4 Letter from the Director Dear Friends of the Museum, Spring is always one of the most exciting times in thoroughbred racing. The Triple Crown season begins to heat up and we allow ourselves to dream of the sport s next superstar and whether this will be the year America meets its 12 th Triple Crown winner. It is a season of hope and dreams in racing and one of excitement at the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame. The Museum has several upcoming events we hope you will want to be a part of as well as some exciting new features for all racing fans to enjoy. To kick off the Triple Crown season the Museum will be playing host to a Kentucky Derby party on May 2 with a theme of Bacon, Brims and Brews. The Museum has partnered with a dedicated and vibrant local working committee for what will surely be the premier social event of the season. After celebrating the Derby in May we turn to the Belmont Stakes in June. Once again, the Museum will charter a bus to Belmont Park for the culminating event in the Triple Crown series. Belmont Stakes day will feature nine graded stakes races, making it the richest day in American racing outside of the Breeders Cup. Along with these great events, we are proud to open a new exhibit this spring, The Sanford Legacy, which chronicles the importance of the Sanford family in thoroughbred racing. It is a story that is both important in Saratoga and nationally. Through unique artifacts, artwork and video, this new exhibit will both entertain and inform about a fascinating family whose accomplishments in the sport still resonate today. Later in the spring, the Museum will unveil its Treasures of the Vault exhibit in the McBean Gallery, featuring some of the oldest and most prestigious items in our permanent collection in honor of our 65 th anniversary. As 2015 marks the 65 th anniversary of the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame we celebrate both our past and present while also looking ahead to many great events in the sport and at the Museum. We hope you will be a part of these wonderful experiences and enjoy all the Museum has to offer. We look forward to your visit and continued support. 11 Ask the Historian with Allan Carter Q. When Rachel Alexandra won the 2009 Woodward, many writers stated that it was the first time a 3-year-old filly had beaten older males in a Grade 1 race. 12 Curator s Corner with Victoria Tokarowski Scrapbook of Mr. Stephen Sanford s Sergeant Murphy winner Grand National 1923 Leather-bound album featuring photographs and sketches Gift: Estate of Mary D. Sanford This installment of the Curator's Corner highlights a very special treasure from our Permanent Collection that documents the first victory of an American-owned horse in one of steeplechase racing s crown jewels, the British Grand National. Sergeant Murphy, owned by Stephen Laddie Sanford, won this prestigious racing event at the age of 13, after finishing fourth in two previous starts. Of the 27 starters, only seven horses finished the grueling 41/2-mile course at Aintree. Trained by George Blackwell and ridden by Captain Bennett, Sergeant Murphy s victory awarded the winning connections an audience with the King of England, who offered his congratulations after an amazing finish. A slideshow featuring many of the photographs contained in this album is currently featured in our newest special exhibition, The Sanford Legacy, which is on display in the Contemporary Racing Gallery through The Alfred Z. Solomon Sesquicentennial Exhibit closed in December, but visitors to the Museum can still learn about the rich history of Thoroughbred racing in Saratoga Springs by visiting our Lower Lobby! The timeline exhibit panels, which break down the history of the sport into various eras, have now been installed in this newly created exhibit space. A model of Saratoga Race Course and other items, including a historic poster advertising the racing meet of the Saratoga Association, can be found within this exhibit.

13 Hall of Fame Inductee Spotlight with Brien Bouyea According to legend, Al Hoots had a vision as he was dying that his mare Useeit would be bred to Col. E. R. Bradley s stallion Black Toney and that the resulting foal would win the Kentucky Derby. A few years later, Black Gold fulfilled Hoots prophecy and won the Kentucky Derby during his Hall of Fame career. Useeit won 34 times in 122 career starts from 1909 through 1916, including a win over the great Pan Zareta. Hoots raced her at county fairs in Oklahoma until he learned of larger purses in Mexico. He took Useeit to the old track in Juarez and entered her in a claiming race, which was known as a selling race at the time. (Black Gold, Credit: NMR Collections) Useeit won the race and was claimed in the process. Hoots, ignorant of the rules of selling races, refused to surrender Useeit, protecting his ownership with a shotgun when track officials wanted to claim his prized mare. Threatened again by the Juarez track officials, Hoots slipped out of town with Useeit and was forever barred from racing south of the border. After his death, Hoots widow, Rosa, convinced Bradley to let her breed Useeit to Black Toney. A short time later, oil was discovered on Mrs. Hoots property in Oklahoma and the widow became rich. When Useeit foaled her Black Toney colt at Bradley s Idle Hour Stock Farm in February 1921 it was given the appropriate name of Black Gold. Trained by Hanley Webb, Black Gold made his debut in Louisiana at Fair Grounds with a six-length victory in January He won his first stakes race, the Bashford Manor Stakes, that May at Churchill Downs and finished his juvenile season with a from 18 starts and earnings of $19,163. After winning the Louisiana Derby as a 3-year-old, Black Gold won the 50th running of the Kentucky Derby before a crowd estimated at 80,000 to fulfill the dream of Al Hoots. Black Gold became the first horse bred and owned by a woman to win the Derby. He added victories in the Ohio State Derby at Cleveland s Maple Heights Park and the Chicago Derby at Hawthorne that year, finishing his 3-year-old campaign with a record of from 13 starts and earnings of $91,340. Black Gold was retired to stud in late 1924 because of unsoundness in his left foreleg. In his three seasons as a stallion, Black Gold produced only one foal, a colt that was killed in a lightning strike. After almost three years away from the races, Black Gold was put back in training late in He was winless in three starts that December and was reportedly lame. In January 1928, Black Gold was entered in the Salome Handicap at Fair Grounds. He began to make a move entering the stretch, but tragically broke his troublesome left foreleg. Despite the efforts of his rider to pull him up, Black Gold fought on and finished the race. The injury was fatal and Black Gold was buried in the track s infield.
