The Grande Semaine of Fontainebleau For 36 years now, the Grande Semaine breeding week has been attracting enthusiasts in the equine sector to this outstanding late summer gathering. More than 1,850 horses aged from 2 to 7-years-old are invited to compete in two disciplines: Show Jumping and Show Hunter. The season got off to a difficult start with a rhinopneumonia epizootic in France that lasted several weeks, but 2018 looks set to be a wonderful Grande Semaine of Fontainebleau. The remarkable economic upturn of recent times is encouraging socio-professionals to come to Fontainebleau for either the first time or a return visit. Everyone involved in the sector dreams of winning the Young Horses Championship, whether they are breeders who work hard day in day out to produce the best horses, riders who train and develop the products of French breeding, or owners who always try to find that rare gem before anyone else does. The championship title is highly coveted but more than anything else, it is the proof of excellence, as the top horses demonstrate every year with their performances in international competitions. For all those watching, reaching the finals of the young horses circuit is a sign of a properly trained, experienced and skilled horse, all qualities that prove the excellence of the French circuit. Part enthusiasts gathering, part professional meeting, the Grande Semaine of Fontainebleau brings everyone together. It attracts a combination of small breeders and well-known stallion owners, professional and amateur riders along with the owners of their horses as well as dealers who come to pick their future acquisitions. It also brings together institutions from the breeding sector as well as National Breed Associations such as the Selle Français, which organises its own Filly Event, and Anglo-Arabian horses come to prove their studbook s pedigree. The Regional Breed Associations also take advantage of the event to meet their members. The world of French breeding continues to progress on a daily basis to ensure that it stays at the top of the international rankings every year. New for this year on the Cycle Libre (amateur category) circuit: the finals will take place over three days rather than two, as has been the case in previous years. This new development means that amateur riders can experience a real final, with a reasonable timetable and with a primary goal: training young horses from start to finish. The finals for 6-year-olds in their 2nd or 3rd year of competition will therefore involve three classes, with time only being used to separate out the starters in the final and the consolation class. 4
The Grande Semaine of Fontainebleau We are expecting almost 800 horses for the Cycle Libre (amateur category) from 24 to 26 August which then leads into the Cycle Classique (professional category) from 28 August to 2 September, where over 1,000 horses will be competing for the 7 championship trophies. The Hunter Style discipline continues to evolve and the finals will take place during the Cycle Classique (professional category) weekend. This mean bigger audiences and greater visibility for the finals. All the classes at the Grande Semaine will be filmed and broadcast live on shf-video.com in France and on Clipmyhorse.TV for international audiences, thus benefiting from more international visibility than ever. 5
Modifications to the Rules in 2018 Few changes have been made to the rules of the jumping classes for the 2018 season, in order to be more consistent and allow the results to be analysed. In the Cycle Libre (amateur category), the national finals for six-year-old horses in their second and third year of competition will now take place over three days. This is aimed at preparing the horses for adult life and looking at how consistent they are before the winners are determined in a class against the clock. 6
Qualification requirements SHOW HUNTER To be accepted at the National Final, the young horse must have obtained the following placing in the Show Hunter category to which its belongs (4,5 or 6-years-old), between 1 January of the current year and the day before the show: either a first place (16 above), or two second places (mark greater than or equal to 14 but less than 16). CYCLE LIBRE (AMATEUR CATEGORY) The classification requirements for the Grande Semaine of Fontainebleau National Finals are as follows: Cycle libre (amateur category) 4-year-old horses in their first year of competition: 70 euros of prize money at show jumping breeding events won since the beginning of the year, of which at least 49 euros won in Cycle libre classes (for 4-year-old horses in their first year of competition - amateur category); the additional prize money may be won in Cycle Classique show jumping classes for 4-year-old horses (professional category) or Formation 1 or in Cycle libre show jumping classes (4-year-old classes for horses in their first year of competition - amateur category). Cycle libre (amateur category) 5-year-old horses in their first year of competition (amateur category): 60 euros of prize money at show jumping breeding events won since the beginning of the year, of which at least 42 euros won in Cycle libre classes (for 5-year-old horses in their first year of competition - amateur category); the additional prize money may be won in Cycle Classique Formation 1, Formation 2 or 5-year-old Qualifier show jumping classes, (professional category), or in Cycle libre show jumping classes (for 5-year-old horses in their first and second year of competition - amateur category). Cycle libre 6-year-old horses in their second year of competition (amateur category): 105 euros of prize money at show jumping breeding events won since the beginning of the year, of which at least euros won in Cycle libre classes (for 6-year-old horses in their second year of competition - amateur category); the additional prize money may be won in Cycle Classique Formation 2, Formation 3 or 6-year-old Qualifier show jumping classes, (professional category), or in Cycle libre show jumping classes (for 6-year-old horses in their second and third year of competition - amateur category). Cycle libre 6-year-old horses in their third year of competition (amateur category): 120 euros of prize money at show jumping breeding events won since the beginning of the year, of which at least 84 euros won in Cycle libre classes (for 6-year-old horses in their third year of competition - amateur category); the additional prize money may be won in Cycle Classique Formation 3 or 6-year-old Qualifier show jumping classes or in Cycle libre show jumping classes (for 6-year-old horses in their third year of competition - amateur category). 7
