Enhancing the quality of life of Hong Kong people has always been a key Club mission. To benefit the widest possible range of people, we have adopted a more proactive approach to ensure that our donations are applied in the most flexible, responsive and cost-effective manner. Our contributions touch all walks of life, ranging from community projects in co-operation with Government and NGO partners, to nurturing interest in Hong Kong s unique musical heritage and launching CADENZA, a Club initiative with the potential to revolutionise the way Hong Kong views and cares for its elderly. Together, we are all contributing to the well-being of Hong Kong. CHARITY
CHARITY SEPTEMBER 05 Education Park to meet young people s training needs The new Jockey Club Education Park was opened to benefit 10,000 young people a year, thanks to a Club donation of HK$2.3 million. The new park is equipped with a series of training facilities to hone the skills of young students, including an assault course, a watchtower, an outdoor cooking oven and a camping ground. OCTOBER 05 TV show encourages young people to show their care for society The Club has long been committed to nurturing the development of Hong Kong s young generation and helping them face the many challenges of growing up. Built around the themes of caring and contribution, a TV extravaganza was specially created to inspire local young people to feel a sense of belonging and caring. Some 4,000 youths and representatives from the Government and academic institutions were invited to enjoy the show at Sha Tin racecourse. 3 CHARITY Me and my shadow: some of the Club mentors who took part in the Job Shadow Day meet their students. Leo Ku was among local stars who supported the Club s Youth Extravaganza. Club mentors light up job shadows More than 100 Club staff members volunteered to act as workplace mentors to 109 secondary students in this year s Hong Kong Jockey Club Job Shadow Days. The students gained hands-on workplace experience through shadowing the various different jobs of their Club mentors, from accountancy to horse care. As well as taking an active part in the annual Job Shadow programme, providing the highest number of work mentors amongst all participating companies this year, the Club is supporting the programme financially for three years from NOVEMBER 05 Asia Pacific s first minimally invasive surgical skills centre Funded by a generous Club donation of HK$28.2 million, Asia Pacific s first multi-disciplinary surgical skills training centre was established at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) to meet urgent needs at the heart of surgery. The CUHK Jockey Club Minimally Invasive Surgical Skills Centre is equipped with cutting edge technologies designed for comprehensive modern surgical training and skills development, in particular for the full range of minimally invasive surgery (MIS) techniques. By enabling more people to be trained in these revolutionary surgical processes, the quality of patient care will be greatly improved. 66
CHARITY Club Deputy Chairman John Chan tours a simulated operating room at The CUHK Jockey Club Minimally Invasive Surgical Skills Centre. Scholars paint rainbow for disabled children Following its inauguration last year, The Jockey Club Scholars Alumni Association presented its first work report at the annual Scholarship Scheme graduation dinner. Notable among the alumni s activities was a community service initiative called The Rainbow Project, organised with the Heep Hong Society. Fifty Jockey Club Scholars volunteered themselves as tutors for a group of disabled children. A series of creative and fun-packed workshops and performances was arranged to help the children develop their potential and boost their confidence. As potential future leaders of the community, the Scholars pledged to continuously strive for the betterment of society. Jockey Club Scholarship alumni (from left) Gary Ng, Vincent Chung, David Zhang and Olivia Zhang have made good use of their success to further their careers and serve the community. 67
CHARITY Among promising young golfers who have benefited from the Kau Sai Chau public facilities over the past 10 years is Hong Kong Junior Squad member Steven Lam, 13, right. Officiating at the groundbreaking ceremony for the 3rd course are Club Chairman Ronald Arculli (right), Secretary for the Environment, Transport and Works Sarah Liao (middle) and Chairman of the Jockey Club Kau Sai Chau Public Golf Course Management Committee Paul Cheng (left). JANUARY 06 A milestone in Hong Kong s golfing facilities The Jockey Club Kau Sai Chau Public Golf Course notched up a successful first decade of popularising golf in Hong Kong and celebrated by breaking the ground for a third 18-hole course to be opened on Kau Sai Chau by late In addition to providing a much-needed expansion of Hong Kong s sole public golfing facility, the new East course will pave the way for development of the city s first multi-function Golf Academy. The new academy will enable Hong Kong to train its own skilled professionals in golf course management, as well as extend the coaching of elite golfers to grass roots level. In developing the third new golf course, the Trust has also put in place a unique funding mechanism to drive the quest for new excellence. It has committed a total of HK$184 million towards the estimated HK$300 million cost of the East course, with the rest being met from accumulated cashflow of the existing management company, The Jockey Club Kau Sai Chau Public Golf Course Ltd. Furthermore, the Trust s donation will effectively be repaid from future operational cash flows into a new development fund called The Jockey Club Kau Sai Chau Development Fund, which will reinvest the money into a series of longterm, golf-related and community developments on the island. As with the first two courses, great care is being taken to ensure that the new East Course not only complements the beautiful natural setting of Kau Sai Chau, but also provides positive environmental benefits. Indeed, HK$50 million of the total HK$184 million grant has been provided specifically for conservation measures. Such strong commitment to environmental protection has won the Club accreditation as a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary from US-based environmental education body Audubon the first golf course in China to win this distinction. 68
