KATHLEEN MCCOY Kathy was educated in classical dressage at the University of Berlin, Germany. Riding and training professionally for over 20 years, she specializes in dressage, but happily works with all breeds and disciplines, as dressage can help any horse. Her greatest influence was Dr. Reiner Klimke, who was known for his kind and gentle techniques. Kathleen s training philosophy is stongly based on the German system, utilizing the training pyramid, with a particular focus on good communication and harmony between horse and rider. She is pursuing USDF Instructor Certification, having successfully completed all Pre- Cert Workshops (lungeing, riding, teaching) and the Pre-Certification Testing. She s an experienced competitor and coach for students interested in showing and has judged schooling shows thru 3rd Level. She has been invited to teach clinics for Pony Club and Mounted Police, and has attended numerous USDF Symposiums. All aspects of horsemanship are included in lessons: theory, groundwork, position and how it affects the horse, biomechanics and timing (rather than strength) of the aids. Contact her at or kathleenmccoydressage@gmail.com
5 COURTNEY KELLY Courtney recently achieved the USDF Silver medal, and has 22 years of riding experience which began in Oregon where she rode and showed in both the dressage and hunter/jumper world. Shortly afterwards she was one of the top 25 finalists in Robert Dover s search for the next dressage star. The last five years have been dedicated to working with Vicky Menear on position and training the horses to work tension free through their core. She instructs full time and has students from training level through FEI. Contact her at or cskdressage@gmail.com. JILL MUNRO Jill is a USDF bronze, silver and gold medalist. She has trained with Hilda Gurney, Rolf Henn, and Jessica Ransenhausen. She enjoys working with horses and riders at any level. 6 A NEW POLICY REGARDING PRESCRIPTION MEDICATIONS An accident, which could have had terrible consequences, happened due to a misunderstanding. We have used our dot system for years, and many have put supplements, and sometimes supplements with prescription medications into baggies, or other containers for our men to give at feeding time. Until now, nothing has gone wrong with this. We have cautioned boarders that if it is imperative that the horse get the medication, it s wiser to have staff do it, and many pay us to give the medications. This horses s owner was paying staff to medicate the horse, but a red dot appeared on a horse s stall card. The man who was feeding, gave the horse what was in the container. This horse was getting previcox in gummy candies, and he received a great deal more than one. Staff went to medicate him, and found the empty container. A tragedy was averted, but the horse had to be treated at U. C. Davis. It was several days before we knew he was fine. We used leftover Bubba Fund money to help the owner with the hospital costs. We ve been struggling with how to provide medication, but ensure that such an accident never happens again. After careful consideration, we ve a new policy. A red dot with the feed dots, must only be used for non-prescription feed or supplements, where there is no threat to health if it isn t given, or if more than one is given. Occasionally a horse gets out and eats whatever is kept on stall doors, so this will prevent an accident happening that way, too. All prescription medicine that you want given to your horse, must be done by staff; must be in the container it comes in; and be accompanied by the vet s instructions, which are sometimes on the container. We can make copies of these for us to use. Medicines will be stored in the Medical (Exam) Room. Staff will take the medicine, do whatever preparation may be necessary, and give it to the horse, marking the stall calendar to show it was done. Staff will leave a note on the calendar when/if medication is getting low, so that it can be re-ordered. Medication will never be mixed prior to the time it is to be given and medication will not be stored on the stall front. Feed, carrots, or whatnot to use to give the medication may be stored on the stall front. Our fee for medicating your horse is now $1.00, rather than.50. These changes go into effect on 2/1/15. We realize that s not a lot of notice, but we will work with you to make the transition as seamless as possible. Contact us with any needs, concerns or questions at cowgirlinc@earthlink.net. Thanks for helping us keep horses safe!
