the established boarding facility late last month, with the venue being described as a five star hotel for canines in which they have their own room (or double room if preferred) complete with television, couch, doggy toys and personal yard to roam around in. The Baxter facility will house eight greyhounds at a time during their final phase of being prepared for adoption. We will be conducting two adoption days out of Baxter each week, with an aim to adopt out eight greyhounds on each of those days, which would mean a total of 16 adoptions per week, said Greyhound Adoption Program Strategic Projects Manager, Sean Stanton. The application process will remain the same, with people filling in an application on line and being matched to a suitable greyhound over the phone from our headquarters in Seymour. So the adoptions that take place at Baxter will all be pre-arranged, with the venue serving purely as a pick up location for new adopters. Stanton said the Baxter facility would provide a relatively central alternative for adopters to pick up their new pet greyhounds at a location just minutes from Melbourne s Peninsula Link freeway. Melbourne s South East & Peninsula precincts are fast growing areas and we receive a lot of applications from that region. Baxter is on the opposite side of Melbourne to Seymour and is easy to get to, so it ticks all the boxes in terms of making it easier for Melbournians to adopt greyhounds as pets, he said.