CHARITY FEBRUARY 06 Explosion of culture at Magazine site The public will soon be able to learn more about Asia s cultures and arts development at a heritage building in Admiralty, transformed from a former explosives magazine while preserving its historical integrity. The new equipment will enable a higher number of patients to benefit from this technology as well as detecting smaller lesions. Hong Kong s unique musical heritage on show at Racing Museum The Hong Kong Racing Museum staged the public exhibition, Gems of Chinese Music~Heritage for the Future, showcasing the world s most important collection of historic Chinese music materials and examining the development of Chinese music and Chinese opera in Hong Kong. The valuable items on display were on loan to the museum from the Chinese Music Archive of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, which is being supported by a Club donation of HK$3.76 million over five years. Among the items on display were collections of manuscripts, books and scores; Chinese musical instruments; replicas of ancient Chinese instruments; 78 rpm records; costumes and stage photos of famous Cantonese opera partners Yam Kim Fai and Pak Suet Sin; and libretti with Yam s handwriting. Thanks to Pak s generosity, the famous Yam-Pak duo s costumes in The Fragrant Death - the final scene of one of their most popular operas, The Floral Princess were also on display. This not only gave visitors a chance to recall memories of Yam-Pak s performance but also to appreciate the significance of this traditional art form to Hong Kong s heritage and education. 7 CHARITY C.A.R.E. volunteers led by Secretary for the Environment, Tranport & Works Sarah Liao (third from right) and Club Steward Anthony Chow (third from left) dig in to help restore Hong Kong s country parks. APRIL 06 Club paints a greener Hong Kong In the past two years, hill fires have caused several major devastations in Hong Kong s country parks. As a strong supporter of environmental conservation, the Club has donated HK$5.07 million to the Environment, Transport and Works Bureau to launch a Rehabilitation Planting Project to restore the natural habitat. A total of 390,000 seedlings will have been planted in the affected country parks by the end of the two-year project. On 29 April, 300 C.A.R.E.@hkjc volunteers and their family members joined forces to support this good cause by planting some 700 seedlings near the Tai Tong Nature Trail in Yuen Long. In view of the pressing need, 120,000 seedlings had already been planted earlier in Tai Lam Country Park and the proposed Lantau North Country Park (Extension) by the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department. The remaining 270,000 seedlings are being planted in phases in other affected areas. Club Steward Anthony Chow and Mrs Chow are joined by Patrick Chung (right), Chairman of Adventure-Ship, at the launch of the Jockey Club Huan. MAY 06 Ride the Storm Adventure training ship Huan which has been in service for nearly 30 years deserves everyone s salute. Her successor Jockey Club Huan has now taken up the role of providing nautical training to more than 6,000 young people each year, including disabled and underprivileged children. In view of the need for a purpose-built training ship to meet the needs of people with disabilities, the Club donated HK$24 million in 2001 to build this new vessel. Organised by Adventure-Ship Ltd, the nautical training is aimed at strengthening team spirit among the young participants, giving them a chance to discover their potential and develop self-confidence and character in a challenging nautical environment. 70
CHARITY Jockey Club Student Village II The Club believes that students of tertiary institutions should be provided with an environment conducive to balancing the pursuit of academic knowledge with cultural and social interaction among fellow students on campus. Its latest contribution is the Jockey Club Student Village II, at The University of Hong Kong, funded with a Club donation of HK$42 million. The student village provides live-in accommodation, study and leisure facilities for 900 local and overseas students. Revolutionising public views on the elderly With Hong Kong facing the worldwide problem of an ageing population, coupled with the negative attitudes that many people have towards the elderly, the Club took the initiative to launch CADENZA: A Jockey Club Initiative for Seniors, to revolutionise the way Hong Kong views and cares for its elderly population. This wide-reaching community project is being supported with Club funding of up to HK$380 million over five years. With the support of the Elderly Commission, the Health, Welfare and Food Bureau, the Social Welfare Department and leading experts from academia, the project is aimed at changing the attitude and mindset of the general public to prevent elderly issues from becoming a growing problem and burden to society. CADENZA, which stands for Celebrate their Accomplishments; Discover their Effervescence and Never-ending Zest as they Age, will be rolled out in phases with different emphasis, starting with a campaign to build public awareness of elderly issues, which is a crucial element to achieve the necessary change in attitudes. To draw public attention to the project, three local celebrities Do Do Cheng, Leo Ku and Woo Kai Sau (Woo Fung) were appointed as Ambassadors for the programme to help promote the public education activities. CADENZA Club Chairman Ronald Arculli joins students of Lee Shau Kee Hall at The University of Hong Kong to celebrate their winning the Jockey Club Trophy after raising HK$40,000 in a walkathon. Hong Kong SAR Chief Executive Donald Tsang, (centre), is joined by Chairman of the Elderly Commission Dr Leong Che-hung (left) and Club Chairman Ronald Arculli at the launch of CADENZA. 71