Qualification requirements CYCLE CLASSIC (PROFESSIONAL CATEGORY) The classification requirements for the Grande Semaine de Fontainebleau National Finals are as follows: 4-year-old SF-AA horses (horses registered in the Selle Français or Anglo-Arabian studbooks): the number of points required will be available at the beginning of August corresponding to the prize money won in qualifiers multiplied by the mark awarded for the horse s conformation during the CIR (inter-regional horse show). 4-year-old horses registered in ASB (autres stud books - other stud books): the amount of prize money required will be available at the beginning of August 5-year-old SF-AA horses: 790 euros of prize money won in Cycle Classique show jumping classes since the beginning of the year. 5-year-old horses registered in ASB (autres stud books - other stud books): 340 euros of prize money won in Cycle Classique show jumping classes since the beginning of the year. 6-year-old SF-AA horses: 970 euros of prize money won in Cycle Classique show jumping classes since the beginning of the year. 6-year-old horses registered in ASB (autres stud books - other stud books): 280 euros of prize money won in Cycle Classique show jumping classes since the beginning of the year. 8
The Show Hunter Finals The Cycle Libre Show Hunter classes are organised by generation. This discipline consists of jumping over a series of obstacles in the smoothest way. The horse s jumping style, its balance, its gaits, its cadence, its conformation and its grooming are judged by the SHF jury. For 4, 5 and 6-year-old horses: A qualifying class comprising 2 rounds in a row. 1 final comprising 2 rounds also for all the horses which have obtained a mark greater than or equal to 14 during the qualifying class. A conformation, distinction and aptitude for the discipline class for the horses qualified for the Final. For the horses which have not obtained the minimum mark of 14, a consolation class is organised. The Cycle Libre Finals The Cycle Libre is for amateur riders who want to train their young horses on training courses that are organised during the weekend. The training cycle takes places over 3 years: Cycle Libre 1st year for 4 and 5-year-old horses (CL1-4 and CL1-5) Cycle Libre 2nd year for 5 and 6-year-old horses (CL2-5 and CL2-6) Cycle Libre 3rd year for 6-year-old horses (CL3) The five-year-old horses are authorised to compete in the Cycle libre 1 category insofar as they didn t take part in this category when they were four. The six-year-old horses are authorised to compete in the Cycle libre 2 category insofar as they haven t taken part in more than two years of competition. This year, the Cycle Libre circuit s national finals will start on the Friday of the Grande Semaine. This major change to the schedule has come about because the show jumping committee is hoping to achieve two things: Giving the six-year-old horses a final worthy of their age and skills by organising 3 classes, Enabling participants to take full advantage of their final in a less rushed and more pleasant atmosphere. 9
The Cycle Libre Finals For 4 and 5-year-old horses, the competition takes places in two rounds. The first round which is not against the clock, will also feature a dressage and style score awarded by expert SHF judges. The top third is then selected for the final while the remaining two thirds participate in the consolation class. Both final and consolation class are not against the clock. Bonus points won during the regional finals help separate out the combinations. They can be awarded between 0.5 and 2 points depending on their results: 0.5 points for a 4-fault round and 1 point for a clear round, with the regional final consisting of two rounds. This is a revolutionary change for 6-year-old horses in their 2nd and 3rd year of competition, which will now see them competing over three days: two qualifying classes followed by the final and the consolation class. The first round is not against the clock and all those who jump clear will be ranked first. The second round is against the clock to separate out the joint winning combinations from the previous round. Horses ranked in the top third with accumulated points from the first and second rounds will go through to the Final, which is against the clock. The remaining two thirds compete in the consolation class which is also against the clock. 10
The Cycle Classique Finals The Cycle Classic is intended for professional riders and is open to horses which are from 4 to 6-years-old. Each generation benefits from a suitable level of competition with the objective of training and promoting the new generation of sport horses. To be qualified for one of the finals of the Grande Semaine of Fontainebleau, a horse must have won enough prize money on the SHF circuit throughout the season. The amount of prize money required is determined by the Société Hippique Française according to each age category. Once they are qualified for Fontainebleau, the horses still have to perform well in the qualifying classes (not against the clock and not with a jump off) which represent the first stage of the organisation of the finals of Fontainebleau. Only the best horses from each generation will have the chance to take part in the Final and be placed in the championship ranking. A consolation class is organised for the others. The SF-AA-CSAN Championship For the 4-year-olds: A qualifying class with a mark awarded for jumping style and dressage The Final for 30% of the best stallions /geldings and mares overall The consolation class for the remaining 70% of stallions /geldings and mares overall For the 5-year-olds:: Two qualifying classes with a mark awarded for jumping style and dressage during each round An in-hand presentation to judge the conformation, gaits and preservation of the 70 best horses The Final for the 70 best stallions /geldings and mares overall The consolation class for the 70 remaining stallions/geldings and mares overall For the 6-year-olds: 2 qualifying classes An in-hand presentation to judge the conformation, gaits and preservation of the 50 best horses The Final for the 50 best stallions /geldings and mares overall The consolation class for the 50 remaining stallions/geldings and mares overall 11
