PRCBA President s Report: James Hunter Hello PRCBA Membership and Board, It s been a great summer for me. Although I do not have many Palominos to show at Indianapolis, I did take the time to take a closer look at my herd and I eliminated quite a few herd rabbits and prospect rabbits. I believe I may have taken 25 or 30 live cull rabbits to a wild animal park near Wichita. I don t butcher my own, so I m thankful to have that park available to take my culls. Before the year is over, I may be down to only a handful. With the cost of feed the way it is, I see no sense in feeding them if they won t ever do me any good. A while back I had a good friend who thought mosquitos were causing sores on the Palominos in her barn. I don t know why I didn t think of this sooner. As most of you know if you put two and two together, eliminating the insect causing the problem is the best way to minimize the problem. Dumping any container that could collect and hold rainwater near the barn is one way. That will get rid of the nursery where the eggs are laid and the larvae develop. Spraying an effective pesticide is another possible solution to the insect problem. However, I would like to propose a more environmentally friendly method of protecting your rabbits from those flying vectors. There are many house plants, as well as bedding plants, that are available from your local greenhouse that actually repel those pesky critters that may cause problems in your barn. I know this because my wife purchased a few citronella and lemon grass plants to set out on our patio this summer. She and I like to sit on the patio in the cool mornings and in the evenings, during the summer. Mosquitos and other various types of flies just don t even come around. There are several websites that list those kind of plants. The most complete list I found is at the Wikipedia site listed here: I m hoping to see many of you at Indianapolis this fall. The convention dates are early this year and having your animals in good fur at that time will be a challenge. Especially for those of us who live in the central or southern parts of our country. I would like to wish all of the members who are planning to attend this year s convention the best of luck! I am truly looking forward to seeing my friends in the PRCBA. Hopefully, I ll get to meet some of you who are new to the club and some of the long-time members whom I ve never had the opportunity to meet. My prayers at this time of year include safe passage for all of the breeders who will be on the highways to Indy from their homes, as well as safe passage back to their homes from Indianapolis. I hope we have a tremendous exhibit of Palominos at Indianapolis this year and, if you happen think of it before you leave for Indy please take along one or two nice raffle items for our booth s raffle table. Good luck to all who plan to make that trip. I d like to mention one last thing before I close. It will be time to breed for the spring national palomino show when you return home from Indy. I wish for you great success in that endeavor! I m certain there will be more about that show elsewhere in this issue. Breed to the Standard and be a Pal to the Pals! JIM

Dear PRCBA Members, Hope you have all had a good summer and plenty of successful litters in your barns. I was fortunate that the majority of the does I bred for convention in Indy took and I have a good number of pals to choose from for convention. I had the opportunity and honor to judge many 4-H fairs this summer. I was very impressed with the quality of the rabbits the youth had and it made me feel good that our hobby is in the hands of some really impressive youth members. My wife and I had a wonderful event take place at the end of summer. We have taken in two young boys through the foster care system. We feel very blessed to have them come and live with us. I m excited to report that they have already attended their first show and loved it. Looks like the ARBA and PRCBA has gained two more youth members! I am hoping for safe travels for everyone involved with the rabbit hobby as they make their way to convention in Indiana. I m sure everyone will have a great time and enjoy the festivities. Update on our convention judge: Our originally scheduled judge, Johnny Haussner, accepted a full-time, tenure tract teaching position with a school district teaching language arts. As a result of his new employment he did not feel comfortable taking time off at the beginning of his first year teaching with a new school district to attend convention. I understand his concern and wish Johnny the best of luck at his new school and in his teaching career. When I received notice that Johnny was unavailable to judge, I worked closely with the convention breed-judging chair, Caleb Thomas, and Jim Hunter to select a replacement judge for our breed. I am grateful that Lowell Trausch accepted our offer and look forward to working with him at convention while he is judging our breed. I hope everyone has a great experience at convention and enjoys their time with fellow PRCBA members and their time in Indy. JIM BROWN Cliff King Best in Show and Reserve in Show Wyoming State Fair Golden Senior Doe Both on the same day!