The Cycle Classique Finals For the 6-year-olds, after the qualifiers, only the 50 best horses are qualified, to which are added the horses that jumped double clear and the winners (best mare and best stallion/gelding) from the qualifying classes. For all the horses, a specific ranking is established according to the sex of the horse, with a mare ranking and a stallion/ gelding ranking. ASB (Autre Studbooks - Other Stud Books) National Finals Two qualifying classes and specific finals are organised for the horses registered in other stud books. They will take place just after the SF-AA-CSAN horse classes. For the 4-year-olds, a qualifying round, a final and a consolation class are organised. The 5 and 6-year-olds are separated out in two qualifying classes to be qualified for the final or the consolation class. These classes tables are identical to those for SF-AA-CSAN horse classes. SF-AA-CSAN. 12
The 7-year-old French Championships Jointly organised with the Fédération Française d Equitation, the 7-year-old Championships are open to the 200 best 7-year-old horses featured on the qualification list extracted from the 7-year-old Grand Prix permanent standings. This qualification list ranks the 7-year-old horses according to their performances in the first quarters of the national and international TOP 7 classes. The qualification list starts on January 2018 and is finalised on Friday 17 August The French Championships are made up of three legs, including the final in two rounds: Wednesday 29 August: Table A type obstacles and track judged under Table C Thursday 30 August: Table A not against the clock, with no jump-off, (speed 375 m/min) Saturday 1 September: Final in two rounds, Table A not against the clock, (speed 375 m/min) Round 1: Only the 40 best horse and rider combinations after the first two legs can take part in the first round of leg three. In the event of several combinations being placed in joint 40th position, all those placed in 40th position will be selected. Round 2: it can take place over a shorter and higher course. The 20 best competitors after the first two legs and the first round of the third leg will be qualified for the second round. In the event of several combinations being placed in joint 20th position, all those placed in 20th position will be selected. The horse and rider combination which has the least penalty points at the end of the overall standings of all three legs will be the champion. 13

Breeding events The Grande Semaine breeding week more than lives up to its name, as it not only brings together everyone involved in the sector but also horses of all ages, from foals to 7-year-olds. So alongside the national show jumping Cycle Libre, Cycle Classique and Hunter Style finals, you can also watch: The Selle Français Fillies Event After eight days of qualifiers throughout France, the Selle Français Studbook organises the national final for fillies which will go on to be broodmares and competitors, within the framework of the Grande Semaine of Fontainebleau. For three days on 30 August, 1 and 2 September, the fillies will be judged on their conformation, gaits, free jumping as well as on genetic criteria. With the support of the Association Régionale des Eleveurs d Ile de France (ADECSIF; Ile de France Regional Breeders Association). The regional competition for foals, with the aim of characterising and selecting pony and horse foals of all breeds under one-year-old. For breeders, this is a key opportunity to showcase their breeding, compare their products and talk about differences in stock. These highlights of the French breeders calendar will give the public a chance to find out about the work breeders do with their young stock alongside their 4 to 7-year-olds. 15
SHF Video new features Set up in 2017, SHF-video is now in its second year of operation. There is huge demand for the service in the professional sector and it has worked well at the various shows as well as enhancing the sales and marketing support provided by the SHF. Before the service was only available via a subscription, but now it is possible to buy a single video for 12 including tax. There are two packages on offer for circuit users. The 20-video package enables the user to follow the entire season of one horse or more for only 60 including tax. Lastly, the unlimited package for 120 including tax has been designed for riders or owners who own several horses on the circuit. The videos are permanently available on the shf-video.com website and on mobiles or tablets via the SHF video app. Riders and owners have constant access to the videos wherever they are, enabling them to react quickly to purchase requests for horses and watch the videos whenever they want. Owners can also promote their horses by publishing their videos on the public video library. They can then be viewed by everyone. Conversely, a bad video can be deleted or simply not published so that it cannot be viewed by the public. The SHF-video image database works closely with SHF-market to ensure that advertisements for horses for sale can be enhanced by inserting videos produced by the service, therefore also showcasing the production of young horses in France. In its second year of operation, SHF video will cover around 130 young horse events for 2 to 7-year-olds. 106 show jumping Cycle Classique, Cycle Libre and pony competitions and all the Grandes Semaines will be broadcast live. Events in the 3 competition arenas at the Grande Semaine of Fontainebleau will be broadcast simultaneously. The SHF stand next to the Main Arena grandstand features SHF Video terminals where visitors can watch live or recorded broadcasts of the finals. 16

Throughout the Grande Semaine breeding week over 80 exhibitors will be presenting their new products from all equestrian areas: saddlery, food, transport, veterinary products, ready-to-wear, boot makers, saddle makers, websites, stock breeding, and not forgetting the many catering outlets that will be open all day. The Breed and Breeders Associations are all grouped in one tent with partners from horse institutions and dealers. Every year, almost 120,000 visitors, riders, owners and those accompanying them mill around the walkways of the exhibitors village and in the stands of the Grand Parquet.