PRCBA Treasurer s Report and Club Promotional Items: Terri King I am working on the last of the fiscal year. I will have a full report in Indy (as my computer was in the shop). The club account is looking good. I am seeing more sanction and membership which is great for the pals. I do have the Promotion items shirts, pens, and patches. Just me for more information or look on the web site I have them listed. I have so ideas for the booth so anyone wanting to help I would gladly take it. PLEASE REMBER TO BRING RAFFLE ITEMS. See you in Indy. Terri District 1 Report: Cliff King We are winding down from county fair and Wyoming state fair. Terri is the assistant superintendent and county fair and the superintendent at the state fair and I am the guy who hauls and sets up the show tables. We had great show at the state fair, we had the largest ones so far since we started having ARBA shows. We put on a double show. We squeezed in some shows while all this was going on. We did very well. Had a 4th runner up, 3 rd runner up, 2 Reserve in shows, and 1 Best in show, all with the same sr. golden doe. 1 of the RIS and the BIS was on the same day. We haven t done that in a long time. We are going through all the rabbits to see which ones will be making the trip to Indy. Entry deadline is coming up soon. Convention will be here before you know. Everyone need to make sure they bring something for the raffle. The more item the better. Looking forward to seeing old friends. Keep promoting our great breed and keep bring in new breeders. The club is also working to get pay pal so we can pay for promo items, sanctions, and membership. The club is working with our website editor to get this set up. Hopefully everyone will agree with this. It would be a great asset to the club. Take care and God bless America! Cliff King Please support our club by donating an item for the Palomino Club Booth Raffle at convention

District 3 Report: Tom Lowin Its been slow here in District 3. July was very hot, as expected, but we we ve been in a severe drought which, makes it worse. However, one good note: A young showman from Pierre, SD, received the Grand Champion award at the local 4-H Achievement Days with his Golden Senior Palomino Buck. Nice to see a Palomino win it again. I have only attended one show this summer (August) at the Sioux Empire Fair in Sioux Falls. I had the only Palominos there. Poor fur/coat conditions was the primary problem with most rabbits. Next up is the SD State Fair that runs during the Labor Day Weekend. Be seeing some of you in Indianapolis in about a month. Looking forward to it. Tom Lowin District 5 Report: Beth Thurn Hello from Kansas. We had some very hot weather at our county fair time in July, but overall a pretty pleasant summer. My rabbits and I appreciate the cooler summer temperatures. We attended the Sunflower and Scholarship June show in Wichita. There were 22 Palominos and five breeders. It is always good to see people we have known for years and good to get to visit with new rabbit friends. Beth Thurn Mike Raab Reserve 6 Class Indiana State RBA Golden Palomino

District 8 Report: Mike Raab I am looking forward to meeting other Pal breeders and making new friends at the upcoming ARBA convention in Indianapolis. I am finalizing plans to setup a Pal banquet at the ARBA convention. I will have more info on this in the next week or two. I recently been having trouble with dysentery in my rabbits and trying multiple actions to eliminate it and find the reason why it occurs. I have heard from multiple other breeders in Indiana having the same problem. I started feeding a lot more hay to my rabbits, and it helped some. But, it did not totally resolve the problem. After talking to another local breeder that was having a lot of the same issues, he mentioned about water quality. He used well water and I also was using well water. Could it be that our well water was causing the dysentery problems? After doing some research, I decided to add Chlorox to my drinking water for the rabbits. I have been adding bleach to the water for at least 2 weeks, and not had another problem in my rabbits. I was amazed; I found the solution to the problem! I told my fellow breeder that was also having the same issues. He started adding bleach, and he also corrected the problem. So, if anyone is having the same issues as I am, you might want to consider checking your water quality and correcting it, if necessary. If anyone would like more info on this subject, you can reach out to me for more info. I attached a photo of my nice win at the Indiana State RBA show in August. Reserve 6 class win.
